THE WEEK AHEAD: October 28-November 3, 2019

Here's a look at this week on TV!

ABC
ABC is filling the early part of its week with Halloween episodes across both comedy blocks. This has helped the shows in the past but I don't think any big spikes are coming.

MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 The Good Doctor (Repeat)

TUESDAY
8:00 The Conners (Halloween episode)
8:30 Bless This Mess (Halloween episode)
9:00 Mixed-ish (Halloween episode)
9:30 Black-ish (Halloween episode)
10:00 Emergence

WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs (Halloween episode)
8:30 Schooled (Halloween episode)
9:00 Modern Family (Halloween episode)
9:30 Single Parents (Halloween episode)

8:00 Kids Say the Darndest Things
9:00 Shark Tank

CBS
CBS has repeats on Tuesday and Thursday, but the rest of the week is normal programming. They aren't as big on Halloween episodes as ABC.

8:30 Bob Hearts Abishola
9:00 All Rise
10:00 Bull

7:30 60 Minutes
8:30 God Friended Me
9:30 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:30 Madam Secretary

NBC

NBC has Halloween episodes on actual Halloween and it can always be hard for shows that actually fall on the holiday as opposed to a few days before. A big Patriots-Ravens showdown on Sunday Night Football ends the week.

TUESDAY
8:00 The Voice

9:00 Dateline NBC
10:00 Saturday Night Live (Repeat)

SUNDAY
7:00 Football Night in America
8:30 Sunday Night Football: New England at Baltimore

FOX
The fact that the World Series was tied going into Sunday night's game means we will at least get a Game 6. A Game 7 is possible as well but not a guarantee.

9:00 Prodigal Son

8:00 MLB World Series Game 6

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS handed out an early second season renewal to Evil, making it the second show to get one in the early weeks of the season (after Bless the Harts). This seems awfully early for a show that has low ratings but it did uptick in week four and has solid DVR growth. It also comes from creators that CBS wants to be in business with - Robert and Michelle King, so that could be a factor. All that being said, season one will only be 13 episodes so CBS will be looking for a Thursday 10pm replacement for the spring.

- CBS also ordered additional episodes of its four other freshmen: All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola, The Unicorn and Carol's Second Act. It was not official how many episodes of any of them, but the rumor is Bob got the full 22 while the other three got 18.

- FOX announced its midseason schedule. Among the highlights are Last Man Standing returning January 2 in its new time period of Thursdays at 8pm. It will double pump its episodes for the first couple weeks and be followed by new drama Deputy at 9pm. On January 23, new comedy Outmatched will join the night at 8:30pm. Elsewhere, 9-1-1: Lone Star will get a two night premiere starting after the NFC Championship Game on January 19 and taking the original 9-1-1 slot for a winter run. New animated comedy Duncanville will replace Bless the Harts starting February 16 and Lego Masters will be the post-Masked Singer entry for the spring followed Masked's post-Super Bowl return. Finally, two shorter winter runs will be given to Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back as an Empire filler on Tuesdays and the new Flirty Dancing as a Masked Singer filler on Wednesdays in January. No word yet on other new scripted entries Filthy Rich or Next, so it will probably be at least March before we see them. Almost Family will not get a back order but it's not officially cancelled (yet).

- The CW has handed out full season orders to Batwoman and Nancy Drew. Each will get a full 22 episodes. This isn't surprising given the fact that they weren't instant bombs and the CW relies a lot on long term, non-linear data.

QUICK HITS: My CBS Midseason Schedule Suggestion

Here is my midseason schedule suggestion for CBS!

It's been a rough fall for CBS. Their newbies all had rough premieres, but the good news is they've stabilized a little quicker than newbies on other networks. Given that there is not much promising on the bench, I think CBS needs to try to be patient with these new shows and see how they do over the course of a season. It might mean for a major reboot next fall, but I don't think they can make all the moves they need to at midseason so the next best option is to hold steady and see what happens.

MONDAYS
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 (Jan) Bob Hearts Abishola/(Apr) Man with a Plan
9:00 All Rise
10:00 Bull
CBS Mondays aren't working great but they aren't a disaster (that's sort of a theme for CBS this season). Given the extension of episode orders for the newbies and not much on the best, I would leave Mondays alone I guess until towards the end of the season when Man with a Plan can air into summer.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS
9:00 FBI
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans
Tuesdays are working pretty well for CBS. I would leave it alone and yes, that means I would not put the FBI spinoff on the night.

WEDNESDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 Tough as Nails
9:00 Criminal Minds
10:00 Criminal Minds

(mid Feb)
8:00 Survivor
9:00 FBI: Most Wanted
10:00 SEAL Team
I would let the final 10 episode run run of Criminal Minds double pump by making it a January filler back in its original timeslot as well as 10pm. I would put a new reality show before it. In February, I am using the Chicago method when Chicago Fire aired on one night and Chicago PD premiered on a new night instead of following the mothership. I would let it follow the spring run of Survivor and slide SEAL Team back to 10pm where it belongs (if it has to air at all).

THURSDAYS
8:00 Young Sheldon
8:30 The Unicorn
9:00 Mom
9:30 (Jan) Broke/(Mar) Carol's Second Act
10:00 (Jan) Evil/(Feb) S.W.A.T.
I would leave the first 90 minutes of Thursdays alone. I would premiere Broke in January and then bring Carol's Second Act back later in the season. We know Evil only has a 13 episode order so I would replace it by bringing S.W.A.T. back to its old timeslot.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Hawaii Five-0
9:00 Magnum P.I.
10:00 Blue Bloods
I would leave Fridays alone unless Magnum P.I. really tanks and then they always have MacGyver available on the bench.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores
10:00 48 Hours

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 God Friended Me
9:00 Tommy
10:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
I am not sure NCIS: Los Angeles deserves to move to 10pm, but I'm going to put it there anywhere and let Tommy get the 9pm slot. If Tommy bombs, they could always switch slots.

ENDED: Madam Secretary

SAVE FOR SUMMER: The Amazing Race, MacGyver

QUICK HITS: My NBC Midseason Schedule Suggestion

Here are my midseason thoughts for NBC!

NBC has had an interesting fall because a lot of their veterans (especially the Chicago shows) are holding up well, but their new class has arguably been the worst on any network. Sunnyside is cancelled, Bluff City Law has had production shut down after 10 episodes instead of 13 and Perfect Harmony is one of the lowest rated shows on the big four now that Sunnyside is gone.

Once again, I will state this a suggestion, not a prediction!

MONDAYS
8:00 (Jan) America's Got Talent: The Champions/(Mar) The Voice
10:00 (Jan) Council of Dads/(Apr) Manifest
It seems obvious that NBC is going to give Council of Dads the same treatment they had for Rise and The Village: a few weeks airing after This is Us and then taking the 9pm slot. But I think Council of Dads has more potential and that plan clearly doesn't work. If it is their most promising drama (which it very well could be), why not give it a better slot by letting it air after the winter run of America's Got Talent: The Champions. When it finishes its run (or if it doesn't work), Manifest is on the bench and can air into the summer.

TUESDAYS
8:00 (Jan) Ellen's Game of Games/(Mar) The Voice
9:00 (Jan) This is Us/(Apr) Lincoln
10:00 (Jan) Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist/(Mar) New Amsterdam
I also think Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist has potential and would die on Sunday nights. I'd give it a shot airing after This is Us in January and put New Amsterdam on hiatus. When This is Us ends, I would give the slot to Lincoln, which doesn't sound as promising but would still be given a decent enough slot.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Chicago Med
9:00 Chicago Fire
10:00 Chicago PD
Chicago shows on Wednesdays are one of broadcast TV's few shining bright spots. No reason to change a thing.

THURSDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 Superstore
8:30 Perfect Harmony
9:00 The Good Place
9:30 Will & Grace
10:00 Law & Order: SVU

(Feb)
8:00 Superstore
8:30 Brooklyn Nine-Nine
9:00 Will & Grace
9:30 Indebted
10:00 Law & Order: SVU
I heard that Superstore only has 18 episodes this season. I certainly hope it ups it to 22 because it is NBC's only solid comedy. This is going to be a rough night no matter how things shake out so I don't think there's any great option here but putting two compatible single cams followed by two multi-cams seems like the best option in a sea of bad ones. Cutting the comedy block could be an option too but I don't love the idea of NBC only have one comedy hour.

FRIDAYS
8:00 The Blacklist
9:00 Blindspot
10:00 Dateline NBC
I would leave Fridays alone except to add Blindspot to the night at some point. Leaving Blindspot until summer wouldn't be terrible either.

SUNDAYS
(Jan) Various

(Mar)
7:00 Dateline NBC
8:00 Little Big Shots
9:00 The Titan Games
10:00 Good Girls
I think NBC should go with mostly unscripted on Sundays after the many weeks of preemptions in January and February. I don't think anything will work on Sundays at 10pm so sticking with last spring's Good Girls is ok.

SAVE FOR SUMMER: The Kenan Show, Who Do You Think You Are?, World of Dance

CANCEL: Bluff City Law, Sunnyside

QUICK HITS: My FOX Midseason Schedule Suggestion

I will be giving my midseason schedule suggestions over the next couple days. Here is mine for FOX! This is NOT a prediction, but instead a suggestion.

FOX has had a pretty decent fall even with instant bomb Almost Family. Although Prodigal Son has been slipping, it had a decent start and some DVR interest. Bless the Harts has already snagged a second season while WWE SmackDown is doing decently on Fridays. Among returning shows, The Masked Singer is at the top of the ratings and 9-1-1 is arguably the most impressive returning show on any network. The Resident is holding up decently while the animated comedies are having their typical ups and downs with the NFL lead-ins or lack thereof.

MONDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 9-1-1
9:00 9-1-1: Lone Star

(late Mar)
8:00 Next
9:00 Empire
I think FOX should take a cue from the One Chicago night and have a 9-1-1 night rather than spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star being the filler for 9-1-1. When their seasons end, I would launch Next (maybe out of the 9-1-1 season finale?) and let it lead into the final stretch of Empire's final season.

TUESDAYS
8:00 The Resident
9:00 Prodigal Son
These two shows have the full 22 episode seasons, which is pretty rare on FOX. I would put them together on Tuesdays since Prodigal Son is suddenly not cutting it on Mondays. Let's see how they do together and if Prodigal can be a long term player.

WEDNESDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 Lego Masters
9:00 Flirty Dancing

(Feb)
8:00 The Masked Singer
9:00 Filthy Rich
We know The Masked Singer is launching its third edition after the Super Bowl so I would just be filler in for January (these could be Gordon Ramsay shows but why not give new shows a chance). Filthy Rich is slated for Thursdays, but seems like a better option for a post-Masked Singer slot.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Last Man Standing
8:30 Outmatched
9:00 Deputy
The comedy hour is already planned for Thursday nights and that makes sense to me. Instead of Filthy Rich, Deputy seems like a much more compatible companion on the night.

FRIDAYS
8:00 WWE SmackDown
Because we have to.

SUNDAYS
7:00 Animated Encores
8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 The Great North
9:00 Bob's Burgers
9:30 Family Guy
Bless the Harts only has 13 episodes so I think it could end in late December and allow FOX to launch The Great North while they still have a couple weeks of football lead-ins. Other than that, I would leave Sundays alone even though spring will be rough as it always is.

CANCEL: Almost Family

END SEASON: Bless the Harts

SAVE FOR SUMMER: Duncanville, Ultimate Tag

Here's a look at this week on TV!

ABC
ABC is preempting a few of its shows for specials this week including annual Halloween specials It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Toy Story of Terror as well as specials about the Douglas Family and Prince Harry & Meghan Markle. It's hard to imagine the two latter specials doing that much worse than what they are preempting, Emergence and Stumptown.

10:00 The Good Doctor

TUESDAY
8:00 It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Special)

NBC
NBC has cancelled Sunnyside and replaced it with the third and final season of the Will & Grace revivial (more on that below). Elsewhere, there is a marquee Green Bay-Kansas City game on Sunday night that got less appealing with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes unlikely to play.

SUNDAY
7:00 Football Night in America

FOX
FOX has sports all week long except for Monday, which has the regular lineup. The Nationals-Astros World Series should do well, but not as well as it could have if the Yankees were in.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has cancelled Sunnyside after just three episodes. Although it takes a lot to get cancelled early now, Sunnyside just wasn't cutting it with minuscule ratings and very little DVR interest. It will be replaced by Will & Grace, which will come off the bench and have its third and final season premiere of the revival on October 24 at 9:30pm.

- FOX has renewed Bless the Harts for a second season. The animated sitcom has aired just three episodes: two to very low ratings and one to better numbers thanks to football. The early renewal timing was likely due to the production schedule but getting renewed at all is at least a little bit surprising.

- NBC is shutting down production of Bluff City Law after 10 episodes instead of the ordered 13. While this is not officially a cancellation for the Memphis-set drama that has been a huge disappointment on Monday nights, it seems incredibly unlikely it will ever see an 11th episode anywhere.

- NBC will give a winter run to the second season of Making It. The reality show featuring Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman was last season in Summer 2018. It will premiere on Monday, December 2 at 10pm and air four straight nights that week and three nights the next week for its eight episode season.

- The CW has renewed low-rated summer drama Pandora for a second season. It doesn't take much for a summer CW show to get renewed.

- FOX has handed a full season order to Prodigal Son. The new drama, while not setting the world on fire, has been the top performing newbie in the demo across all the networks. It also has some respectable DVR interest so this was not surprising except that FOX has so many dramas on the bench too so I'm surprised it was designed as a shorter season.

- The CW handed three more episodes of All American after a decent season two debut on Monday night. This was a show of faith in the second year drama.

- ABC has renewed summer game show Holy Moley for a second season. Most, if not all, of the other game shows are likely to be renewed as well.

PILOT REVIEW: Nancy Drew

NANCY DREW

Starring: Kennedy McMann, Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Alvina August, with Riley Smith and Scott Wolf

Developed by Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage
Teleplay by Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage, Story by Noga Landau
Directed by Larry Teng

I've only been watching CW shows for this blog for a few years (this is my fourth season reviewing them) and it's amazing how much the "C" shows (from CBS Studios) have a very distinct brand to them. If Nancy Drew was on any other network, it would have a different feel. But on this network, it's so very similar in feel to so many others.

The most obvious connection is Riverdale (it's a shame the CW didn't have this show during Riverdale's one half season two years ago where it really seemed to have some heat). We had a small town setting, gorgeous actors, an Ariana Grande song playing in the background. What else do you need to check all the CW boxes? If I was in a different place in my life, I might have found this one enjoyable. But I'm fully aware that I am nowhere near the target audience for this show and that's okay.

Kennedy McMann is solid in the title role. She has a natural charisma and good dynamics with the rest of the cast. My age means I'm somewhere between thinking it's weird that Scott Wolf is playing the father of a 20-something year old and being OK with it. The friends were a little more forgettable with Maddison Jaizani seemingly playing the Camila Mendes (from Riverdale) role as the mysterious outsider.

This is probably my shortest review of the fall because I just wasn't into it at all. It's like a sci-fi show for me, it's just not my cup of tea so I have trouble keeping interest and then get to the point of writing the review and realizing I barely remember anything about the episode. While I do blame some of that on me not being the target audience, that's not all that's at play. Nancy Drew is a forgettable show. If a pilot is strong enough, it will hold my interest even if it's not for me (I liked a lot about the Riverdale pilot and remember that one more than this one that I just watched). So, I think Nancy Drew is a bad show too. It's not just not for me, it's also not good.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
No. Once was enough for me. It's not a disaster, but it's just not that good.

PILOT REVIEW: Batwoman

BATWOMAN

Starring: Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Elizabeth Anweis and Dougray Scott

Based on Characters Created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger
Developed by Caroline Dries
Written by Caroline Dries, Directed by Marcos Siega

If you've read this blog a long time, you probably know I am not a fan of superhero shows or movies. You may also know that the Batman Universe is the exception to the rule. I have been a fan of Batman-related things since I was young and it has always defied my dislike for the superhero genre. I go see the Batman movies, I even watched more than a full season of Gotham. So, I was more interested in Batwoman than any DC show that's ever been on the CW.

I didn't ultimately stick with Gotham, but one of the things I liked most about it was its noir feel and general moodiness. Batwoman evokes some of those same feelings. The series has received a lot of attention, both positive and negative, for its feminist viewpoint and the fact that the title character is a lesbian. I don't think the show really does too much with that so if you were expecting it to have a major feminist stand, you might be disappointed and if you were anticipating being offended, I don't really see why you would be.

While I'm not a viewer of superhero shows, I know enough tropes to know that a lot are present. Most notably, Kate Kane/Batwoman (Ruby Rose) is the reluctant superhero forced into the line of duty. But Rose does a nice job in the title role and is an intriguing presence on screen. She was more enjoyable as she became more assertive during the episode and I liked her camaraderie with Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson). The antagonist (or is she?), Alice (Rachel Skarsten) was decent, but I felt like she could have been a little bit more maniacal and crazed than she was and than her makeup/style seemed to want her to be.

I thought the best moment of the pilot was when Kate discovered her cousin Bruce was Batman. That was a really great reveal of the Batman suit that made it feel very important. The worst part of the pilot was the meandering plot surrounding The Crows Security. I'm glad the episode didn't do a ton of origin stuff but I would have liked a more interesting first story especially with the connection to Kate's dad, Jacob (Dougray Scott). I just felt like they were chasing down the bad guys a little bit too much and the payoff didn't seem worth it. Maybe that's just how superhero shows are for me.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
I might check it out again but I know that realistically, it's only a matter of time before I drop this show.
