The Neighbors became the first new ABC show to earn a full season with an announcement today. The much maligned show with the very offbeat alien premise was originally slated for 9:30pm on Wednesdays but switched slots with Suburgatory over the summer before it even premiered and has been airing at 8:30pm. It had a promising preview after Modern Family followed by a big second week drop when it moved to 8:30pm. Since then however, the show has stabilized as it has gotten a 1.9 or 2.0 demo every week since episode two.
This has to be considered one of the bigger surprises as The Neighbors had a horrible pilot and was one of the worst reviewed shows of the new season. I'll be honest, I haven't given it a second chance but some have said it's gotten better. It's not getting spectacular ratings but none of ABC's new shows are and ABC is showing a commitment to a show that actually seems like a pretty good fit with The Middle so far. ABC's other new shows - Last Resort, 666 Park Avenue, and Nashville have yet to get a full season or a cancellation. Nashville seems the most likely to get a full season of the three while Resort and Park have additional script orders. With this news, ABC also announced that second year series Scandal has been given a full season.
