EMMY PREVIEW: Final 2024 Emmy Nominations Predictions

As I continue my own awards of what my personal favorites are, here are my official predictions of what will happen at the nominations tomorrow. I looked at each race over the last couple months and projected nominees at that time but these are the official predictions. I predicted 74.83% of nominations correctly last year so I'm trying to top that this year! My Official Predictions: COMEDY CATEGORIES Comedy Series: Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Colin From Accounts, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Gentlemen, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, What We Do in the Shadows     Just Missing: Reservation Dogs Lead Actress in a Comedy: Quinta Brunson ( Abbott Elementary ), Ayo Edebiri ( The Bear ), Selena Gomez ( Only Murders in the Building ), Jean Smart ( Hacks ), Kristen Wiig ( Palm Royale )     Just Missing: Devery Jacobs ( Reservation Dogs ) Lead Actor in a Comedy: Kelsey Grammer ( Frasier ), Theo James ( The Gentlemen ), Steve Martin ( Only Murders in the Building ), Martin...

EMMY PREVIEW: 2023 Emmy Nominations Analysis

The 75th Annual Emmy Nominations have been announced! For a complete list of nominees,  click here . For my predictions, I predicted 74.83% of nominations correctly, my best score since I started predicting in 2020. Here's some of the major storylines from this year's nominations list. HBO DOMINATES IN DRAMA There wasn't much room for dramas that did not air on HBO this year. Succession led all nominations with 27 while The White Lotus (24) and The Last of Us (23) were close behind. Those three shows took up the entirety of Supporting Actor and the Guest categories as well as most of the Supporting Actress category while Succession set an Emmy record with three nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor (Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong & Brian Cox). HBO even got one more Drama Series in the series category with House of the Dragon sneaking in as well. No other Drama series got double digit nominations so expect these three shows to dominate the winners list (let's be real, it...

EMMY PREVIEW: Final 2023 Emmy Nomination Predictions

In the spring, I took a look at each of the major Emmy races. Now, with predictions coming out tomorrow - here are my FINAL Emmy predictions. This is not my personal preference (that's what my daily awards posts this month are for). These are my predictions of what will happen. Check back tomorrow for a quick analysis of the Emmy nominations! My Emmy Preview analysis: Series Races Lead Actor Races Lead Actress Races Supporting Actor Races Supporting Actress Races My Official Predictions: COMEDY CATEGORIES Comedy Series: Abbott Elementary, Barry, The Bear, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Poker Face, Ted Lasso, Wednesday            Just Missing: What We Do in the Shadows Lead Actress in a Comedy: Christina Applegate ( Dead to Me ), Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ), Quinta Brunson ( Abbott Elementary ), Natasha Lyonne ( Poker Face ), Jenna Ortega ( Wednesday )          Just Missing: Elle Fanning (...

EMMY PREVIEW: Series Races

Image
Finishing up my Emmy Preview, I am taking a look at the Outstanding Series races in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. I will also list my most likely nominees in each category as of this moment. Stay tuned in July for my final Emmy nomination predictions. This is the final post for the "season" for my blog but come back each day in July for my fourth annual Benjamonster Awards! COMEDY The competition in comedy is fierce with six of the eight nominees from last year returning. They are led by two time defending champion Ted Lasso , which is looking to win its third straight. The returns on Lasso seem to be diminishing with critics but there was some thought of that last year and then it dominated again. This year feels a little bit different in terms of public response though so while I think a nomination is assured, I don't think it is necessarily the frontrunner unless it pulls a Modern Family and keeps getting Emmys long after the public is ready to move on from the acc...

EMMY PREVIEW: Lead Actor Races

Image
Continuing my Emmy Preview, I am taking a look at the Outstanding Lead Actor races in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. As with all other Emmy posts, I will also list my most likely nominees in each category as of now with the caveat that my final prediction list will come closer to the actual nominations announcement in July. COMEDY Lead Actor in a Comedy Series is interesting because it's one of only two major categories where all of last year's nominees are eligible again (the other is Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series).  Jason Sudeikis is a two time defending champion for Ted Lasso . If this indeed proves to be Lasso 's final season or at least the final season for Sudeikis, he'll be a threat to threepeat, but the backlash to Lasso seems even stronger this year so who knows. Last year, this was seen by many as a two man race between Sudeikis and Bill Hader for Barry . The two of them are locks and it really seems like the Only Murders in the Building duo  Steve Ma...

EMMY PREVIEW: Lead Actress Races

Image
Continuing my Emmy Preview, I am taking a look at the Outstanding Lead Actress races in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. As I did with the Supporting categories last week, I will also list my most likely nominees in each category as of now with the caveat that my final prediction list will come closer to the actual nominations announcement in July. COMEDY This is a competitive category even with two-time defending champion Jean Smart not in the mix this year. With Smart ineligible, the leading contender could be Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary . Brunson already won a Writing award last year and is probably the frontrunner. She's a lock for a nomination but there are many contenders for a win. There is one returning winner, Rachel Brosnahan won in this category in 2018 and will be looking for her fifth and final nomination for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel . It seems like Brosnahan's time to win might have passed, but she has received a lot of acclaim for the show's final ...

EMMY PREVIEW: Supporting Actor Races

Image
Continuing my Emmy Preview, I am taking a look at the Outstanding Supporting Actor races in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. As with yesterday, I will also list my most likely nominees in each category as of now with the caveat that my final prediction list will come closer to the actual nominations announcement in July. COMEDY There's a chance this category could be full of Ted Lasso and Barry actors again with all of last year's nominees eligible again. Leading the pack is the defending two time winner Brett Goldstein , who could easily threepeat as one of Ted Lasso 's most popular characters. He's not the only previous winner likely to get a nomination though with former winners Henry Winkler for Barry and Tony Shalhoub for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel likely to get nominations for their farewell runs. This category had three nominees for Ted Lasso last year and four in 2021 so you have to see past nominees  Nick Mohammed, Toheeb Jimoh, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift al...

EMMY PREVIEW: Supporting Actress Races

Image
This week and next week, I will take a look at each of the main Emmy acting races as well as the Series races. I will also list my most likely nominees in each category. I will caveat that this is still early and these are my projections as of now. A lot can change between now and mid-July when the Emmy nominations are announced. I will post my final predictions the week of the Emmy nominations but here's how I see things right now. Today, I am looking at Outstanding Supporting Actress categories in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. COMEDY Supporting Actress is a crowded field with a lot of potential returning nominees. The field is led by the previous two winners, 2022's Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary and 2021's Hannah Waddingham for Ted Lasso . Both ladies are locked for nominations and could each be a threat to return to the winner's circle with Ralph a more likely repeat. Another former winner is in the mix too. Alex Borstein won for The Marvelous Mrs. Maise...

EMMY PREVIEW: 2022 Emmy Nominations Analysis

The 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced today. I predicted 69.39% correct on Gold Derby, which is down slightly from my 2021 rate (72.22%) and on par with my 2020 predictions (69.87%). Check out the complete list here . Bellow is a look at some of the major storylines from the morning. DOMINATION FOR "SUCCESSION," "TED LASSO" & "THE WHITE LOTUS" These three shows seemed to cement themselves as the frontrunners in their specific categories by leading nominations for their respective fields. Succession led all shows with 25 nominations while Ted Lasso and The White Lotus were each next in line with 20 nominations. Most notable was the overperformance of these three shows in the acting categories. Succession saw its entire main cast nominated except for Alan Ruck and basically seemed to get name checked in the Guest Acting categories with seven nominations across those two categories. Along with star Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso got ...

EMMY PREVIEW: Final Emmy Predictions

In May and June, I took a detailed look at each major Emmy category along with my thoughts at the time of the top contenders in each category. With nominations coming tomorrow, here are my FINAL predictions. This is not how I want it go necessarily, this is how I think it will go. If you want to see more commentary, check out my earlier analysis. This is just a list of predictions. Also, check back tomorrow for some quick thoughts on the nominations! My Emmy Previews analysis:  Series Races ,  Lead Actor Races ,  Lead Actress Races ,  Supporting Actor Races  and  Supporting Actress Races . COMEDY CATEGORIES Series: Abbott Elementary, Barry, Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Reservation Dogs, Ted Lasso, What We Do in the Shadows Just missing: Curb Your Enthusiasm Lead Actor: Anthony Anderson ( Black-ish ), Donald Glover ( Atlanta ), Bill Hader ( Barry ), Steve Martin ( Only Murders in the Building ), Martin Short ( Only Mur...

EMMY PREVIEW: Series Races

Image
I will be ending by Emmy Preview with a look at the Series races! Lots could change between now and nominations day on July 14 but here is how I see things shaking out as of now. COMEDY As I have mentioned, the comedy series categories are incredibly competitive this year. Maybe the most competitive ever with a whopping 14 former nominees eligible in the categories along with several promising newbies. Two former winners are in the mix: last year's winner  Ted Lasso and 2018's winner  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel . Lasso  is definitely a serious threat to repeat as winner. Maisel will probably get nominated again though the fourth season was not received as well as the first three. Two slam dunk nominees are Barry and Hacks . Both could be threats to unseat Lasso as the winner as well. After that, there's a logjam of potential returning nominees. Black-ish has been nominated four times and returned as a nominee last year after two years without getting a nod. It is the final...

EMMY PREVIEW: Lead Actor Races

Image
As I continue my Emmys Preview on Tuesdays, I will be taking a look at the Lead Actor categories today! COMEDY This is a category where it feels like there are co-frontrunners as the 2021 winner - Jason Sudeikis ( Ted Lasso ) faces off against the 2018 & 2019 winner - Bill Hader ( Barry ), who is eligible for the first time since his 2019 win. Both will obviously get nominated. As far as the win goes, I would currently lean a little bit towards Hader with his show being more recent and Barry 's third season being a little more acclaimed than Ted Lasso 's second season. Beyond those two frontrunners, there are lots of others vying for a nomination. Anthony Anderson has been nominated seven times for Black-ish  so it seems likely he'll get one final nomination for the farewell season. The chances seem a little more murky for the rest of the potential returning nominees. Larry David has been nominated six times for Curb Your Enthusiasm  but the most recent season sort of c...

EMMY PREVIEW: Lead Actress Races

Image
As I continue my Emmys Preview on Tuesdays, I will be taking a look at the Lead Actress categories today! COMEDY Another comedy category, another tough fight. This one is interesting because there's likely to only be six nominees that I could see shaking out a lot of different ways. In fact, I only see one person as a slam dunk for a nomination and that is last year's winner, Jean Smart for Hacks . She has continued to win awards through the winter season and the just released second season of Hacks has good reviews as well so she's the one to beat. There's another former winner in the mix too with Rachel Brosnahan returning to contention. She seems unlikely to win as momentum on Maisel seems to be on the downward trajectory. I don't think a nomination is a guarantee for her or any of the rest on this list but I still think it's likely for Brosnahan. Kaley Cuoco was the frontrunner last year until Smart's late season entry and while buzz seems to be down on ...

EMMY PREVIEW: Supporting Actor Races

Image
As I continue my Emmys Preview on Tuesdays, I will be taking a look at the Supporting Actor categories today! COMEDY This is a category that seems like it could be a race between Ted Lasso and Barry supporting actors.  Ted Lasso occupied four slots last year and the hit Apple TV+ show will surely be a player in this year's race. Last year's winner Brett Goldstein is back in the mix and should be considered the frontrunner. There's also Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammad and Jeremy Swift all returning but I'd be surprised if Ted Lasso four-peats in the category again. That's especially true with former nominees and winners back in the mix. 2019 winner Tony Shalhoub for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and 2018 winner Henry Winkler for Barry are both eligible again and  Barry could also see some attention for Anthony Carrigan and perhaps Stephen Root . Other potential returning nominees are Brian Tyree Henry for Atlanta and two longshots to return: Carl Clemons-Hopkins for Hacks an...

EMMY PREVIEW: Supporting Actress Races

Image
For the last five weeks of the current blog season, I will take a look at Emmy races category by category on Tuesdays. Today, I am looking at the Outstanding Supporting Actress races in Comedy, Drama and Limited Series. COMEDY You will probably notice a trend in these posts over the next couple weeks that the comedy categories are stacked across the board. That is certainly true in the Supporting Actress category where Hannah Waddingham ( Ted Lasso ) will try to defend her crown. Her biggest competition is likely her biggest competition from last year: Hannah Einbinder ( Hacks ) . Einbinder has certainly been category frauded as she is absolutely a co-lead with Jean Smart, but there was some love for Hacks last year and there might be even more love this year. Other returning contenders include Waddingham's Ted Lasso co-star Juno Temple , who arguably had a stronger second season than first. Then there's those pesky SNL ladies. I hate that SNL can take up so much of the support...
