PILOT REVIEW: Abby's

ABBY'S

Starring: Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts, Kimia Behpoornia, and Neil Flynn

IN SHORT: Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Outdoor Edition)

THE PREMISE:
Abby's is a new bar comedy with a unique aspect being that it is filmed outdoors in front of a live audience. It is centered on Abby (Natalie Morales), a woman running a bar in her backyard. But she runs into trouble when she meets her new landlord, Bill (Nelson Franklin), who does not approve of the business and insists on changes that Abby worries will ruin everything. Populating the rest of the cast are bar regulars: loyal customer Fred (Neil Flynn), neighbor and stressed out mom Beth (Jessica Chaffin), know-it-all Rosie (Kimia Behpoornia), and softie bouncer James (Leonard Ouzts).

THE REVIEW:
It's hard to not do the Cheers comparisons here. Abby's has some signs of a potentially strong ensemble comedy but as with most comedies, it's going to take some time and then we can see if it actually has the capability or not to be a winner (if it makes it that long...). One thing I liked about the pilot was they found a decent mechanism to get exposition out of the way by bringing Nelson Franklin's character into an established group of friends. I still think they were maybe a little too overt with the exposition at times, but at least it felt a little less forced than it usually does.

There is some strength in the cast too. Natalie Morales has the right amount of sarcasm and dryness to be in charge of the bar, but the best get for this cast was the always reliable Neil Flynn. Fresh off very memorable and long runs on Scrubs and then The Middle, Flynn is one of those actors that just makes you feel like the show is in good hands. He wasn't as defined yet as the Janitor or Mike Heck, but he still can play the everyday guy pretty darn well. Leonard Ouzts had some funny moments as the bouncer while Nelson Franklin was a serviceable foil to Morales and the rest of the bar. I think this cast at least has the potential to gel and be a strong group if the writing is there.

The outdoor filming thing might be kind of gimmicky, but it does work to a large extent. It has a different feel than an indoor studio would and I think it adds to a surprising amount of authenticity in this show. It seems like the outdoor setting is almost another character here. It's fun to see something different that actually works instead of feeling forced. So, the pieces are there to make Abby's a success. The question is whether or not it can actually put said pieces together.

BOTTOM LINE:
Hey, NBC had some bad ratings (by 1982 standards) at the beginning of the legendary Cheers run so Abby's airing in a tough slot on a night where NBC really struggles doesn't have to be a death knell. But it's still an uphill climb for Cheers 2.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- ABC has renewed The Conners for a second season. The Roseanne spinoff that was born out of necessity following the cancellation of the Roseanne revival and firing of its star had always been certain to be renewed, but it only became official this week when stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson closed their deals. Season two will be 13 episodes, up from season one's 11.

- The CW announced the upcoming 15th season of Supernatural will be the final one for a show that is older than its network. The last remaining throwback to the WB has had a remarkable run that defied expectations all along the way throughout many timeslots on a tiny network that has gone through many incarnations. It will end its run not only as the longest running CW show ever but as one of the longest running drama series in history.

PILOT REVIEW: The Village

THE VILLAGE

Starring: Morian Atias, Dominic Chianese, Warren Christie, Frankie Faison, Jerod Haynes, Daren Kagasoff, Michaela McManus, Lorraine Toussaint, Grace Van Dien

Created by Mike Daniels
Written by Mike Daniels, Directed by Minkie Spiro

IN SHORT: A Million Little Apartments

THE PREMISE:
The Village is another beneficiary of the success of This is Us as it very obviously strives to be a heart-tugging relationship drama. There are moments where it succeeds and moments where it fails, but we'll get to that. This is less about family or friends as it is about a group of people living in a Brooklyn apartment building. This includes Iranian refugee Ava (Morian Atias), nursing home employee Sarah (Michaela McManus) and her pregnant teenage daughter Katie (Grace Van Dien), wounded Army vet Nick (Warren Christie), and longtime couple Patricia and Ron (Lorraine Toussaint and Frankie Faison) among others.

THE REVIEW:
I remember first watching A Million Little Things in the fall and feeling pretty underwhelmed by it. It seemed like a very pale imitation of This is Us while simultaneously checking off every box a relationship drama can have. Yet somehow I found myself watching the entire season of A Million Little Things and still wondering if I even cared by the end. It's a lot harder for me to give up relationship dramas, even so-so ones, than it is crime dramas or medical dramas. I would put The Village at a starting level higher than Million, which probably means I'm going to be watching it for as long or short as it is on the air even if I sit here not sure if I really even liked it.

There are some good performances, to be sure. Lorraine Toussaint and Frankie Faison were enjoyable in parts that didn't seem quite as big as others in the pilot, but are very promising. I was less sold on the relationship between Michaela McManus and Grace Van Dien although they did have some nice moments together. The pilot didn't spend a ton of time building up the relationships between these characters and there's not a natural link like being family or close friends so I wonder how they will intertwine the stories a little more in weeks to come.

It wasn't as transparent as A Million Little Things, but the pilot of The Village still ticked off teen pregnancy, deportation, serious illness, death and paternity questions in the pilot. I don't know why these relationship dramas feel the need to explore so many issues right away. A lot of us are bound to deal with many serious issues in our lifetime, either personally or through a friend or family member, but can you look around at your friends and family and tick off as many boxes as an average group of family members or friends can in a TV pilot? Unlikely. I wish the show would spend more time developing characters without needing life-changing plots. Sometimes, the smaller stories and plots can be just as effective. But here I sit criticizing things when I know I'm going to watch the whole series.

BOTTOM LINE:
The Village is no This is Us, but I think it's off to a better start than A Million Little Things. If you watch one or both of those shows, that should give you an idea going on of what we're working with.

PILOT REVIEW: The Fix

THE FIX

Starring: Robin Tunney, Adam Rayner, Merrin Dungey, Breckin Meyer, Marc Blucas, Mouzam Makkar, Alex Saxon, with Scott Cohen, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Created by Marcia Clark & Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain
Written by Marcia Clark & Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain, Directed by Larysa Kondracki

IN SHORT: American Crime Story: The People v. Sevvy Johnson

THE PREMISE:
This is a show that is quite obviously based on the OJ Simpson trial even before the credits show us that Marcia Clark is a creator/writer on the show. The show starts in 2010 when mega-celebrity Sevvy Johnson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) is acquitted of a double murder with help from his lawyer, Ezra Wolf (Scott Cohen) and much to the surprise and horror of lead prosecutor, Maya Travis (Robin Tunney). Now in the present day, Sevvy's girlfriend has been murdered and he is once again the lead suspect. Maya returns to try to help former colleague, Andre (Adam Rayner), and new prosecutor, CJ (Merrin Dungey), with convicting Sevvy this time around.

THE REVIEW:
If I take a step back and look at The Fix objectively, I can readily admit that it is a flawed show and seems like a passion project for Marcia Clark more than anything. It's almost as if Clark dreamed that OJ would strike again so she'd get another chance and when that never happened, she decided to creat a fictional version of things with an honest to goodness "do-over." If I stand back, I can see the absurdity of that premise not to mention the fact that it is such a contrived plot based on something that everyone knows about with too many parallels to count. But despite that high mindedness from afar, I'll admit I want to know if Sevvy did or not and I hate myself a little bit for that.

There is no performance here that really stands out. As Sevvy Johnson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje seems to be lacking the charisma that made OJ Simpson such a confusing figure. Before OJ was accused of murder, he was pretty well loved and to this day, he's a fascinating personality. But Sevvy was more brooding and less charming and that made it harder to buy that he was a singular celebrity as the show wants him to be portrayed. Speaking of brooding, Robin Tunney didn't do a lot more than brood in the first episode. When I watched the acclaimed American Crime Story, I found myself feeling sorry for Marcia Clark despite all her faults. I didn't feel that yet with Maya Travis.

So despite all my concerns about this show and the lack of compelling performances, I still find myself interested in watching to see what happens. Maybe it's because I kind of wish what Marcia Clark wishes: that somehow a trial that spun out of control resulted in a very obviously guilty man getting off for reasons that had very little to do with the facts of the case. Maybe I wish Clark had a second chance and getting OJ too and so I'm settling for Maya Travis' pursuit of Sevvy Johnson. For whatever reason, I'm hoping things end better for Maya Travis than they did for Marcia Clark.

BOTTOM LINE:
This seems like a show that isn't going to last very long and that is ok because it is hard to imagine what a season two would look for a show like this. Either I'll stick with it for its short-ish run or I'll check back in to at least find out if Sevvy Johnson did it.

THE WEEK AHEAD: March 18-24, 2019

Here's a look at Week #26!

ABC
ABC has a series premiere on Monday night with The Fix, which will follow a two hour Monday edition of American Idol. Idol hasn't really done much this season and I don't think The Fix will be able to do much given that The Crossing opened low last year and Idol is diminished. The rest of the week is new for ABC with the exception of America's Funniest Home Videos on Sunday night.

MONDAY
8:00 American Idol
10:00 The Fix (SERIES PREMIERE)

TUESDAY
8:00 American Housewife
8:30 The Kids Are Alright

9:30 Splitting Up Together
10:00 The Rookie

SUNDAY
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos (Repeat)
8:00 American Idol
10:00 Shark Tank

CBS
CBS has a weird week with repeats peppering the first couple nights and then the NCAA Basketball Tournament taking over the network for most of the rest of the week. Although the NCAA Tournament overall does well, the availability of other games on other networks has diminished the CBS strength.

MONDAY
8:00 The Big Bang Theory (Repeat)

8:00 God Friended Me
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Madam Secretary

NBC
NBC has a series premiere on Tuesday night with The Village, a show that is definitely trying to appeal to the This is Us audience. That didn't work for Rise last year and I'm pretty skeptical The Village will be able to with little buzz. Breaking a 1.0 premiere would frankly surprise me. #OneChicago is off again this week, this time replaced by a special of The Voice and a Michael Buble special.

MONDAY
8:00 The Voice
10:00 The Enemy Within

TUESDAY
8:00 Ellen's Game of Games

SUNDAY
7:00 Ellen's Game of Games (Repeat)
8:00 World of Dance
10:00 Good Girls

FOX
FOX also has a series premiere this week with the reality competition Mental Samurai on Tuesday night. It's not going to be the next The Masked Singer, but it could be an improvement on The Gifted. FOX also has 9-1-1 coming back after last being seen in early December. It was one of FOX's top shows before the hiatus, it will be interesting to see how it returns.

CW
The CW is all new all week for the first time in quite awhile. This includes season finales of Black Lightning, which has been renewed for next season, and All American, which has not.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has renewed The Blacklist for a seventh season. Despite very sleepy ratings in its new Friday timeslot this season, it continues to be a decent delayed viewing player and is starting to be considered somewhat of a legacy show for NBC that was once the biggest new drama to hit the network in years.

- CBS announced its finale dates and notably, the one hour series finale of The Big Bang Theory will air on May 16, an end of an era for CBS.

- ABC has announced two more "retro" game shows to join its stable of shows like Match Game and The $100,000 Pyramid. It will now include revivals of Press Your Luck and Card Sharks, both popular in the 1980s. No word yet on an air date but this summer seems likely.

- NBC has ordered 10 episodes of That's My Jam, a music/dance show inspired by bits on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. There is no host attached yet or time frame for airing.

- ABC announced The Bachelorette will premiere a week earlier than usual this year, starting May 13 at 8pm.

- NBC will premiere two reality shows this summer after America's Got Talent. First up is Songland, premiering May 28 followed by Bring the Funny starting July 9.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has delayed Law & Order: Hate Crimes indefinitely. The show received a series order last fall and was going to be first aired as a backdoor pilot on Law & Order: SVU. But now they will delay it with no planned start. Who knows if it will ever air.

- NBC has renewed Superstore for a fifth season ahead of its return from hiatus this Thursday. The comedy has done a nice job with the difficult task of leading off the NBC comedy lineup. It is well regarded and similarly rated to their own critically acclaimed but small audience sitcoms like The Good Place, Will & Grace, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

- NBC announced premiere dates for two summer series. America's Got Talent will return to its regular Tuesday 8pm home starting May 28 while American Ninja Warrior will return the next day and air on Wednesdays for a couple weeks before settling into its regular Monday timeslot on June 10.

- The CW announced that the upcoming eighth season of Arrow will be the series' last. It will only be 10 episodes and bring the first DC superhero show on the CW to a close. I think this is a good move. The ratings are definitely on the decline and the CW has more than enough DC shows. It's time.

CBS

CBS has a mix of repeats and new episodes as well as an Aretha Franklin special on Sunday night. Can The World's Best sink even lower after going from 1.0 to 0.9 to 0.6 to 0.4 the past four weeks? This has been the biggest flop in years in my opinion given its post-Super Bowl airing.

FOX
In a post-Masked Singer world for FOX, they are airing a two hour season finale of Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back. The show did well as a lead-in to the massive Masked but it will be interesting to see how it does on a night with no pre-tuning.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS announced that season four of Life in Pieces will premiere on Thursday, April 25 and air at 9:30pm. Originally a post-Big Bang show, the series has had full seasons until this year where it clearly became an afterthought. A fifth season seems unlikely given the current treatment but we'll see what happens.

- NBC has renewed the three Chicago shows as well as Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Their #OneChicago night has been a huge success this season and seems likely to return fully intact with all three shows renewed. It will be season 8 for Chicago Fire, season 7 for Chicago PD, and season 5 for Chicago Med. Meanwhile, Brooklyn is in its first NBC season after five seasons on FOX. It started strong but has settled in just a little above what it was getting at the end of the FOX run.

- FOX has announced that Beverly Hills 90210 will be returning in a six episode event series revival this summer. The iconic 90s FOX drama was rebooted in 2008 on the CW and ran for five years, but this will be a revival with many original cast members. Like the reboot though, it will simply go by 90210.
