As many ABC shows experienced a bloodbath today, four younger series got good news from the Alphabet network as American Crime was renewed for a third season and Dr. Ken, The Real O'Neals, and The Catch were renewed for a second season.
With The Good Wife ending, American Crime can stake a claim as the most critically acclaimed drama on a broadcast network. Airing as a bridge on Wednesdays between Nashville's fall and spring run, American Crime had low but steady ratings and just as much acclaim as season one. Being an anthology, it will be an entirely new setting with a new story and new characters.
The three freshmen renewed had three different stories. Dr. Ken has broken the Friday 8:30pm curse that killed Malibu Country, The Neighbors, and Cristela over the last few seasons. Dr. Ken was critically savaged but was a successful pair with Last Man Standing. Last Man has not been renewed yet as negotiations are always difficult for that show, but this Dr. Ken renewal has to be a promising development. The Real O'Neals was steady but nothing special on Tuesday nights but ABC sees some promise there and it fits like a glove with the other family comedies. ABC has to be planning to add another comedy hour with seven comedy series already renewed. The Catch was probably the biggest surprise but it comes from Shondaland and has been steady after an underwhelming debut.
