The first cancellation of the season has arrived and it is Made in Jersey on CBS. No one expected spectacular ratings with a timeslot of Friday nights at 9pm but it completely bombed especially by CBS standards. It premiered to 7.8 million viewers and a 1.1 demo and then fell in week two to 6.8 million viewers and a horrible 0.8 demo. This was the most instant bust CBS has seen in a long time. It's too bad though because as I said in my quick hits, I think it was a better show than people gave it credit for. I'm also somewhat surprised it could get no traction airing on a night with other crime dramas set in NYC. CBS will move CSI: NY back to 9pm after it was languishing at 8pm immediately and air encores at 8pm until Undercover Boss returns to its previous slot on November 2. Made in Jersey has the dubious distinction of being the first cancelled show of the season. Previous shows with that distinction are FOX's Lone Star (2010) and NBC's The Playboy Club (2011). Looks like it's ABC's turn next year!
On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While Rhoda has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way. Rhoda could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...
