ABC was all new on Valentine's Day and took a slight hit for its female-skewing shows. At 8pm, The Bachelor was down half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo from last week. The drop can likely be somewhat attributed to the holiday and it should be back up  next week. At 10pm, Castle was down half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo. This show still seems to be more lead-in dependent than ABC would prefer and it should inevitably pick up again when it follows Dancing with the Stars starting in late March.

CBS was all new including the series premiere of new sitcom Mad Love. At 8pm, How I Met Your Mother was down half a million viewers but just a tenth in the demo, showing a good hold especially considering it was Valentine's Day. The series premiere of Mad Love followed and was below recent numbers for Rules of Engagement in this slot but still a solid sampling. It is in a cushy timeslot so its not likely to have a huge drop next week. At 9pm, Two and a Half Men was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week. For the foreseeable future, Men will air repeats as the total episode order was cut to 20 and probably won't be back with new episodes until April thanks to Charlie Sheen's troubles. Despite Men being down, Mike & Molly was up three tenths in viewers and the demo for its best numbers since November. The show seems to be gaining in strength and it will need it as it will not have new episodes of Men as a lead-in for awhile. Finally at 10pm, Hawaii Five-0 was down three tenths in viewers but even in the demo, winning the three headed race in both categories for the hour.

NBC was all new with the same old story. At 8pm, Chuck was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo from last week but still too low for a show that keeps on chugging at NBC. At 9pm, The Cape was down another half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo for series lows. It only has two scheduled weeks left but should NBC even let it do that? It is really bringing down the whole night. At 10pm, Harry's Law was down seven tenths in viewers for series lows but even in the demo. This would probably be stronger with a better and more compatible lead-in. Either way, at these levels its still an adequate performer for NBC and may pop back up when ABC and/or CBS are in repeats next Month.

FOX was down significantly from last week, which aired right out of the Super Bowl. At 8pm, House was down 2.4 million viewers and nine tenths in the demo from last week's season highs. Last week was abnormally high but this week was lower than usual as it took quite a big hit. Week two of The Chicago Code followed and was down a rough 2 million viewers and four tenths in the demo from last week. This drop should not be too surprising but it's already getting close to Lie to Me levels which doesn't bode well for the freshman cop drama.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
