In an unsurprising move, FOX has renewed competition series The X Factor for a third season that will air next fall. Featuring former American Idol judge Simon Cowell, The X Factor was FOX's "next big thing" when it launched last fall. Simon Cowell predicted 20 million viewers for the show. Though it vastly improved FOX's fall numbers, it came in well below expectations and seemed like the third option behind Idol and The Voice. The show was retooled as Britney Spears and Demi Lovato were brought on as judges this season. The show has continued to do well but not spectacular and it isn't getting the numbers The Voice. But again, FOX would be in dire straits without it. The positive side is that it boosts FOX's numbers. The downside is that FOX has limited space to launch new shows without it taking up three hours and the ones they are launching aren't working.
The X Factor joins FOX's cartoons American Dad!, Bob's Burgers, The Simpsons, and Family Guy as well as NBC's The Voice for early renewals for the 2013-14 season.
