SEASON IN REVIEW: 2018-19 Miscellaneous Awards

I am ending the season with my miscellaneous awards from the 2018-19 season and a quick look ahead to next season. This summer will be pretty quiet as usual on the blog, but check back from time to time and of course in the fall!

Past Miscellaneous Awards: 2017-18   2016-17   2015-16   2014-15   2013-14   2012-13   2011-12   2010-11

BEST RETURNING COMEDY
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC) - Brooklyn Nine-Nine seemed to re-find its voice at the end of its final season on FOX but then was unceremoniously cancelled. Getting rescued by NBC a few days later didn't really change Brooklyn's ratings fortune but it did allow the show to creatively keep up the momentum this season starting with a hilarious episode centered on Jake and Amy's honeymoon. The ramping up of Scully and Hitchcock as main characters (with a back story included!) has also been very fun. Brooklyn is firing on all cylinders again!

RUNNER-UP: Superstore (NBC)

BEST RETURNING DRAMA
Chicago PD (NBC)
- I thought about putting the whole #OneChicago trio as the "Best Returning Drama" honoree, but I chose the one that has traditionally been my least favorite of the family. Chicago PD has been far more compelling this year than in past years. It has had some great individual stories and guest stars that have kept the suspense going. And the cast seems to be gelling more than it ever has before (sorry, but I don't miss Sophia Bush on this show who often pulled too much focus). It's getting to the levels of the Fire and Med that come before it. I don't claim these Chicago shows are the best written of all time, but they are consistently enjoyable with good characters.

RUNNER-UP: This is Us (NBC)

THE "REVENGE" AWARD (BIGGEST RETURNING DISAPPOINTMENT)
Murphy Brown (CBS) - I have typically awarded this to a sophomore that comes back and is terrible (like Revenge) but there wasn't one of those on my list of shows so I'm going with one that was returning from longer ago and that was the ill-conceived and ill-fated return of Murphy Brown. Whereas other revivals in recent years have worked to one degree or another even if the ratings falter (Will & Grace) or the star sends out a racist tweet (Roseanne), but Murphy didn't work at all. Trying so hard to be relevant in the Trump era, a show that struggled to stay relevant past the Bush Sr. era felt old and tired. It was a little pathetic and a little sad to watch.

THE "BIGGEST TEASE" AWARD
Manifest (NBC) - Manifest had a really compelling hook and pilot. And even then I was skeptical. Rightfully so because Manifest traveled down the path of so many other shows like it. By a few episodes in, I was already losing interest and I think I gave it up entirely around episode five or six. Why? The usual reasons. It became convoluted and I became convinced that the show didn't have a plan to reach a satisfying conclusion whenever that conclusion came. Add in wooden acting performances and it wasn't worth my time.

THE "BLATANT RIPOFF" AWARD
A Million Little Things (ABC) - We've had several shows try to jump on the This is Us train already and there's more coming (Hello, Council of Dads). I don't mind there being earnest family dramas, but it has to be one that's done organically and not be emotionally manipulative for no reason. Which brings us to A Million Little Things. The drama checked off every issue in the book. Suicide, pregnancy, infidelity, car accidents, cancer, depression, divorce, even 9/11. Everything they could put in to try to make you cry and feel as much as the characters on screen was there. And we ended up with quite a few mopey and unlikable characters. But it seemed to find an audience when it moved to Thursdays so maybe it can be a little less manipulative in season two.

NEW 2018-19 SHOWS I STILL NEED TO WATCH
Fosse/Verdon (FX)
The Romanoffs (Amazon)
Jack Ryan (Amazon)

MOST PROMISING TRAILER FOR 2019-20 BY NETWORK
ABC: Mixed-ish - but I want to see The Baker and the Beauty trailer!
CBS: Evil
NBC: Perfect Harmony - but I want to see Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist trailer!
FOX: Prodigal Son
CW: Batwoman

Happy Summer!

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2018-19 New Dramas

Here is my recap of this year's new dramas! Please note I haven't seen all the new shows I want to as I still need to watch Fosse/Verdon on FX and a couple different streaming shows this summer.

Past New Drama Recaps: 2017-18   2016-17   2015-16   2014-15   2013-14   2012-13   2011-12   2010-11

BEST NEW DRAMA
God Friended Me (CBS) - When I first heard about God Friended Me and read the log line last pilot season, I thought it sounded about as dumb as could be. When I saw the trailer and even when I watched the first episode, I was more intrigued but not sure where it could go. Well it ended up being the feel good drama of the year and was delightfully whimsical yet it had a running mystery that was intriguing too. It reminded me of a lighter version of Person of Interest where the team would get a name and have to piece together a story. Between likable performances and a bright, sunny view of New York City - it was a refreshing drama to watch each week.

RUNNER-UP: New Amsterdam (NBC) - This was a pretty standard medical drama but a strong performance by Ryan Eggold and good characters overall kept me coming back. I often get disinterested in medical dramas (aside from Chicago Med) after a couple episodes. That didn't happen here.

Worth Mentioning: The Village (NBC)/Homecoming (Amazon)

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A NEW DRAMA
Brandon Michael Hall, God Friended Me (CBS) - Everyone seemed to be excited about Brandon Michael Hall in The Mayor last year, thinking he was the next big thing. I didn't see what all the fuss was about with him or the show. But this year, God Friended Me was a much better vehicle for Hall. As Miles Finer, the podcasting atheist who is befriended on social media by God, Hall brought a lot of humor and heart to the role. Whether he was helping his case of the week, interacting with his friends, or blossoming in romance, he was charming and a strong lead to a strong show.

RUNNER-UP: Ryan Eggold, New Amsterdam (NBC) - Ryan Eggold certainly elevated New Amsterdam with a strong performance as the head of the overworked hospital. But I liked him better earlier in the season when he was more take charge and before they got bogged down in the cancer story.

Worth Mentioning: Noah Wyle, The Red Line (CBS)/Scott Foley, Whiskey Cavalier (ABC)

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A NEW DRAMA
Julia Roberts, Homecoming (Amazon) - Homecoming was a show that I was really excited about and one of the few streaming shows I actually watched close to its release. Some of it ended up leaving me cold, but it was still a very interesting show to watch. Elevating it in a big way was Julia Roberts in the lead role. There's something that still feels special about an iconic movie star doing a TV show even in today's day and age. Roberts' confusion as Heidi Bergman helped us feel confused as well, which seemed to be the point. With Roberts not returning for season two, I doubt I will stay with the show.

RUNNER-UP: Michaela McManus, The Village (NBC) - The Village has a sprawling amount of stories and it's hard to follow or care about each one. But Michaela McManus' with her on screen pregnant daughter and long lost lover is probably the most compelling. McManus plays the frazzled mom quite well.

Worth Mentioning: Robin Tunney, The Fix (ABC)/Lauren Cohan, Whiskey Cavalier (ABC)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A NEW DRAMA
Bobby Cannavale, Homecoming (Amazon) - While Julia Roberts was what made me most interested in Homecoming, the other great performance came from Bobby Cannavale. As the fast talking, manipulating Colin Belfast, Cannavale had a pretty interesting run throughout the series where most of what he did was via a cell phone before he became more integrated in the plot towards the end of the season. Even if it didn't totally pay off, I liked the mystery of Cannavale's character and his brashness in the role.

RUNNER-UP: Tyler Labine, New Amsterdam (NBC) - Although playing the same type of role as Oliver Platt on Chicago Med, Tyler Labine brought his typical likability to New Amsterdam as Dr. Iggy Frome. I don't know if the show always gave him the best storylines, but he was solid throughout the season.

Worth Mentioning: Suraj Sharma, God Friended Me (CBS)/Stephan James, Homecoming (Amazon)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A NEW DRAMA
Grace Park, A Million Little Things (ABC) - I did end up watching the whole season of A Million Little Things, but I wasn't thrilled with it even as I was watching it. The show was far too emotionally manipulative and weepy and the performances bordered on obnoxious, which is why you don't see other actors from the show anywhere on this list. But Grace Park was easily the best part of the cast. As stressed mom Katherine Kim, Park was one of the few characters who seemed to actually be a good person and I found myself rooting for her the most.

RUNNER-UP: Violett Beane, God Friended Me (CBS) - As Cara Bloom the journalist, Violett Beane is a great member of the God Friended Me ensemble. She had palpable chemistry with Brandon Michael Hall and was charming in her own story as well with her estranged mother.

Worth Mentioning: Grace Van Dien, The Village (NBC)/Perdita Weeks, Magnum P.I. (CBS)

WORST NEW DRAMA
In the Dark (CW) - While I will try not to rehash my pilot review, this was the show that was the most of a mess in my opinion. It couldn't seem to decide at all what kind of show it wanted to be. Was it a dark comedy? An antihero show? A crime drama? A mystery? It tried to be all of those things in the pilot and didn't succeed at any of them. Color me surprised that it even got on the air at all, much less got a second season even with the CW's very low threshold for renewal.

RUNNER-UP: Legacies (CW) - Another CW show I didn't enjoy, this one wasn't as much of a mess as In the Dark, but it just wasn't for me. I've never been a fan of vampire shows and although the school setting made me hope it might surprise me, I became uninterested about 10 minutes into the pilot.

Worth Mentioning: The Passage (FOX)/Charmed (CW)

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2018-19 New Comedies

For the final three days of the season, I will take a look back at the season with a focus on new comedies today, new dramas tomorrow, and a variety of things on Wednesday. Enjoy!

Past New Comedies posts: 2017-18   2016-17   2015-16   2014-15   2013-14   2012-13   2011-12   2010-11

BEST NEW COMEDY
The Kids Are Alright (ABC) - This is only the second time ever (and first since 2012-13) that my favorite comedy is one that was cancelled. The Kids Are Alright was another one in the ABC sitcom machine, but it had a great voice and spirit about it, especially as the season went on. While I'm not devastated to see it go, I do wish I could have seen more adventures of the Clearys in the future. It was set in the 70s, but not as overtly about the decade as The Goldbergs is about the 80s or Schooled is about the 90s. There were perhaps too many kids in the family for the show to develop all the characters, but the ones they did were pretty funny.

RUNNER-UP: Schooled (ABC) - I was pretty skeptical of the 90s-set spinoff of The Goldbergs because the main characters weren't my favorites on the parents series. But AJ Michalka, Tim Meadows, and Bryan Callen are actually better here and the show is little bit of a love letter to teachers, which I like.

Worth Mentioning: Single Parents (ABC)/The Neighborhood (CBS)

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A NEW COMEDY
Taran Killam, Single Parents (ABC) - Single Parents had its ups and downs in season one, but one of the best parts consistently was Taran Killam as super single dad Will Cooper. In a role that was tailor-made for the SNL alum, Killam shined as a character who is always eager and happy but also showed some depth as the season went along. He developed a great relationship with his on screen daughter, played by Marlow Barkley as well as having some real chemistry with Leighton Meester. The biggest reason Single Parents worked as much as it did was because of Killam.

RUNNER-UP: Cedric the Entertainer, The Neighborhood (CBS) - I thought The Neighborhood would be terrible and it wasn't. It was a standard CBS sitcom, but with better characters and performances. Cedric the Entertainer is pretty restrained in this role and bounces off of Max Greenfield surprisingly well.

Worth Mentioning: Dax Shepard, Bless This Mess (ABC)/Tim Meadows, Schooled (ABC)

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A NEW COMEDY
Mary McCormack, The Kids Are Alright (ABC) - Mary McCormack's Peggy Cleary was the next great ABC sitcom mom in the tradition of Frankie Heck, Beverly Goldberg, Jessica Huang, and Katy Otto among others. Unfortunately, we won't get to see more of Peggy since The Kids Are Alright lasted only a season. But McCormack made the most of her one year with some truly funny deliveries as the exasperated mother of eight boys. Her dead pan delivery and complete disdain for certain actions of her children made her delightfully funny. She was the best part of The Kids Are Alright.

RUNNER-UP: AJ Michalka, Schooled (ABC) - I was never a huge fan of AJ Michalka's Lainey Lewis on The Goldbergs but as her character was fast forwarded to the future in Schooled, I liked her a lot more. She has a funny rapport with the other teachers and the students and gained some depth to her character.

Worth Mentioning: Leighton Meester, Single Parents (ABC)/Lake Bell, Bless This Mess (ABC)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A NEW COMEDY
Brett Dier, Schooled (ABC) - The only "new" character in a four member lead ensemble of Schooled, Brett Dier's CB Brown is a great addition. One of the "saner" members of a zany teaching faculty at William Penn Academy, Dier keeps the show grounded and plays the "nice guy" role well. He plays equally well off of AJ Michalka and their "will they or won't they" dance as he does with the more outrageous Bryan Callen. He truly seems like a young and eager teacher who doesn't know it all yet, but means well.

RUNNER-UP: Neil Flynn, Abby's (NBC) - Neil Flynn has clocked 18 straight seasons on a network sitcom. Though the streak will likely end with Abby's very unlikely to continue, the alum of The Middle and Scrubs brought his consummate professionalism and charm to a show that only got some things right.

Worth Mentioning: Devin Trey Campbell, Single Parents (ABC)/Jack Gore, The Kids Are Alright (ABC)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A NEW COMEDY
Pam Grier, Bless This Mess (ABC) - I haven't been completely into Bless This Mess yet, but there are elements I really like. The strongest character through the first couple episodes is Pam Grier as Constance Terry, the "Andy Taylor" of the small Nebraska town portrayed in the series. With a "take charge" attitude but also a midwestern warmth, she serves the role of the smartest one in a town with newbies (like the two main characters) and oddballs (like the rest of the town). If I keep watching Bless This Mess, one reason will be Pam Grier.

RUNNER-UP: Marlow Barkley, Single Parents (ABC) - As the precocious Sophie Cooper, Marlow Barkley was part of a very strong group of young kids on Single Parents. While being the least of a "type," she was the most natural and funny of the group.

Worth Mentioning: Beth Behrs, The Neighborhood (CBS)/Tichina Arnold, The Neighborhood (CBS)

WORST NEW COMEDY
Rel (FOX) - There were a bunch of stinker sitcoms that came on in the fall this year that either felt tired or wildly unfunny or both. Rel was the worst of the bunch. Despite coming from people with some solid credits, Lil Rel Howery's sitcom tried way too hard. The addition of Sinbad to the cast was a bad idea because he has always overacted and now seems to be doing it even more as he gets older. Buried at the end of the FOX Sunday night lineup, not many people saw it after its initial post-NFL preview. I didn't either. Maybe it got better, but I doubt it.

RUNNER-UP: The Cool Kids (FOX) - The other FOX newbie this fall was almost as bad as Rel and perhaps more disappointing given the cast. With a bunch of sitcom veterans set in a retirement home, the show was dumb and shrill. I also couldn't give this more than an episode before giving up on it.

Worth Mentioning: I Feel Bad (NBC)/Happy Together (CBS)

UPFRONTS 2019: The CW's Official Fall Schedule

Finally, here is the CW schedule!
Check back next week for my recap of the 2018-19 season!

Past CW Upfronts: 2018   2017

MONDAYS
8:00 All American (2nd season)
9:00 Black Lightning (3rd season)
The CW is making a lot of changes and most of their nights at least make thematic sense. But Monday is the outlier. They will lead off with teen/football drama All American and follow it up with the dark DC show Black Lightning. These two don't seem compatible at all. That probably doesn't matter all that much for the CW, but the rest of their lineup does flow together well. All American was a questionable renewal at best and Black Lightning saw a big drop this past season so Monday could be the worst night for them outside of Friday.

TUESDAYS
8:00 The Flash (6th season)
9:00 Arrow (8th season)
Arrow kicked off the CW/DC universe and was followed two years later by its biggest show, The Flash. Despite being the cornerstones of a sprawling group of shows, the two have never aired on the same night. Now they will for Arrow's final, 10 episode season. It seems like a fitting goodbye to Arrow and none of the newbies really seemed like a great fit to follow The Flash anyway. We'll see what comes to the slot at midseason, perhaps Roswell, New Mexico again.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Riverdale (4th season)
9:00 NANCY DREW
Once upon a time, Riverdale was a force to be reckoned with and could have been a great lead-in to a show like a dark spin on the teen sleuth Nancy Drew. But Riverdale is a shell of what it once was in the ratings (and apparently in quality too, I don't watch anymore) so I'm a little surprised that the order isn't switched here. It seems like it would have made much more sense to give Nancy Drew the local lead-in. As the shows stand in this order, I think Riverdale continues to decline and Nancy has a hard time finding its place.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Supernatural (15th season)
9:00 Legacies (2nd season)
The only night that is staying in tact is Thursdays. The veteran drama Supernatural will air its 15th and final season. Predating the CW itself, it has been a remarkable run that at one point seemed like it would never end. But it will and I'm sure the CW will do a lot of promotion leading up to its finale. It is followed by Legacies, which was its lead-out for most of this season. Legacies seemed like a pretty compatible drama so I understand this lack of movement.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Charmed (2nd season)
9:00 Dynasty (3rd season)
Friday is a dumping ground for the CW so it's at least a little surprising that Charmed is already getting pushed off to this night instead of All American or Black Lightning. Charmed has not done great on Sundays by any means, but it seemed like it was a higher priority for the CW and while timeslots means less on this network that any other broadcast one, it is still a timeslot downgrade. Meanwhile, Dynasty has carved out this night as its own and will shift back an hour to 9pm to give Charmed the local lead-in.

SUNDAYS
8:00 BATWOMAN
9:00 Supergirl (5th season)
Sundays are going full on girl power as Batwoman joins Supergirl on the night. Batwoman seems to be the biggest CW priority going into next fall so this seems like a smart move to give it the 8pm slot and pair it with one of the CW's more stable performers. I like the branding of putting Batwoman and Supergirl together. That was my suggestion (but I had it on Mondays). Considering how much buzz Batwoman has already gotten, it could be the strongest CW premiere in awhile, but we'll see.

MIDSEASON: KATY KEENE, The 100, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, In the Dark, Roswell New Mexico
No word on destinations for any of these shows but Katy Keene seems like it will be a Riverdale companion at some point while DC's Legends of Tomorrow may share with Black Lightning again and In the Dark could be Friday bound.

CANCELLED/ENDED: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie, Jane the Virgin

TO SUM UP:
The CW seems to be figuring out what its future will be even as they say all the right things. The reality is that things are getting anemic across the board even for one time hits like The Flash, Supernatural, and Riverdale. Not all that much separates their top show from their bottom show anymore. Now comes the news that they aren't continuing their Netflix deal and the new shows will be shopped individually. I think the CW has some great brand name shows that have clearly had an impact on the culture, but I just wonder how much longer they will be a viable network in their current format. I'm not sure it will be much longer, but a solid Batwoman premiere in the fall would be a good sign for them.

UPFRONTS 2019: CBS's Official Fall Schedule

Here is the CBS schedule!

Past CBS Upfronts: 2018   2017   2016   2015   2014   2013   2012   2011

MONDAYS
8:00 The Neighborhood (2nd season)
8:30 BOB HEARTS ABISHOLA
9:00 ALL RISE
10:00 Bull (4th season)

There are two nights of revamps for CBS on their fall schedule and one of them is Mondays. The Neighborhood was a surprisingly decent performer in the 8pm slot all year long and it will continue there but will now be followed by the new Chuck Lorre sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola, which I guess has a little bit of the culture clash theme of The Neighborhood? It is followed by the new legal drama All Rise. This was a slot that was very tough on Magnum P.I. and The Code this season and we'll have to see if All Rise can offer something those two dramas couldn't. I'm not convinced it can, but it does seem like it will be a better companion to Bull with its comedy-laced trailer. Bull continues at 10pm despite the allegations against star Michael Weatherly that surfaced this season.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS (17th season)
9:00 FBI (2nd season)
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans (6th season)
Many anticipated that the FBI spinoff would land on this night and it might eventually, but it won't be in the fall. CBS is keeping the status quo on Tuesday nights with the original FBI landing in between two of the three NCIS shows. This seems reminiscent of the Chicago franchise on NBC where they rushed a spinoff into development before the mothership really even proved its worth. But then they held it until midseason of the original's second year. Whether it turns out as well for the FBI franchise as it did for the Chicago franchise remains to be seen. For now, this solid lineup (especially in total viewers) will return in tact.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Survivor (39th edition)
9:00 SEAL Team (3rd season)
10:00 S.W.A.T. (3rd season)
Wednesdays are perhaps the most perplexing in the CBS lineup. Of course the venerable Survivor returns at 8pm and it will be celebrating its 40th edition with the spring run. But the next two hours make less sense. SEAL Team returns to 9pm for no real good reason. After airing to underwhelming ratings for a year and a half in this slot, it finally got bumped to 10pm at midseason this year. Even less interest was shown at 10pm so it certainly didn't seem deserving of a timeslot upgrade when it could have just as easily deserved cancellation. A little bit head-scratching although far less egregious is S.W.A.T. moving over a night to Wednesdays. It is not much of a timeslot upgrade, but I don't really understand why they didn't just leave SEAL and S.W.A.T. where they were and put the new Evil at 9pm Wednesdays. Seems like the much more obvious and better move.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Young Sheldon (3rd season)
8:30 THE UNICORN
9:00 Mom (7th season)
9:30 CAROL'S SECOND ACT
10:00 EVIL
CBS is premiering five new shows in the fall and three of them are on a very revamped Thursday night after the departure of The Big Bang Theory. As expected, Young Sheldon assumes the 8pm slot and will be paired with a new single camera comedy, The Unicorn. This is going to be a rough hour for CBS in year to year comparisons and they have to hope that Sheldon can hold its own without Big Bang. I'm not convinced it can and even if it does, The Unicorn doesn't seem like a worthy companion. Mom stays at 9pm and is followed by Patricia Heaton's return to TV in Carol's Second Act. This seems like a more complete comedy hour than 8pm. The new Evil debuts at 10pm. It is being billed as a scary thriller, but the timeslot might be what's most scary. For a show that seemed to be a high priority for CBS, this is a pretty low priority time. It's going to have to find its own audience and that's a tall order for a show like this.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Hawaii Five-0 (10th season)
9:00 Magnum P.I. (2nd season)
10:00 Blue Bloods (10th season)
After three straight years of no changes, CBS's Friday lineup is changing some. Hawaii Five-0 moves to 8pm after a steady run at 9pm. The move is to help Magnum P.I., which struggled on Mondays this past season, but is now on a night where it looks to be a better fit. I'm not convinced renewing Magnum was right in the first place but since they did, they are giving it the best possible chance to succeed. If it doesn't work here relative to expectations, it's not going to work anywhere. It is followed by Blue Bloods in the only slot it has ever know. Quietly chugging along on Friday nights, it has become one of TV's most consistent dramas.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores
10:00 48 Hours (33rd season)

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes (52nd season)
8:00 God Friended Me (2nd season)
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles (11th season)
10:00 Madam Secretary (6th season)
CBS is not making any changes to its Sunday lineup. As is so often the case with CBS (and FOX) Sunday lineups, this looks decent on NFL Sundays with the new God Friended Me often overperforming. But then it looks dire on some non-NFL Sundays with that same freshman show looking just terrible. I guess I'm not shocked that CBS left things alone. Of the new dramas they picked up, none of them would have been great fits here so I understand. NCIS: Los Angeles will return to 9pm after a brief trip to 10pm in late Spring while Madam Secretary will have a 10 episode final season before giving way to something else. And leading it all off is 60 Minutes, entering its 52nd season.

MIDSEASON: BROKE, FBI: MOST WANTED, TOMMY, The Amazing Race, Criminal Minds, MacGyver, Man with a Plan, Undercover Boss
CBS has a pretty typical amount of midseason fare. They have announced a plan to air the final season of Criminal Minds on the only night it has ever known, Wednesdays. I could see them doubling it up for a few weeks and giving both Wednesday dramas a break. FBI: Most Wanted seems destined to land on Tuesdays at some point while Tommy might be a replacement for Madam Secretary. MacGyver might transition to a summer show.

CANCELLED/ENDED: The Big Bang Theory, Fam, Happy Together, Life in Pieces, Million Dollar Mile, Murphy Brown, The Red Line, The World's Best
I couldn't find anything to confirm Million Dollar Mile, The Red Line, or The World's Best, but considering the reality shows weren't even being mentioned as "later decisions" and The Red Line has been re-billed as a limited series, I think they're gone.

FATES TBA: Big Brother: Celebrity Edition, The Code, Ransom

No word yet on these shows but I think The Code will be gone while Big Brother: Celebrity Edition will be back if it can get enough celebs. Ransom could turn up again since it's so cheap to put on.

TO SUM UP:
This is a schedule with some good moves but also some real odd ones. It's not as blatantly bad as ABC, but I wouldn't say it's as strategically sound as NBC or FOX. The return of SEAL Team to Wednesdays at 9pm is a real travesty and says a lot about studio favoritism. The new shows are put in a decent place to succeed except Evil seems to have drawn the short straw in that respect. Leaving Tuesdays and Sundays alone with the small tweak to Fridays all makes sense to me. CBS is traditionally such a conservative network, and this is not the most conservative fall schedule I've ever seen them put out. But they still haven't really solved their biggest problem: it has been years since they had a breakout hit if you don't count Young Sheldon, which hasn't proven it can do it on its own. So it will likely be another year of decent total viewership but low demos for CBS.

UPFRONTS 2019: ABC's Official Fall Schedule

Here is the ABC fall schedule!

Past ABC Upfronts: 2018   2017   2016   2015   2014   2013   2012   2011

MONDAYS
8:00 Dancing with the Stars (28th edition)
10:00 The Good Doctor (3rd season)
Despite many predictions and suggestions to the contrary, ABC is not changing up their format for Monday night. They are not sending Dancing with the Stars to Sunday, they are simply keeping the status quo with the veteran Dancing at 8pm Mondays despite a really rough Fall 2018. The Good Doctor remains at 10pm. This is a show that seems like it really could have taken off if ABC had found the right way to get it to a 9pm slot following its breakout season. But now entering season three, ABC seems content to let it be what it's going to be. It is still one of TV's top 10pm dramas so that counts for something.

TUESDAYS
8:00 The Conners (2nd season)
8:30 Bless This Mess (2nd season)
9:00 MIXED-ISH
9:30 Black-ish (6th season)
10:00 EMERGENCE
ABC had a horrible time with their Tuesday comedy lineup this spring after The Conners ended its season, but they are sticking with two hours of comedy though it is shuffled up quite a bit. The Conners continues at 8pm and plans are for it to have closer to a full season run of episodes next season. Bless This Mess was an afterthought with a mid-April premiere, but it outperformed expectations and gets a timeslot upgrade to 8:30pm behind The Conners. I guess there is some crossover appeal between the two, but it's not a perfect match. 9pm goes to Mixed-ish, the newest spinoff of Black-ish centered on Young Bow in the 1980s. It says something about the mothership and its struggles that its the spinoff getting the 9pm anchor slot to lead into the show it spun off from. Black-ish had a very rough year and will move back half an hour to 9:30pm. 10pm is given to a new drama, the sci-fi thriller Emergence. This show looks like so many other failed ABC sci-fi dramas and it's hard to believe it will find a pulse in a very tough 10pm slot that might be holding down the fort for the yet to be greenlit NYPD Blue reboot.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 The Goldbergs (7th season)
8:30 Schooled (2nd season)
9:00 Modern Family (11th season)
9:30 Single Parents (2nd season)
10:00 STUMPTOWN
ABC continues to go with the comedies into a new drama on Wednesday nights. The drama slot was not kind to A Million Little Things or Whiskey Cavalier this year, but here we go again. This time, it is the Cobie Sulders drama Stumptown, seemingly the only drama pilot ABC actually liked this year. Earlier in the night are the same four comedies as this spring. The Goldbergs and Schooled in the 8pm hour makes sense. What I don't understand is keeping Single Parents after Modern Family. Family is entering its final season. ABC had one more chance to give that lead-in, however diminished it might be, and they chose to give it to a show that showed no signs of growth or enthusiasm this year.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Grey's Anatomy (16th season)
9:00 A Million Little Things (2nd season)
10:00 How to Get Away with Murder (6th season)
Ah, a night with some sense. ABC wisely resisted the urge to go full TGIT and instead will keep A Million Little Things at 9pm after the drama showed some strength when it was moved to Thursdays from Wednesdays in January. This was absolutely the right move and Million may benefit from a full season (or near full season) behind the always reliable Grey's Anatomy. At 10pm is How to Get Away with Murder, which has been delivering diminished results but won't do much damage at 10pm and will eventually give way to another show, most likely Station 19. Although it wasn't announced today, I wouldn't be surprised to get a final season announcement for Murder at some point in the coming months.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Fresh Off the Boat (6th season)
8:30 American Housewife (4th season)
9:00 20/20 (38th season)
ABC is keeping a comedy block on Friday nights with Fresh Off the Boat returning to the 8pm slot despite star Constance Wu's objections to a renewal. Boat started off rough but stabilized pretty quickly and did okay given expectations for a Friday night slot. It will be followed by American Housewife, which has been all over the schedule, and now gets a significant timeslot downgrade. As it enters its fourth year, it will get its fifth timeslot so it has clearly become the bench player for ABC. Black-ish was more deserving of a timeslot downgrade, but it has a spinoff airing now so Housewife draws the short stick. 20/20 regularly beat Dateline NBC this year and will stay at two hours as it has been this spring.

SATURDAYS
8:00 College Football

SUNDAYS
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos (30th season)
8:00 KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS
9:00 Shark Tank (11th season)
10:00 The Rookie (2nd season)
ABC is going unscripted from 7-10pm with the veterans America's Funniest Home Videos and Shark Tank bookending a reboot of Kids Say the Darndest Things, hosted by Tiffany Haddish. The last incarnation aired nearly 20 years ago and was hosted by Bill Cosby, but of course the franchise goes back even further. This is a low priority show that should pair decently with Home Videos, so I don't mind the move. At 10pm is The Rookie, which has a tough task ahead of it after not doing great on Tuesday nights. It seems like it will have a tall order to avoid being two and done with a really tough slot.

MIDSEASON: THE BAKER AND THE BEAUTY, FOR LIFE, UNITED WE FALL, American Idol, The Bachelor, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Station 19
The Baker and the Beauty and For Life seem like potential Tuesday or Wednesday replacements or Baker could also work on Thursdays after A Million Little Things end. I'm sure American Idol and The Bachelor will retain their usual positions. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is likely to be held until Summer 2020. Possible midseason shows not picked up yet include retooled versions of pilots NYPD Blue, Heart of Life, and Nana.

CANCELLED/ENDED: The Alec Baldwin Show, Child Support, Dancing with the Stars Junior, For the People, The Fix, The Kids Are Alright, Speechless, Splitting Up Together, Whiskey Cavalier

FATE TBA: The Great American Baking Show

TO SUM UP:
ABC has notoriously been bad with scheduling no matter who is in charge. Well now it's Karey Burke's turn to show some really bad choices. I get that they didn't like their pilot crop this year, that wasn't even developed under the current regime. But this is a really weak effort by ABC, which used to be one of the most exciting networks at upfronts and always some buzzy new titles. Now here we have a spinoff of a show that struggles mightily in the ratings and two dramas airing in slots that are notorious drama killers. All because ABC is so stubborn and won't move Dancing with the Stars off of Mondays to give its new dramas a chance to succeed. They have Thursdays sewn up and have turned Sundays mostly over to unscripted so they have nowhere to ever put new dramas and that's a huge problem for them. This is so uninspired with so many of their shows showing continued declines. Next spring is going to look rough and ABC may be in need of a major overhaul. NBC's schedule was safe but solid. FOX took some strategic risks. ABC is just keeping the status quo and that doesn't work when you have a network sprouting leaks all over the place.
