TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- The CW has announced some of its midseason plans. New series Roswell, New Mexico will premiere on Tuesday, January 15 at 9pm. This new series will bump Black Lightning to Mondays at 9pm where it will take the place of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, which will go on hiatus. Meanwhile, although dates have not been set, Jane the Virgin will air its final season on Wednesdays at 9pm after All American has ended its first season while Legacies will give way to the new In the Dark on Thursdays at 9pm around the same time. No information yet on iZombie or The 100 but at least one of them will be heading to Fridays I'm sure.

- CBS has ordered a reality show called Million Dollar Mile produced by LeBron James and hosted by Tim Tebow. No word yet on when it will air, but it sounds like it could be a summer show.

- Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for a seventh season even before its sixth season premieres. The low rated drama clearly got a vote in its favor from parent company Disney. Season 6 is likely to premiere in late spring or early summer.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- ABC has handed a full season order to The Rookie. The Tuesday cop drama has done okay in its difficult slot. It has basically performed similarly to other ABC 10pm dramas A Million Little Things and How to Get Away with Murder.

- ABC also handed full season orders to Tuesday comedies The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. It will be a full 22 episode season for Kids, but 18 episodes for Splitting. Still, this is a vote of confidence for the Tuesday lineup as a whole and ABC didn't have much comedy on the bench. It seems likely that Schooled will replace The Conners as everything else has a full season now on Tuesday and Wednesday.

- NBC announced plans for Thursdays at midseason. FOX transplant Brooklyn Nine-Nine will premiere on January 10 and take over the Thursdays 9PM timeslot following The Titan Games, which will now air on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays (presumably to keep #OneChicago in tact all season). The Good Place will follow at 9:30pm for three weeks and then Will & Grace will take over the 9:30pm slot starting January 31. Superstore will go on hiatus and return in March (not confirmed but likely with the new Abby's). Meanwhile, freshman comedy I Feel Bad will not get a back order. It's not officially cancelled, but that's obviously pretty close to a final nail in the coffin.

- Continuing NBC midseason plans, The Blacklist will have its season premiere on Friday, January 4 at 8pm with a two hour episode. It will settle into its 9pm timeslot the next week.

- ABC has yanked The Alec Baldwin Show off of Sunday nights and will burn off episodes on Saturdays starting in December. This is essentially the first cancellation of the season and Baldwin's recent arrest didn't help matters. Repeats of Shark Tank will take over the 10pm slot.

- The CW handed extended episode orders to all three freshmen dramas. Charmed will get a full season of 22 episodes while All American and Legacies have gained three additional episodes each. All three dramas have had positive and negative ratings moments.

- In an unsurprising move, NBC announced the cancellation of the low-rated summer drama Reverie.

QUICK HITS: Midseason Schedule Suggestion for ABC

Here is my midseason schedule suggestion for ABC!

ABC has had an OK fall. They have a bunch of middling dramas while their comedies have done a little bit better. Their only outright flop is The Alec Baldwin Show, which is already benched to Saturdays. ABC has three more high profile dramas sitting on the bench. I think given the structure of their schedule and the fact that American Idol is coming back, this is a schedule that doesn't have a ton of room for creativity.

MONDAYS
(January)
8:00 The Bachelor
10:00 The Good Doctor

(March)
8:00 American Idol
10:00 Whiskey Cavalier
I think the plan for last year is solid with The Bachelor pairing with The Good Doctor and American Idol leading into a new show. I just don't think The Good Doctor could survive a hiatus, but I would try to get a new drama on a little sooner than early April like The Crossing was last year. Whiskey Cavalier seems like a good fit here.

TUESDAYS
8:00 (Jan) The Conners/(Feb) Schooled
8:30 The Kids Are Alright
9:00 Black-ish
9:30 Splitting Up Together
10:00 The Rookie
All the Tuesday shows have full or near full seasons except for The Conners, which only negotiated 11 episodes. So I would replace it with The Goldbergs spinoff Schooled, which should get a post-Goldbergs sneak peek. If they can manage to get the Sue spinoff of The Middle by this spring, that could change things on this night. But with The Kids Are Alright doing pretty well and The Rookie not completely collapsing in a difficult timeslot, I think it's smart to give this lineup a chance to stay together.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 The Goldbergs
8:30 American Housewife
9:00 Modern Family
9:30 Single Parents
10:00 (Jan) A Million Little Things/(Apr) The Fix
I would leave Wednesdays alone for most of the season. The comedy block is doing decently and A Million Little Things has been a big DVR gainer. When it ends its season, it can give way to The Fix, which seems to have the lowest ceiling of the new dramas so I would give it the latest start date.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Grey's Anatomy
9:00 Station 19
10:00 (Jan) How to Get Away with Murder/(Mar) For the People
Thursdays can stay TGIT. I think the radical solution is a new drama at 9pm Thursday, but I definitely don't think they'll do it and I'm not even convinced that's the right call. So I guess I would stick with Station 19 this season and let How to Get Away with Murder give way to For the People. ABC needs to overhaul their schedule to allow for better spots for drama launches, but I don't think a midseason change is the way to accomplish that.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Family Food Fight
9:00 Fresh Off the Boat
9:30 Speechless
10:00 20/20
The return of TGIT has not worked out for ABC, but they have full seasons of Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless. So I would try a reality show at 8pm - maybe the new Family Food Fight - and try the comedies at 9pm before calling it a loss.

SUNDAYS
(January)
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 Celebrity Family Feud
9:00 Shark Tank
10:00 Shark Tank

(late February)
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 American Idol
10:00 Grand Hotel
I think ABC will and should bide their time on Sundays until American Idol returns. When it does, I would pair it with Grand Hotel, which seems like their highest profile new show.

CANCEL: The Alec Baldwin Show

ENDED: Child Support, Dancing with the Stars, Dancing with the Stars Junior

SUMMER: The $100,000 Pyramid, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., To Tell the Truth

THE WEEK AHEAD: November 5-11, 2018

Here's a look at Week #7!

ABC
ABC is one of three networks taking Tuesday off for midterm election coverage. It's understandable because there will be a lot of attention on the midterms, but it comes at an unfortunate time for ABC which saw a nice uptick for its comedy block last week and now can't have a chance to build on that momentum. The rest of the week is normal except for Sunday, which will see Shark Tank and The Alec Baldwin Show preempted again, this time for Robin Roberts specials.

MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 The Good Doctor

TUESDAY
8:00 ABC News: Midterm Election Coverage

9:00 Robin Roberts ABC News Special (Special)
10:00 Country Music's Biggest Stars: In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts (Special)

CBS
CBS is also preempting Tuesday night for midterm election coverage. The rest of the week is the normal lineup so nothing too exciting!

NBC
NBC rounds out the big three networks preempting Tuesday night for election coverage. NBC News usually does the best of the big three, but they will miss their potent Tuesday lineup. The rest of the week for them is normal as well.

MONDAY
8:00 The Voice

FOX
FOX is leaving its election coverage to its cable news counterpart and will instead run its regular, low-rated lineup of The Gifted and The Resident. FOX has its normal lineup all week including a much better Thursday Night Football matchup than last week's terrible showdown between two one-win teams.

MONDAY
8:00 The Resident

QUICK HITS: Midseason Schedule Suggestion for CBS

Here is my CBS midseason schedule suggestion!

CBS seemed off to a rough start, but they have stabilized quicker than other networks and have reliable newbies in FBI and (surprisingly) The Neighborhood even while their bigger bets like Magnum P.I. and Murphy Brown haven't done as well.

MONDAYS
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 (Jan) Fam/(Apr) Man with a Plan
9:00 Magnum P.I.
10:00 Bull
Happy Together is doing OK, but they have three comedies on the bench. With The Neighborhood being a decent performer, I would use it to launch a new show at a highly viewed time of year so I would slot Fam behind it in January and then let Man with a Plan do mop-up at the end of the season. Magnum P.I. has a full season so I guess I would leave it here unless things get dire then I would switch it with Bull.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS
9:00 FBI
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans
I would leave Tuesdays alone. They have been solid for CBS and FBI is doing decently, especially in total viewers.

WEDNESDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 The Amazing Race
9:00 SEAL Team
10:00 Criminal Minds

(late Feb)
8:00 Survivor
9:00 The Code
10:00 SEAL Team
Criminal Minds has a shorter order and with good reason because it is doing terrible. I think it's time to call it a day for the long running drama and let it sign off this winter. I would have The Amazing Race sub for Survivor again after last year's decent midseason run. When Survivor comes back, I would slide SEAL Team to 10pm and launch The Code at 9pm.

THURSDAYS
8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 Young Sheldon
9:00 Mom
9:30 (Jan) Murphy Brown/(Feb) Life in Pieces
10:00 (Jan) S.W.A.T./(Feb) NCIS: Los Angeles
I would mostly leave Thursdays alone except I don't think they should extend the Murphy Brown episode order because Life in Pieces would probably do the same or better. I would put S.W.A.T. on hiatus and move NCIS: Los Angeles to this night to stabilize 10pm and because I have a different plan for Sunday (see below).

FRIDAYS
8:00 (Jan) MacGyver/(Apr) God Friended Me
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods
Since I have a different plan for Sundays, I would move God Friended Me to Fridays after MacGyver ends its season in April as it has the past couple years. Let's find out if God Friended Me is anything more than a timeslot success now. I would leave Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods alone.

SUNDAYS

(Jan)
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 God Friended Me
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Madam Secretary

(Feb)
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 The World's Best
9:00 The Red Line
10:00 Madam Secretary
I think Sundays are the night to make a swing. With The World's Best getting the post-Super Bowl slot, CBS should do what they did with Undercover Boss in 2010 and give it a prime Sunday slot. They could use it to launch The Red Line as well. It's a chance to really make a dent on Sundays in the spring knowing they have the Super Bowl as a launching tool.

TWO WEEK RUN: Big Brother Celebrity Edition

SUMMER: Elementary, Instinct

CANCEL: Happy Together
