After some no brainer renewals yesterday, ABC renewed the next wave, a bunch of series on the spectrum from obvious renewals to surprises.
Scandal was renewed for a second season. The show has been remarkably steady airing after Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays and has gotten positive buzz. Though it really didn't improve from Private Practice's ratings, it probably has room to grow. Speaking of Practice, it was renewed for a fifth (and likely final) season of 13 episodes. The show always did ok airing after Grey's but the results have been mixed since it was sent to Tuesdays. Still, it has been airing long enough that ABC found a way to give it 13 more episodes. A third drama renewed (and the most surprising) was Body of Proof for a third season. The show looked completely dead during the winter but then it had a rejuvenation airing after Dancing with the Stars for a few weeks and it did enough to get a 13 episode renewal as ABC's only pure procedural. Some speculate that it might be headed to Fridays so we'll see.
Three comedies were also renewed. Last Man Standing was renewed for a second season. Tim Allen's return to ABC got off to a great start but the ratings fizzled this spring. Many think this will be paired with Reba McEntire's new show for an old school sitcom block. Despite the ratings drop, I don't think this renewal was ever in question. Happy Endings was renewed for a third season and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 was renewed for a second season. Both shows aired after Modern Family this season and did well in numbers but not as great in retention. Still, they are both buzzy and will likely be paired together next season. Endings was renewed for a full 22 episodes.
Finally, unscripted shows America's Funniest Home Videos and Wife Swap were renewed. Videos does well in its Sunday 7pm slot and has been airing on the network for over 20 years so that is not surprising at all. Wife Swap has aired on and off for ABC over the last eight years and presented a decently rated Celebrity edition as filler this year. It will likely continue to be used as filler.
