UPFRONTS 2014: What CBS Will Do

My final schedule prediction is CBS. Last week, I gave my CBS suggestion. Now time for the prediction! Check back often this weekend and next week for pickups, renewals, cancellations, and commentary on the new fall schedule!

Past Years: 2013   2012   2011

MONDAYS
8:00 2 Broke Girls
8:30 HOW I MET YOUR DAD
9:00 (Sep) The Big Bang Theory/(Nov) Mike & Molly

9:30 Mom
10:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
We know that CBS is likely to air The Big Bang Theory on Mondays to give that night a boost while they wait for Thursdays to be free after football. Many think that means 8pm on Mondays but I think they'll go 9pm to give Mom a boost while possibly giving the night a halo effect. Despite my reservations, How I Met Your Dad seems headed to the schedule but I think CBS will not want to necessarily give it the old How I Met Your Mother timeslot. I could see them airing Big Bang at 8pm and 9pm the first week to give Dad a big launch. 2 Broke Girls has held up OK at 8pm this spring after Mother ended. When Big Bang goes back to Thursdays, I think they will premiere Mike & Molly late like they did this past year. It's time for an established drama to go to 10pm and it looks like it'll be NCIS: Los Angeles or Person of Interest. My bet is Los Angeles.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS
9:00 NCIS: NEW ORLEANS

10:00 Person of Interest
I think CBS will launch the new NCIS: New Orleans and it will air after the mothership. It makes the most sense if CBS is going to try to expand the NCIS world. I think they'll be hesitant to move Person of Interest two years in a row so that will stay at 10pm.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Survivor
9:00 Criminal Minds
10:00 CSI: CYBER
Wow, I am being very conservative with my CBS picks but I think they will pick up CSI: Cyber as well and give it CSI's current timeslot, hoping that they can fend off Chicago PD.

THURSDAYS(Sep)
8:00 Thursday Night Football

(Nov)
8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 THE ODD COUPLE
9:00 Two and a Half Men
9:30 The Millers
10:00 Elementary
We know football is going to be on Thursdays for the first two months. I think because of that, they'll be pretty safe when the regular lineup returns in November. I don't see them giving The Millers another chance at 8:30pm so I think they'll use the slot for Matthew Perry's The Odd Couple with The Millers sliding back an hour.

FRIDAYS
8:00 Undercover Boss
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods
Fridays worked pretty well this year, I don't see CBS changing it as it took awhile to stabilize this night.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores
10:00 48 Hours

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 The Amazing Race
9:00 The Good Wife
10:00 CSI
I wasn't sure about this night. I could see them moving The Good Wife to 10pm. I could also see them launching the new Madam Secretary here but they've been very hesitant to put a new show on Sundays because of football. Therefore, I think it's time for a new veteran drama to come to this night with The Mentalist most likely cancelled. I don't see any other option except CSI.

MIDSEASON: BATTLE CREEK, MADAM SECRETARY, THE MCCARTHYS, UNTITLED KEVIN WILLIAMSON
It's weird to not predict any holdover shows for midseason though I guess The Mentalist or Friends with Better Lives stand a chance. But I think CBS has a pretty stable lineup here and one night not even starting until November, so I don't think there's a ton of room for modest performers.

CANCELLED/ENDED: Bad Teacher, The Crazy Ones, Friends with Better Lives, Hostages, How I Met Your Mother, Intelligence, We Are Men

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
