ABC had another lackluster Tuesday night even with the preemption of Detroit 1-8-7. At 8pm, No Ordinary Family was down two tenths in viewers and tenth in the demo for more series lows. There's no way ABC should be renewing this show as it faded fast and now has bottomed out. At 9pm, though, V was down three tenths in viewers but even in the demo. The 1.9 demo isn't great but it has been very steady and the bright spot on a bad night for ABC. It may earn another half season renewal given the state of ABC dramas. At 10pm, Detroit was preempted for a special of Primetime: What Would You Do? which was behind Detroit in viewer totals but ahead of it in the demo from recent weeks. Overall, it didn't make much of a difference for ABC.

CBS had some good and bad news on Tuesday night. The good news was from 8-10pm. At 8pm, NCIS was up a nice 1.9 million viewers and eight tenths in the demo after last week's dip. It also tied in the hour in the demo against Glee for the first time. This veteran drama has been indestructible and seems to be stronger than ever in its eighth season. Not competing with American Idol has helped it this spring as well. The good news continued at 9pm where NCIS: Los Angeles was up 1.9 million viewers as well and six tenths in the demo to post season highs. Will CBS separate this powerful block next season to bolster other nights? At 10pm though, the news was not as good. Despite being up half a million viewers and even in the demo, The Good Wife was behind NBC's Parenthood in the demo and had terrible retention from NCIS: Los Angeles. It doesn't seem like CBS would cancel this critically acclaimed drama but a move to another night seems very likely as CBS can probably find a more compatible show for 10pm.

NBC had a decent Tuesday night. At 8pm, The Biggest Loser was down a tenth in viewers but even in the demo from last week. With Glee back, this show isn't as strong as it was at the beginning of the winter edition. At 10pm though, Parenthood was up four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo and registered a time period win in the demo for the first time this season against The Good Wife. This family drama skews very young and any show that can win the time period for NBC seems sure to get a renewal. After a rough fall, Parenthood has had a solid spring so far.

FOX was up across the board but didn't post huge gains anywhere. At 8pm, Glee was up a tenth in viewers and two tenths in the demo but only tied NCIS in the demo after posting big outright wins earlier in the season. Part of this is due to Glee being a bit weaker but NCIS has also been stronger. At 9pm, Raising Hope was up six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's lows and still seems to rely heavily on its strong lead-in. At 9:30pm, Traffic Light was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo, reversing its downward trend. It's still way too low but FOX may not give up on it yet.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
