On Thursday night, the broadcast networks were mostly down perhaps thanks in part to a very highly rated Yankees playoff game on cable. CBS remained dominant in the 8pm half hour where The Big Bang Theory was down eight tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo but still was a very strong 4.5 demo. At 8:30pm, week two of How to Be a Gentleman dipped 1.4 million viewers and just two tenths in the demo. While the drop wasn't as severe as some (including myself) thought it would be, CBS has still effectively cancelled the show by trimming its episode order to 9 (shutting down tonight) and moving it to Saturdays. As expected, veteran Rules of Engagement will return to this slot starting October 20, rather than airing on Saturdays. It may not get an official cancellation until next May because of how CBS does business, but it's basically cancelled at this point. At 9pm, Person of Interest was down nine tenths in viewers but just a tenth in the demo. It will be interesting to see if it can go up with a likely improved lead-in. At 10pm, The Mentalist was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo as it was one of only two shows to improve from last week on Thursday night.

ABC has sprung a leak on Thursday nights where their 8pm show is failing and their later dramas are slipping. New show Charlie's Angels fell another 1.2 million viewers and three tenths in the demo to a low 1.2 demo. Last year, My Generation was cancelled in this slot after it slipped to a 1.1. Charlie's has fallen nine tenths in the demo in two weeks and while ABC has seen some positives with it's other new shows, this is a weak link. Don't expect it to make it through November sweeps if it even makes it that long. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy was down a rough 1.5 million viewers and five tenths in the demo. This is very low performance for a show that used to be a Thursday powerhouse. Maybe this should be the final season, just like Desperate Housewives. At 10pm, Private Practice was down a big 1.7 million viewers and seven tenths in the demo from the season premiere last week. ABC has some problems on Thursday.

Over on NBC, there were problems as usual. At 8pm, Community was down six tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. 3.4 million viewers and a 1.5 demo is just completely unacceptable for a third year series. Why does NBC just keep on airing it? At 8:30pm, Parks and Recreation was down just a tenth in viewers and the demo. Considering the lead-in gives it nothing, this is not a horrible performance. At 9pm, The Office was down nine tenths in viewers and three tenths the demo. While still the high point of the night, it's not nearly the show that it was in the ratings. At 9:30pm, week three of Whitney was down half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo. Did it deserve a full season order? Finally at 10pm, Prime Suspect was down seven tenths in viewers but even in the demo, being the only show to not go down in the latter category. Over on FOX, The X-Factor was down five tenths in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. This show is holding up remarkably well.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
