UPFRONTS 2018: What CBS Will Do

Here's my CBS prediction!

Past CBS predictions: 2017   2016   2015   2014   2013   2012   2011

MONDAYS
8:00 Kevin Can Wait
8:30 Man with a Plan
9:00 MURPHY BROWN
9:30 WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans
CBS has to do something about their Mondays but I think they might leave the 8pm hour alone because I think they'll want to put Murphy Brown back in its old 9pm timeslot. Any comedy pilot could follow it but I am guessing Welcome to the Neighborhood. I think NCIS: New Orleans follows the NCIS: Los Angeles path and heads off of Tuesdays and onto Mondays at 10pm.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS
9:00 Bull
10:00 F.B.I.
I think CBS will leave the NCIS-Bull combo alone especially with This is Us and Roseanne both most likely on the night. I think they will try a new show at 10pm instead and Dick Wolf's F.B.I. seems like it might fit with this lineup.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Survivor
9:00 MURDER
10:00 SEAL Team
If CBS keeps SEAL Team on Wednesdays at 9pm, that is a huge mistake. I think they will renew Criminal Minds but for a shortened final season that bows at midseason. So I think they'll try a new drama at 9pm - perhaps Murder? - and slide SEAL Team back to 10pm.

THURSDAYS
8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 Young Sheldon
9:00 Mom
9:30 FAM
10:00 S.W.A.T.
I think CBS will leave Thursdays mostly alone except for trying a new comedy at 9:30pm, and my guess is Fam. I think they'll hold Life in Pieces for midseason.

FRIDAYS
8:00 MacGyver
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods
Despite their ugly performance this past Friday, I don't see this lineup changing.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores
10:00 48 Hours

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 MAGNUM P.I.
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Madam Secretary
Magnum P.I. is a hot pilot for CBS and I think it will get the Sunday 8pm slot that can get a big NFL boost in the fall. I think they'll leave NCIS: Los Angeles and Madam Secretary where they are.

MIDSEASON: THE CODE, GOD FRIENDED ME, PANDAS IN NEW YORK, UNTITLED DAMON WAYANS JR., The Amazing Race, Criminal Minds, Life in Pieces

CANCELLED/ENDED: 9JKL, Instinct, Living Biblically, Me Myself & I, Ransom, Scorpion, Superior Donuts, Wisdom of the Crowd

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
