TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has renewed The Blacklist for Season 8. It is currently on hiatus but will return on March 20. Once a huge breakout hit, it has been relegated to Fridays but has done okay there. Chances are it will return to Fridays next season.

- FOX has renewed summer reality staple So You Think You Can Dance for Season 17. The show has been running forever but only gets minuscule ratings now so any time an ending is announced, it won't surprise me. But that hasn't happened yet.

THE WEEK AHEAD: February 17-23, 2020

Here's a look at this week on TV!

ABC
ABC has an all new week. Friday night has the series finale of Fresh Off the Boat, which is ending after six seasons and 116 episodes. There was a short time where Fresh was arguably my favorite ABC family sitcom, but I felt like it never quite found its voice consistently though it had some great moments. It will be remembered for being TV's first successful sitcom about an Asian American family.

CBS
CBS has a series finale as well this week. Criminal Minds is ending after an incredible 15 seasons and 324 episodes. The procedural drama was never a favorite of critics who chastised it for its glorification of violence, but it was a huge hit with audiences. There was a time where it was one of CBS's top shows and it was a consistently strong performer for much of its run before fading the last couple years. I will readily admit to being a fan of Criminal Minds even though I didn't watch it consistently in the last couple years (though I am watching the final season). I always thought the characters were a cut above the average procedural and there were a lot of cases that were pretty compelling even if, yes, they sometimes were quite creepy and violent.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- ABC has renewed The Good Doctor for a fourth season. The medical drama is not the breakout hit it once was, but it's a solid performer with ABC with strong DVR numbers. This was no surprise.

- NBC has renewed Superstore for a sixth season. The comedy has become an anchor for NBC and is consistently their highest rated comedy (not that that's saying a ton). Superstore joins Brooklyn Nine-Nine as renewals for next year. With The Good Place over and Will & Grace ending and their newbies not doing much, those might be the only returning comedies for NBC.

- NBC announced premiere dates for three unscripted series. A "re-imagined" Little Big Shots with new host Melissa McCarthy will air a preview after the new edition of The Voice on February 24 before settling into its old Sunday 8pm slot. The long delayed third season of The Wall will premiere on March 15 at 7pm while season two of Songland premieres on April 13 at 10pm.

PILOT REVIEW: Duncanville

DUNCANVILLE

Starring: Amy Poehler, Ty Burrell, Riki Lindhome, Zach Cherry, Yassir Lester, Betsy Sodaro

Created by Mike Scully, Julie Thacker Scully & Amy Poehler
Written by Mike Scully, Julie Thacker Scully & Amy Poehler, Directed by Anne Walker Farrell

Duncanville is the newest entry to the FOX animation library. It is centered on an average 15 year old named Duncan (Amy Poehler) who is always on the verge of making bad choices with his friends, much to the chagrin of his family. His mother, Debbie (also voiced by Poehler) is a pretty domineering mother while his dad, Jack (Ty Burrell) tries to be cool but is pretty lame.

I mentioned this in my review of Bless the Harts, but I am not a cartoon fan. There is not a single cartoon that I watch regularly. I think I would have enjoyed this more if it was a live action sitcom. I readily admit that I have some bias against cartoon so take this with a grain of salt. I did enjoy this pilot more than Harts, so that's saying something. The show started pretty weak but the episode got better after the crashing into the tree. That's when I felt like we finally got to see some funny dynamics between the family and a glimpse of what the show could be when the characters are developed more.

That being said, the Duncan character is pretty well developed for a pilot of a cartoon. Amy Poehler brings a lot of good moments and it's impressive that she can do both the son and mother in very different ways. While Duncan had a lot of funny moments, Debbie was played as more of a one trick pony for much of the episode and involved a lot of screeching from Poehler. Similarly, Ty Burrell is great but his Jack plays somewhat similar to Phil Dunphy. I don't know if I would have thought that if I didn't know the voices, but knowing that made the similarities a little more pronounced.

As the episode was coming to a close, I started to think to myself "this isn't so bad, maybe I'll watch another one even though it's a cartoon." Then the very weird Captain Sully moment happened to end the episode and I ended up rolling my eyes and remembering what I don't like about animated sitcoms. There was nothing grounded in reality in that moment and that's what always goes wrong with these cartoons for me. If it's going to be centered on an average 15 year old in an average town, we don't need the fantasy elements.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
I might check in down the road but this won't be a regular appointment for me.

PILOT REVIEW: For Life

FOR LIFE

Starring: Nicholas Pinnock, Indira Varma, Joy Bryant, Mary Stuart Masterson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Tyla Harris, with Glenn Fleshler and Boris McGiver

Created by Hank Steinberg
Written by Hank Steinberg, Directed by George Tillman Jr.

I may have mentioned this before, but last spring was the first time I read some of the pilot scripts. I started with the ABC scripts with plans to read all of them. Not surprisingly, life got busy and I never made it past the ABC ones. But I did read every ABC pilot. The show that became For Life came in #5 for my dramas out of nine and was one of the only three actually picked up by ABC. I do trust my instincts on pilot reads now because this show turned out as middle of the pack as its script indicated it might be.

For Life is centered on an inmate, Aaron Wallace (Nicholas Pinnock), serving a life sentence for a crime he didn't commit. Through a loophole, he managed to get a law degree and is now serving as a lawyer for others while still being behind bars. He also is trying to hold on to the relationship he has left with his ex-wife, Marie (Joy Bryant) and daughter, Jasmine (Tyla Harris) after being away from them for nearly a decade.

The worst part of the pilot was that it was heavy handed at the beginning. I don't know if they were trying to make it a secret that he was actually still incarcerated at the beginning but the "reveal" that he was still an inmate was pretty clear even if I hadn't seen the promos or read the script. They also had an obnoxious "telling not showing" moment where they pretty much explained how Wallace ended up with a law degree in a very unnatural conversation that would never have happened except to explain exposition. But I don't even think that was necessary, I think we could have over time found out how this happened or it could have been accomplished with a line or so.

Where For Life succeeds is winning performances, particularly from Nicholas Pinnock. He is a very likable lead who has some charisma but also some righteous anger. The entire cast was strong even if Pinnock was the only character to get sizable character development in the premiere. I wonder how long this show will be able to play up the "chance to get out of prison" card or will it eventually just become a show with a weekly case? It's a little bit stuck because it seems like it wants to be more than a procedural with some overarching stories but limited places to go. However, just being another legal drama doesn't seem all that appealing either. So, we'll see.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
I was thinking no but I sort of liked the final montage and the previews for future episodes so I think I might give it one more chance.

THE WEEK AHEAD: February 10-16, 2020

Here's a look at this week on TV!

ABC
ABC has a series premiere this week with For Life. ABC has been high on this drama, but is giving it a slot that continues to be a big problem for them. Fresh off Oscar promotion and with a repeat airing after the season premiere of American Idol on Sunday night, they are definitely trying to make it work. It might be a small improvement on recent episodes of Emergence, but not much.

FOX
FOX has a series premiere on Sunday with the animated Duncanville. Taking the slot of Bless the Harts, it has to try to self start without NFL lead-ins every other week or so. The animated comedies always wilt in the spring so that doesn't bode well for Duncanville.

PILOT REVIEW: Katy Keene

KATY KEENE

Starring: Lucy Hale, Ashleigh Murray, Katherine LaNasa, Julia Chan, Jonny Beauchamp, Lucien Laviscount, Zane Holtz, Camille Hyde

Developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi
Based upon the comic book by Archie Comics
Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa & Michael Grassi, Directed by Maggie Kiley

On paper, Katy Keene is a spinoff of Riverdale. It is based on the Archie Comics and in the same universe as CW's broody parent show. But, in practice, this show seems more like it's trying to be The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel set in present time instead of the 1950s. It also probably is a recall to Ugly Betty to those who were fans of that show. It offers a very whimsical and romanticized view of New York City with bright music and brighter colors. The moodiness of Riverdale is nowhere to be found here so it's hard to associate the two shows together.

It is centered on two friends, the title character (Lucy Hale) and Josie McCoy of "Josie and the Pussycats" (Ashleigh Murray). Josie is new to New York and is introduced to Katy's vibrant world including her boyfriend K.O. (Zane Holtz) and roommate Jorge (Jonny Beauchamp). Katy also works for the very difficult fashion designer Gloria Grandbilt - get it? (Katherine LaNasa) at Lacy's Department Store (get it again?)

Lucy Hale is a winning actress in her second go-round on the CW. Although I didn't stick with the short-lived Life Sentence, I really liked her in it. I like her here too. She has a bubbly personality that shines through and this seems to perhaps be a better vehicle for her than Life Sentence. Ashleigh Murray had a few good moments as Josie as well and Jonny Beauchamp is capable of being a scene stealer but played things fairly subtle in the pilot.

While the biggest drama on this show seems to be related to the fashion world, I do have a soft spot for a show like this because I know I can romanticize New York City myself. I've never lived there but visit frequently (perhaps that's why I have a romanticized instead of jaded view). I like that shows can exist that aren't trying to take a cynical tone or have some level of darkness, whether it's obvious or more subversive. It's escapist is the best sense of the word.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
Truthfully a show like this set in the fashion world is not going to become regular viewing for me so I'll probably watch it again but not stick with it. That doesn't mean I'm not rooting for it.

PILOT REVIEW: Tommy

TOMMY

Starring: Edie Falco, Michael Chernus, Adelaide Clemens, Russell G. Jones, Olivia Lucy Phillip, Vladimir Caamano, Joseph Lyle Taylor and Thomas Sadoski

Created by Paul Attanasio
Written by Paul Attanasio, Directed by Kate Dennis

OK, so the first time I tried to watch Tommy, I fell asleep. Unlike some people, this rarely happens to me with TV so that might be an indictment on Tommy but I also think it had to do with me being really tired and it being late. I think that because upon second viewing, I actually found Tommy to be pretty decent.

There are times where Tommy feels like it could be called Blue Bloods: Los Angeles. After all, it is centered on a police chief, this time in LA and with the city's first ever female chief, Abigail Thomas or "Tommy" (Edie Falco). She has her team but also contends with adversaries such as Mayor Buddy Gray (Thomas Sadoski), allies to the former disgraced police chief and a difficult relationship with her daughter, Kate (Olivia Lucy Phillip).

There are elements of Tommy that certainly feel like any other cop show: a leader doesn't go about handling issues in the "traditional way" and instead fearlessly blazes her own trail but - surprise! - she's got some problems in her personal life. It also tries awfully hard to be relevant in 2020 with an immigration plot in the pilot episode. Not that is isn't relevant for Los Angeles or today, but it also seems like a deliberate attempt to be something other than a generic CBS procedural without having to actually say anything new or interesting about the topic.

Where Tommy succeeds though is the cast. It starts with Edie Falco. Of course she made her name on The Sopranos, which I am still making my way through. She was easily the best part of the otherwise troubled Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. And she's certainly the best part of this show. In some ways, it feels a little beneath her. She has the chops to be able to be in a really well-written drama and it could even be with this premise. Though this is not that drama, she can certainly elevate the material. Thomas Sadoski is intriguing too in a role completely different from Life in Pieces. I'd like to see a show with this cast and premise, but on a different network.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
I have heard it gets worse from the premiere but I'm willing to see for myself, so yes.
