ABC was all new on the first night of February sweeps starting with Wipeout which was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Its numbers would be great without the Idol competition but it is holding its own in this competitive hour. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy returned and was down a million viewers but even in the demo from its last original airing three weeks ago. It still remains the demo powerhouse at 9pm. At 10pm, Private Practice was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from its last original airing a month ago, hitting season lows. Will next year be the year that ABC finally tries a new show in this timeslot? It should be while Grey's Anatomy still has a little bit of power.

CBS was all new with its regular lineup. At 8pm, The Big Bang Theory was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from its last original airing. This show can clearly square off with American Idol with no problem. At 8:30pm was $#*! My Dad Says which was up 1.8 million viewers and half a demo point from last week when it aired after an Big Bang repeat. This show has two more episodes to prove to CBS that it deserves to be back next year. At 9pm, CSI was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from its last original airing two weeks ago despite a little-promoted return by former star William Petersen. This show is still a powerful total viewer performer but it slipped to fourth in the demo for the time period. Will CBS send it to another night (like Friday) next week? At 10pm, The Mentalist was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week to be a powerful 10pm performer despite the old-skew.

NBC was a mess on Thursday night with its batch of low-rated comedies. At 8pm, Community was down two tenths in viewers and the demo. The viewer total tied a season low. This show doesn't deserve renewal but will it get one because of the lack of other options? At 8:30pm, Perfect Couples slipped another four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. This show has fallen fast from a low debut and may not even survive February sweeps. At 9pm, The Office was the only bright spot despite being down six tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo, towering over the other shows in both categories. Parks and Recreation slipped a lot after two solid weeks as it was down nine tenths in viewers and six tenths in the demo. Sadly, it appears this is a niche show like all others on this schedule except The Office. At 10pm, 30 Rock was down just a tenth in viewers and even in the demo despite first-run competition on CBS and ABC, which is a bit of positive news. But at 10:30pm, Outsourced was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. The viewer total is a series low. NBC just can't seem to figure things out.

Finally FOX led things off with the powerful American Idol which was six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. It is slowly dipping but still strong in its third week of audition episodes. At 9pm, Bones was down a rough 1.9 million viewers and six tenths in the demo and its retention out of Idol was very poor. Perhaps it was hurt by new dramas on CBS and ABC? Either way, FOX continues to have a hard time finding any adequate lead-outs of the mighty Idol.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
