It was an ugly late spring Friday where not a single show topped a 1.0 demo. CBS had the return of Undercover Boss at 8pm to a low 0.8 demo and the dramas completely collapsed after it as both of them went fractional for the first time ever. Hawaii Five-0 was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, but did top the night with a 0.9. Blue Bloods was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo to a rough 0.8. It's previous low was a 1.0. FOX has the season (and perhaps series) finale of Rosewood and it was down a tenth in viewers and the demo. On ABC, The Toy Box was down half a million viewers and even in the demo while a special on Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s was pretty much ignored. On NBC, First Dates was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Dateline NBC was back down nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo from last week's jump. Finally on the CW, The Originals and Reign were both up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

Thursday night was the start of May Sweeps and it was also the NFL Draft. That usually means bad news for The Big Bang Theory on CBS, but that was not the case this year as Big Bang was up a million viewers and a tenth in the demo from its last airing. I thought a series low was a strong possibility so this was a good night for Big Bang. At 8:30pm, The Great Indoors was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. At 9pm, Mom built on its lead-in as it was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Life in Pieces was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. At 10pm, The Amazing Race had a rough night as it was even in viewers but dropped a tenth in the demo to a weak 0.7. On ABC, Grey's Anatomy was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo while Scandal was up a tenth in viewers and the demo. The Catch continued to be ignored and was even with last week. ABC has so many low-rated dramas. I'm sure some of them will get renewed but none of their dramas outside of Grey's, Scandal, and Designated Survivor deserve it.

NBC has cancelled Powerless and shifted the new episode of Superstore to 8:30, behind a repeat. It didn't pay off for them as it was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo to tie a series low. I assume the 8:30 decision was made to avoid The Big Bang Theory and help Chicago Med, but at this point in the season, I probably would have left the new episode at 8pm and aired a repeat at 8:30. At 9pm, Chicago Med was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while The Blacklist was even with last week's 10pm episode. FOX was weirdly hit the hardest, perhaps because of the Draft. At 8pm, Masterchef Junior was down nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for a new series low. At 9pm, the season finale of Kicking & Screaming was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. I really doubt this show will get a second season. Finally on the CW, Supernatural was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Riverdale was even.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Masterchef Junior (FOX)

Wednesday night marked new episodes everywhere as we head into May Sweeps. ABC started things off with The Goldbergs, which was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for its worst performance since May 2014, back in its first season when it aired on Tuesdays. It is one of the few veteran shows that has not hit or tied a series low in the demo this year but it's getting close to that mark (a 1.3). At 8:30pm, Speechless was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for a series low. Modern Family had the week off so ABC went with two episodes of Black-ish. If ABC was trying to see if Black-ish could be an anchor, the results weren't great as the 9pm episode tied a series low. The regular 9:30pm episode actually built on the 9pm episode. At 10pm, Designated Survivor was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo, getting back to the 1.1 demo it was getting for several weeks after its hiatus. On FOX, Shots Fired was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo while Empire was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for a new series low. Even Empire is heading to the 1s in the demo and could hit it before the end of the season.

It seems like the NBC Wednesday lineup is always in repeats, but it was new for the beginning of the stretch run. At 8pm, Blindspot continued to stay in the renewal conversation as it was even with its last airing three weeks ago. The other dramas took a small step back. Law & Order: SVU was up a tenth in viewers but down a tenth in the demo while Chicago PD was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. On CBS, Survivor was up six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Its 1.7 premiere for this edition seemed low, but it has gotten a 1.7 or 1.8 demo every week since. At 9pm, Criminal Minds was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo while Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders ended the night also down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on the CW, Arrow was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while The 100 was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Black-ish (ABC)

PILOT REVIEW: Great News

GREAT NEWS

Starring: Briga Heelan, Andrea Martin, Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, Horatio Sanz, and John Michael Higgins

Created by Tracey Wigfield
Written by Tracey Wigfield, Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller

Great News is a late season entry by NBC from the people who brought us the acclaimed but niche 30 Rock. Taking place in a TV newsroom, it centers on a mother and daughter, Kate and Carol (Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin), who are pretty close until Carol starts working as an intern at the news station where Kate works. Meanwhile, Kate is trying to be more respected by her boss, Greg (Adam Campbell) and the news anchors Chuck and Portia (John Michael Higgins and Nicole Richie). Rounding out the main cast is control room guy Justin (Horatio Sanz).

I never watched much of 30 Rock, but this seems to have the same kind of feel at first glance. The pilot was smart by starting the episode showing a loving relationship between mother and daughter. It allowed for the inevitable conflict when Carol joins the newsroom a bit more enjoyable because they had already established that there is fundamentally a sweet relationship.

Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin have genuine chemistry as mother and daughter and they both give winning performances here. I enjoy seeing Martin in pretty much anything. Another strong performance was surprisingly turned in by Nicole Richie, who is far past her Simple Life days with Paris Hilton. She was well-cast and funny. I found John Michael Higgins to be a funny part, but I thought he was overdoing it a bit. He can be very funny, but he tends to push too hard and unfortunately, this part is ripe for overacting.

Still, I think the groundwork was laid for a funny show. There are strong characters, a good conflict that a lot of stories can be mined from, and a fun setting. All the pieces are there but now the show needs to put it all together, which is often the case with new sitcoms. It needs time to gel and I think it will get there.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
Yep. I'm already watching the second episode!

CANCELLATION ALERT: Powerless

NBC quietly cancelled Powerless this week by pulling the final three episodes from the schedule. The superhero comedy was already pulled at the last minute a couple times for Trial & Error reruns but now there are no immediate plans to air these last three episodes, sealing its fate. Superstore will air repeats at 8pm leading into new episodes at 8:30pm for the next couple weeks.

Tuesday night marked the last scripted series premiere before Upfronts and well it may not have lived up to its title, it wasn't horrible news for NBC. The new comedy Great News was well above recent Trial & Error episodes and even its premiere was only two tenths behind the premiere for Trial (which followed a 3.4 demo for the This is Us season finale). The 9:30pm episode dropped to a 1.0 demo, which equals the opening night demo for episode two of Trial. All in all, it might have put itself in consideration for Upfronts but we'll see how next week goes. At 10pm, Chicago Fire was up six tenths in viewers and even in the demo. CBS had a premiere of its own but the filler 48 Hours: NCIS, which followed repeats, skewed old and was mostly ignored.

On ABC, Imaginary Mary had to follow repeats and it was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. On FOX, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was even in viewers and the demo for a third straight week. At 8:30pm, The Mick had a positive performance, rising two tenths from its lead-in. It was up a tenth in viewers and the demo from its last new episode. Prison Break finally stabilized at 9pm, rising four tenths in viewers and staying even in the demo. Finally on the CW, The Flash was new for the first time in a month and was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while iZombie was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

On Monday night, Gotham was back on FOX after three months off. It returned to tie a series low at a 1.0 demo. I guess it could have been worse for late April but it should have never been off the air. At 9pm, the season (and most certainly series) finale of APB was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. On ABC, Dancing with the Stars gave back last year's Disney-themed spike, dropping eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. At 10pm, Quantico was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. On NBC, The Voice continued to inch down, dropping three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Taken was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Finally, it was a rough night for the CW's return to new programming after a month as both shows hit new series lows. Supergirl was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo while Jane the Virgin was down a tenth in viewers and the demo for its first ever 0.2.

On Monday night, a Disney themed night provided a surge for Dancing with the Stars on ABC. It was up nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for its best performance since this edition's premiere a month ago. But it provided absolutely no help to Quantico, which was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo to a new series low. There are reports that this might get renewed for a third season but that would be so foolish by ABC. On FOX, the season finale of 24: Legacy was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. It's on the bubble for next season and I really could see it going either way. I don't think it deserves to come back, but it might. At 9pm, APB was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

On CBS, Kevin Can Wait was down a tenth in viewers and the demo to tie series lows. Man with a Plan and Superior Donuts were both up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. The season finale of 2 Broke Girls followed and was even with last week. This comedy lineup is nothing if not compatible. For Girls, it could have been the series finale but I tend to think it will get renewed for next year, although possibly held for midseason. At 10pm, Scorpion was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Finally on NBC, The Voice was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Taken was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo.

On Easter night, CBS had a surprisingly healthy performance from a Grammy Salute to the Bee Gees. It skewed old but still got over 10 million viewers, no small feat these days. I think that even surprised CBS. It didn't help Elementary, which was down nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. The other networks were pretty steady. Perhaps they have fallen so low that Easter doesn't cause a dent like it used to. On ABC, Once Upon a Time was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo, Match Game was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, and American Crime was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on NBC, Chicago Justice was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Shades of Blue was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Stayin' Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Bee Gees (CBS)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Elementary (CBS)

On a very soft Friday night, nothing was above a 1.0 demo. That's not too surprising given the spring ratings drops and the fact that it's Easter weekend. On ABC, week two of The Toy Box was down eight tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from its premiere. Shark Tank was down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo while 20/20 was down three tenths in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. On CBS, the season finale of MacGyver was even in viewers but down a tenth in the demo for a series low. It wasn't a great way to go out but it's already been renewed for a second season. At 9pm, Hawaii Five-0 was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Blue Bloods was down four tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

On NBC, First Dates was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. At 9pm, Dateline NBC was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. On FOX, Rosewood was even but week two of You the Jury was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo to a horrible 0.3. I know it's Friday night in April, but will FOX even keep this on the air? Finally on the CW, The Originals was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Reign was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Reports are that The Originals is still very much on the bubble but it deserves to come back considering it's doing as well as iZombie, The 100, and Riverdale in a more difficult situation.

On Thursday night, ABC saw small gains for its veteran dramas and their big episodes. Grey's Anatomy was down a tenth in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. The 100th episode of Scandal followed and was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Yes, it went up but this was a heavily promoted episode and it could only go up a tenth. Scandal's ceiling seems to be getting lower and lower. At 10pm, The Catch was down four tenths in viewers and even in the demo. On CBS, The Big Bang Theory was down 1.1 million viewers and two tenths in the demo for a new series low. The Great Indoors was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Mom was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Life in Pieces was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. At 10pm, The Amazing Race was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo.

On NBC, a special airing of Trial & Error led off the night and definitely hurt its already small chances for a renewal with a series low 0.6 demo. At 8:30pm, Powerless was even. Despite anemic 0.6 demo lead-ins, Chicago Med was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo for a solid 1.1. This show has really been up and down in terms of its performance this spring. At 10pm, the season finale of The Blacklist: Redemption was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Aside from one Voice-fueled night, it got 0.7 or 0.8 demos for its entire run. I doubt it comes back for a second season. On FOX, Masterchef Junior was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo while Kicking & Screaming was down a tenth in viewers and the demo for a new series low. Finally on the CW, Supernatural and Riverdale were both even.

On Wednesday night, only the FOX lineup was completely new with its regular lineup. Shots Fired was down a tenth in viewers and the demo at 8pm but Empire managed to stop the recent bleeding and was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo at 9pm. On CBS, Survivor was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Two episodes of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders followed. The 9pm episode was up slightly from regular Borders episodes but down from usual episodes of the mothership. The 10pm episode was up a tenth in viewers and the demo from last week. Finally on ABC, only Designated Survivor was new and it felt the effects of following repeats as it dropped four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo to a new series low at 0.9. It has been doing well in DVR and came back from its hiatus better than expected, but it has had a tall order. With the drops for Survivor and Shots Fired, the only new dramas this year that have not gone below a 1.0 demo are This is Us, Lethal Weapon, Star, and Bull.

The spring doldrums are definitely here with another bad night for the broadcast networks. FOX had the return of Brooklyn Nine-Nine after over three months off and it did not go well as the veteran comedy hit a new series low with a 0.7 demo. FOX has put a ton of shows on long hiatuses this year and that's always a risk, even for comedies. At 8:30pm, The Mick was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo despite the lower lead-in. At 9pm, week two of Prison Break took a big tumble, falling six tenths in viewers and a rough four tenths in the demo from its premiere. This isn't surprising, but also not a good sign. NBC aired a clip show of The Voice, which did OK, but Trial & Error finally stabilized despite the lead-in drop. It was even in the demo for the 9pm episode and actually up a tenth in the demo at 9:30. It will air a special Thursday episode before the two episode season finale next week.

On ABC, The Middle was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo for a series low. American Housewife also fell to a series low, dropping a tenth in viewers and the demo. At 9pm, Fresh Off the Boat was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. For whatever reason, this show has held up much better in recent weeks than the other comedies. Week two in its regular timeslot meant another drop for Imaginary Mary as it was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. It's basically the same as The Real O'Neals. At 10pm, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on the CW, iZombie followed a repeat of The Flash and was down a tenth in viewers and the demo to new series lows.

Man with a Plan was even, Superior Donuts was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, 2 Broke Girls was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo, and Scorpion was down a tenth in viewers and the demo to a new series low. On Sunday night, CBS had the Masters Golf Championship airing into the evening and it pushed the whole lineup back an hour and preempted Elementary entirely. 60 Minutes was up 2.1 million viewers and half a demo point, benefiting from the Masters lead-in. Both NCIS: Los Angeles and Madam Secretary were down big from their last airings which had a March Madness halo effect boosting their ratings. It was another horrible Sunday for ABC with nothing above a 0.7 demo. America's Funniest Home Videos was hit by the Masters and down from last week's repeat. At 8pm, Once Upon a Time was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo to a new series low. At this point, I think we would know if it was getting cancelled but you never know with ABC especially after their treatment of Nashville and Castle last year. At 9pm, Match Game was up half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo while American Crime ended the night down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on NBC, Little Big Shots was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo, Chicago Justice was down four tenths in viewers and up a tenth in the demo, and Shades of Blue was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

Friday night brought three unscripted premieres. There weren't really any winners but there was definitely a clear loser and that was on FOX. On ABC, the Eric Stonestreet hosted The Toy Box premiered to 4.1 million viewers and a 0.8 demo. This was just a bit below recent numbers for the comedies in the hour. At 9pm, Shark Tank was new for the first time since February 24 and down a million viewers and two tenths in the demo, but that was a high showing back in February so this isn't bad especially with so many weeks off. At 10pm, 20/20 was up half a million viewers and even in the demo. CBS had their three dramas tie series lows in the demo. MacGyver was even, Hawaii Five-0 was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo, and Blue Bloods was up two tenths in viewers and down a tenth in the demo.

On NBC, First Dates premiered to 3.8 million viewers and a 0.8 demo, which was almost exactly even with The Toy Box. I'd say this was more of an over-performance because The Toy Box is part of a better lineup and got more promotion. At 9pm, Dateline NBC was down seven tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. On FOX, Rosewood was even to start the night. While The Toy Box and First Dates had passable performances, FOX's You the Jury was completely ignored with 1.5 million viewers and a 0.4 demo. It'll probably get to keep airing here and it's not too much lower than Sleepy Hollow, but it's still a bad performance. Finally on the CW, The Originals was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Reign was even.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: The Originals (CW)

On Thursday night, TGIT followed up its good week with a really bad showing and new series lows for veterans Grey's Anatomy and Scandal. Grey's was down four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo while Scandal was down a rough 1.5 million viewers and three tenths in the demo. For Grey's, it was a new series low by two tenths. For Scandal, it was an ugly 1.2 demo a week before its 100th episode. At 10pm, The Catch was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. CBS had a pretty solid week with every show even or up. At 8pm, The Big Bang Theory was down two tenths in viewers but up a tenth in the demo from last week's series low. At 8:30pm, The Great Indoors was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Perhaps the best night was had by Mom, which was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo. At 9:30pm, Life in Pieces was up a tenth in viewers and the demo. At 10pm, week two of The Amazing Race was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

On NBC, Superstore crashed to tie a new series low as it was down 1.1 million viewers and a rough three tenths in the demo for a new series low. The last time it hit a 0.8 demo was a one-off airing over the Christmas/New Years week in December 2015. At 8:30pm, Powerless was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Chicago Med followed and was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo from last week's series low. At 10pm, The Blacklist: Redemption was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. On FOX, Masterchef Junior was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, tying a series low set in November 2015, while Kicking & Screaming was up three tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on the CW, Supernatural and Riverdale were both down a tenth in viewers and the demo to tie series lows in the latter categories.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Mom (CBS)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Superstore (NBC)

RENEWAL ALERT: Criminal Minds

CBS announced today that it has renewed Criminal Minds for a 13th season, joining a huge list of renewals made a couple weeks ago. It has come down to the wire with tough negotiations before but the long running drama will be back despite series lows hit this year and some major cast upheavals including the departures of original cast members Shemar Moore (his choice) and Thomas Gibson (the show's choice).

Minds has always aired in the Wednesday 9pm slot but it seems like it could finally move to a 10pm slot next year with its slipping numbers. Still on the bubble for CBS is 2 Broke Girls, The Amazing Race, Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Elementary, The Great Indoors, Hunted, and Undercover Boss. At least some of those will get renewed. It doesn't look good for The Odd Couple, Pure Genius, Ransom, and Training Day while Doubt has already been cancelled.

QUICK HITS: The Most Promising Pilots

Here is my look at the comedy and drama pilots I'm most interested in for next season!
For a complete list, click here

DRAMAS

Rise (NBC) - Easily the show I am most looking forward to next season. Set around a high school theater program and from the person who gave us Friday Night Lights and Parenthood? Count me all in on this one. It's hard to envision a scenario other than this being paired with This is Us on the fall schedule.

Deception (ABC) - I'm very interested in a magic procedural perhaps because of how much I enjoy the Now You See Me movies. This seems like a great fit for ABC and a lighthearted procedural in the Castle vein.

The Gospel of Kevin (ABC) - I like Jason Ritter in anything I've seen him in and he deserves a success. I think this concept sounds promising and I trust Ritter to make it strong.

Searchers (CW) - This is the only CW pilot that looks promising to me but I like the idea of a globe-setting adventure story uncovering the world's secrets based on clues. Sounds a little like National Treasure, which is a guilty pleasure for me.

Untitled University Drama (FOX) - This sounds a little bit like season two of American Crime, but it has a great cast. It could either be a well-written prestigious drama or one that tries to be. I hope its the former.

Untitled Jenny Lumet (CBS) - It's a CBS procedural so I'm skeptical but the idea of a team investigating hate crimes seems like it could be something slightly different and a show with something important to say.

Black's Law (ABC) - This sounds interesting to me and I trust Shondaland because I like most of her shows at least at first. I'm sure I might tire of it eventually but she has earned the right for me to be optimistic.

Others that sound interesting: Good Girls (NBC), Untitled Marc Cherry (ABC), The Get (CBS), Doomsday (ABC)

COMEDIES

Libby & Malcolm (ABC) - This sounds very entertaining and it has been such a hot title through development, it must be very good. Couple that with Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance in the lead roles and the Black-ish creator behind the camera, this has quality written all over it.

Household Name (ABC) - Carol Burnett is possibly coming back to TV! This sounds like a quirky and funny comedy and I think Burnett still has the chops even in her 80s. I'm hopeful about this one.

Me, Myself, and I (CBS) - Bobby Moynihan has signed on to this show which makes an interesting concept even more appealing to me. It sounds a bit like a comedic This is Us, showcasing a man's life at 14 in 1991, at 40 in 2017, and at 65 in 2042.

Ghosted (FOX) - This sounds just crazy enough to work and it sounds like it could be a perfect fit with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. With single cam alums Craig Robinson and Adam Scott in the lead, I have hope this will be pretty funny.

9J, 9K, & 9L (CBS) - This sounds like a new Everybody Loves Raymond and it has a great cast including David Walton, Linda Lavin, and Elliot Gould among others.

Linda from HR (FOX) - Lauren Graham is enough to get me interested in this one and the premise sounds like a great part for the always frazzled Graham.

Others that sound interesting: Untitled City Mayor Project (ABC), Charlie Foxtrot (CBS), Untitled Goldbergs Spinoff (ABC)
