BLOG UPDATE!

Hi Everyone,
This fall will mark 10 years since I started this blog. I never imagined I would keep it up this long but I continue to enjoy it so I plan to continue as long as it continues to be fun!

That being said, here are some major updates coming to the blog:

- I have launched a companion site to the blog, the Peak TV Database. This will be a clean and easy way to keep track of all current scripted programming on Broadcast, Cable, Premium and Streaming! Check it out!

- This fall, the blog will be changing formats as I will be shifting away from focusing as much on broadcast networks and more towards TV past and present in general. Features will include capsule reviews of shows I am watching, a revamped Weekend Rewind of old TV schedules, a season by season episode guide of Classic TV shows and analysis of TV news! This was in the works before the industry shutdown but the fact that this won't be a traditional fall for the Broadcast networks makes it the perfect time to switch over. This will be rolled out in September.

- In July, I will be unveiling my own version of the Emmy Awards. The one and only good thing about quarantine is I have been able to catch up on TV a lot quicker than I usually am when I'm more busy. So, check back in July for an extended review of the season, awards-style!

- I will not be posting weekly schedules through the summer as I have but when ABC and NBC unveil their fall plans, I will be posting on that.

Thanks for reading and here's to the next decade!

UPFRONTS: CBS's Fall 2020 Schedule

CBS unveiled its fall schedule today and while it is a very stable schedule, it is risky in the sense that it's not pandemic-proof. Both FOX and the CW largely built their schedule on getting through the fall without having to film new originals aside from a few exceptions but CBS is optimistically planning to get back to shooting in the summer and is almost entirely dependent on shows that will need to film new episodes. They did acknowledge that fall may not mean September, it might mean October or November depending on when shows can go back into production. So here we go!

MONDAYS
8:00 The Neighborhood (3rd season)
8:30 Bob Hearts Abishola (2nd season)
9:00 All Rise (2nd season)
10:00 Bull (5th season)
Monday nights are one of four nights staying the same in a quest for stability. This night worked for the most part. The Neighborhood has quietly become one of the stronger comedies on TV. Bob Hearts Abishola was low coming out of the gate but then stayed quite steady through the season. All Rise was probably the most questionable renewal with pretty low ratings but it will get another chance in the same time period. It seems likely it wouldn't have retained this prime slot in a normal year. Bull continues at 10pm where it has become a fairly reliable performer in that hour.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS (18th season)
9:00 FBI (3rd season)
10:00 FBI: Most Wanted (2nd season)
Tuesday nights are keeping the same schedule as this spring with NCIS, FBI and the recent FBI spinoff, FBI: Most Wanted. One thing being discussed is how safe older actors will be as production resumes and that's definitely a concern for CBS with Mark Harmon (68) on NCIS and Tom Selleck (75) on Friday's Blue Bloods. It was a little bit of an up and down year for FBI: Most Wanted, but it mostly fit well and CBS wants to be in the Dick Wolf franchise business.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Survivor (41st edition)
9:00 The Amazing Race (32nd edition)
10:00 SEAL Team (4th season)
One of the changes in the fall comes on Wednesday nights where CBS is adding the delayed The Amazing Race and saving S.W.A.T. for midseason. The Amazing Race has one full edition in the can so it can air in the fall no matter what. Future filming of Survivor and The Amazing Race will be interesting to monitor as their international locations will make things complicated. CBS is still hoping both can film this summer. I think Survivor is more likely to be able to resume filming sooner. SEAL Team will slide back an hour to 10pm.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Young Sheldon (4th season)

8:30 B POSITIVE
9:00 Mom (8th season)

9:30 The Unicorn (2nd season)
10:00 Evil (2nd season)
Across all five broadcast networks, only one pilot was completed before the industry shutdown in March and that was B Positive. As a result, it gets itself on the fall schedule and can actually release a trailer. It will be surrounded by returning anchors Young Sheldon and Mom. The Unicorn did not do very well at 8:30pm this season but it got a renewal and will slide back an hour to 9:30pm so CBS is going with single cam comedies to bookend the block. Evil returns at 10pm after airing just a 13 episode season last fall. Although the ratings were low, it did get some buzz and awards chatter which is not something most network shows can say.

FRIDAYS
8:00 MacGyver (5th season)

9:00 Magnum P.I. (3rd season)
10:00 Blue Bloods (11th season)
Fridays are staying the same as they were to end the season. With Hawaii Five-0 gone after ending its decade-long run, the trio of MacGyver, Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods will continue. It is a lineup that is old-skewing but still delivers a pretty good total viewer count.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Crimetime Saturday
10:00 48 Hours (34th season)

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes (53rd season)

8:00 THE EQUALIZER
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles (12th season)

10:00 NCIS: New Orleans (7th season)
CBS is only premiering two new series in the fall, one comedy and one drama. The drama is the reboot of The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah and it will inherit the God Friended Me timeslot. Although the pilot did not get completed, the auspices of the title and Latifah helped it get a slot. It will have a chance to succeed assuming football can happen as it will get an indirect NFL lead-in off and on in the fall and seems more appealing to NFL fans than God Friended Me. The two NCIS spinoffs close out the night with NCIS: New Orleans returning at 10pm, where it moved this spring. In the fall of course that will mean the occasional very late start.

MIDSEASON: CLARICE, S.W.A.T., Undercover Boss
As of now CBS only has three shows on the bench for midseason, one being the new sequel to Silence of the Lambs, Clarice - another high profile pilot that did not get completed. They will also have new seasons of S.W.A.T. and Undercover Boss. It is very possible that other new shows could join this list if they can film their pilots at a later date.

CANCELLED/ENDED: Broke, Carol's Second Act, Criminal Minds, God Friended Me, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Tommy

UPFRONTS: The CW's 2020-2021 Schedule

In the weirdest year ever for the TV industry (and everything else), the CW is making plans for the 2020-2021 season. Like FOX, their fall schedule is largely coronavirus-proof with acquisitions and shows that have completed filming. They are planning a full slate of originals to return in January, a few months later than their typical October start. If shows can go back into production in summer or early to mid fall, this is a pretty solid strategy. If things are still shut down close to January, then the TV industry is going to have much bigger problems than the CW's schedule.

So here is both their fall and winter schedule:

MONDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 Whose Line is it Anyway?
8:30 Whose Line is it Anyway?
9:00 Penn & Teller: Fool Us

(Jan)
8:00 All American (3rd season)
9:00 Black Lightning (4th season)
The CW is going with its usual summer Monday lineup through the fall with what will probably be a mix of repeats and leftover originals of Whose Line is it Anyway? and Penn & Teller: Fool Us. The plan for January is to keep the same lineup that started the 2019-20 season with All American and Black Lightning. All American has quietly become one of the CW's stronger shows and is a huge hit in streaming. Black Lightning has struggled since a strong first season.

TUESDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 Swamp Thing (Network Premiere)
9:00 Tell Me a Story (Network Premiere)

(Jan)
8:00 The Flash (7th season)
9:00 SUPERMAN & LOIS
The fall brings two series that were cancelled from streaming services. Swamp Thing aired one season on DC Universe while Tell Me A Story aired two seasons on CBS All Access. It's likely that many people have not seen these shows so it's not a bad attempt by the CW to get some seemingly original programming on. Swamp Thing was pretty critically savaged. I have seen Tell Me A Story and enjoyed it quite a bit but it will certainly have to be edited for time and content. In January, they plan to have the return of The Flash and their newest DC show, Superman & Lois. This has been a marquee title in development for the CW and it's getting the most compatible and strongest lead-in.

WEDNESDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 Two Sentence Horror Stories (2nd season)
8:30 Dead Pixels (US Premiere)
9:00 Coroner (US Premiere)

(Jan)
8:00 Riverdale (5th season)
9:00 Nancy Drew (2nd season)
Wednesdays in the fall have the anthology Two Sentence Horror Stories, which last aired in Summer 2019 and was most likely originally planned for this summer. It is followed by two imports, the comedy Dead Pixels from England and drama Coroner from Canada. January has the same lineup that aired this season with Riverdale and Nancy Drew. Riverdale is a shell of what it was and Nancy Drew was one of the lowest rated non-Friday shows this year so I would not expect much from this lineup.

THURSDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 Supernatural (Remainder of 15th season)
9:00 The Outpost (3rd season)

(Jan)
8:00 WALKER
9:00 Legacies (3rd season)
The one night that is not coronavirus-proof in the fall is Thursdays. Supernatural has seven episodes left in its legendary 15 episode run but not all have been filmed which is why the CW abruptly stopped airing the ones that were done this spring. They will need to film a couple more episodes including the series finale. I'm glad the CW is giving this show, which predates the network itself, the chance to film a proper conclusion. Hopefully they will be able to this summer. It is followed by import The Outpost which had completed five episodes in Serbia when production shut down. In January, the CW is planning to launch its reboot of Walker, Texas Ranger. Now called Walker, the series stars Supernatural star Jared Padalecki who could have a very busy fall if production resumes by having to jump from Supernatural right to Walker. It is followed by the third season of Legacies, which has been a strong performer in delayed viewing.

FRIDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 World's Funniest Animals (Network Premiere)
8:30 TBD

(Jan)
8:00 Penn & Teller: Fool Us
9:00 Whose Line is it Anyway?
9:30 Whose Line is it Anyway?
There's not much of a plan for Fridays in the fall or January with a filler World's Funniest Animals and then nothing scheduled in the fall and the move of the Monday unscripteds in the winter. Not much to see here. I'm surprised they didn't slot Dynasty for January.

SUNDAYS
(Fall)
8:00 TBD

(Jan)
8:00 Batwoman (2nd season)
9:00 Charmed (3rd season)
The CW has no plan as of now for the fall for Sunday nights but will return Batwoman to 8pm in January. It will be followed by Charmed, which first aired on Sundays before moving to Fridays. Supergirl is being held longer in part due to star Melissa Benoist's pregnancy.

MIDSEASON: KUNG FU, THE REPUBLIC OF SARAH, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Dynasty, In the Dark, Roswell New Mexico, Supergirl
If all goes according to plan, the CW midseason will launch sometime in late spring or typically when the season would be ending. It will then go through early summer for a very different type of season (if it happens). Shows being held include two newbies: a reboot of Kung Fu and The Republic of Sarah, which was first developed for CBS and then redeveloped for the CW. Neither show has actually shot a pilot.

CANCELLED/ENDED: The 100, Arrow

TBD: Katy Keene
The CW has not made a determination yet on Katy Keene, with a decision expected in a couple weeks. I do still think it will get renewed but each passing day seems to not help its chances. It has not done well in linear viewing or delayed viewing so the CW will be looking to see how it does in streaming before making a final decision.

UPFRONTS: FOX's 2020 Fall Schedule

This is an Upfront season like no other and, for networks we even get schedules from, a fall schedule like no other. FOX was the first network to attempt to put together a fall schedule that will be mostly coronavirus-proof. So here it is!

MONDAYS
8:00 LA's Finest (Network Premiere)

9:00 NEXT
Since it is unclear when live action scripted series will be able to film again, FOX is piecing together a schedule with some scripted series already in the can. They will bring LA's Finest, which has been airing as a Spectrum original, to broadcast TV. The show was originally developed for NBC and was a high profile pass in Spring 2018 before Spectrum picked it up. Season One will air on FOX in the fall while Season Two premieres on Spectrum next month. NeXt is a sci-fi drama that was picked up last year and this time and had been slated for a summer debut. It's not a great sign when you have to use a show you were going to burn-off in the summer in a prime fall slot, but it had all its episodes completed and that's a rarity.

TUESDAYS
8:00 Cosmos: Possible Worlds (2nd season)
9:00 FILTHY RICH
Tuesday also has a pieced together schedule. Cosmos: Possible Worlds is the follow-up to 2014's Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. It was originally slated to air in March 2019 but got pushed back after sexual harassment allegations against host Neil deGrasse Tyson. The series aired on National Geographic Channel this spring. It is followed by Filthy Rich. Like NeXt, Filthy Rich was part of this year's slate of originals. It was originally targeted for last fall but pushed back due to schedule issues and never got on the air this spring. Now it gets an upgrade (if you want to call it that in this environment) to a fall slot.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 The Masked Singer (4th edition)
9:00 Masterchef Junior (8th edition)
FOX is banking on being able to have a new edition of The Masked Singer even if it can't involve a live audience. It's the only show on the fall schedule that isn't actually filmed yet. They have plans to go back into production in August and hopefully things will be somewhat better by then. It seems hard to imagine them being able to do it remotely the way The Voice and American Idol have. If they can't have The Masked Singer, that will be the biggest blow to the schedule (unless football doesn't happen). It is followed by a new season of Masterchef Junior, originally slated for this summer. I'm a little surprised they didn't try one of the new dramas after Masked, even though that did not work for Almost Family this past fall.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Thursday Night Football
Like all networks carrying the NFL, FOX is certainly hoping a season happens. Between that and Sunday, you can bet FOX will be actively working with the NFL to ensure games (with or without fans) happen.

FRIDAYS
8:00 WWE Smackdown
FOX has done okay with WWE Smackdown on Friday nights though it's been nothing special. I still wonder long term (post pandemic) if they will stick with this.

SATURDAYS
8:00 FOX Sports Saturday

SUNDAYS
7:00 NFL Overrun/The OT/Animated Encores
8:00 The Simpsons (32nd season)
8:30 Bless the Harts (2nd season)
9:00 Bob's Burgers (11th season)
9:30 Family Guy (18th season)
Sundays are dedicated to animated shows, which are all able to continue production and will have no problems airing new episodes throughout next season. In addition to the four airing in the fall - the three mainstays plus year two of Bless the Harts, there are three animated shows waiting on the bench including year two of Duncanville, the delayed The Great North and the new Housebroken. It seems likely that at least one hour of animated shows will air on another night at some point.

MIDSEASON: CALL ME KAT, THE GREAT NORTH, HOUSEBROKEN, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Beat Shazam, Duncanville, Hell's Kitchen
FOX is holding on to some major scripted properties for midseason including 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star with hopes that they'll be able to get them on the air by perhaps January. They also have already ordered Call Me Kat starring Mayim Bialik to series. I would expect them to order more of their in limbo pilots if they can get made.

CANCELLED/ENDED: Almsot Family, Deputy, Empire, Flirty Dancing

FATE TBD: Last Man Standing, Lego Masters, The Moodys, Outmatched, Prodigal Son, The Resident
FOX is leaving a lot of shows' fates undetermined. Lego Masters has been all but officially renewed with reports of them planning for next winter/spring. Last Man Standing, Prodigal Son and The Resident seem likely to return while Outmatched is likely done. The Moodys could potentially air again at the holidays but I wouldn't count on it.

THE WEEK AHEAD: May 11-17, 2020

Here's a look at this week on TV!

In a normal year, this would be a very busy week with Upfronts and new fall schedules. But this is anything but a normal year. It is not clear if we will get any type of schedule from any network this week and even if we do, it's unknown if they'll be able to stick to that schedule. So, if a schedule arrives - I will post it. If not, check back for my season in review later this month!

ABC
ABC has several finales this week. Thursday marks the series finale of How to Get Away with Murder after six seasons. The show was a breakout hit back in the fall of 2014 but has fallen off the map in terms of ratings and buzz over time.

THE WEEK AHEAD: May 4-10, 2020

Here's a look at this week on TV!

ABC
ABC has several season finales this week and also has the second volume of the Disney Family Singalong airing on Mother's Day. The first edition, which aired on a Thursday a couple weeks ago, was a huge hit in the ratings. Can this one do the same? I'm sure it won't be quite as high.

CBS
CBS has a bunch of season finales this week, most of them due to their filming being cut short. Most notable is a remote episode of All Rise that has been developed specifically for the situation we're all in. Given All Rise's status as a bubble show, it could be a series finale.

FOX
FOX also has a mix of new episodes and repeats. They were fortunate that The Masked Singer had wrapped production before the shutdown. I'm not sure how that show could have done remote performances the way The Voice and American Idol have.

CW
The CW is also a mix of new episodes and repeats. Thursday has the season finale of Katy Keene, the only in-season show not yet renewed by the CW (aside from those with planned final seasons). It has terrible ratings but that hasn't stopped the CW from renewing other shows.
