FRESHMAN SCORECARD: February 2013

Time for the Freshman Scorecard! As always, these are ranked based on my opinions of best to worst chance of survival. If interested, check out last month's scorecard as well as past February scorecards from 2012 and 2011. By the time the March scorecard rolls around, we'll be able to add CBS's The Job and Golden Boy and ABC's Zero Hour to the lists!

ABC

Nashville - I think the numbers continue to be disappointing but ABC seems very behind this show and they pretty much have to be with the way their freshmen have gone. I can't imagine them not giving it a second season.

Malibu Country - This show seems to rise and fall but I still think the Friday night slot will be its saving grace where the pressure is lower.

The Neighbors - I would say this show has overperformed all year long yet I'm still not sure it'll get a renewal. It's right on the edge.

The Taste - It had a solid premiere but tumbled in week two and I think it's going to continue to fall.

Last Resort/666 Park Avenue - Cancelled

CBS

Elementary - It will surely see a series high on Sunday after the Super Bowl and I think it CBS hands out early renewals like last year, this will be one of them.

Vegas - It rose to its highest level in months on Tuesday but that was only a 1.9 demo. This show really needs Golden Boy to fail.

Made in Jersey/Partners - Cancelled

NBC

Revolution - It doesn't return until March and it would have to fall real hard to not get a second season.

Chicago Fire - The biggest overperformer of any new show - this show has done better than anyone expected and is all but assured a second season.

Go On - Its numbers have collapsed without The Voice lead-in but I think NBC will still save this show and its numbers will surely get better when The Voice returns. I also think NBC's not going to cancel all their comedies so this one has the best shot.

Guys with Kids - The only hope for this show is that NBC decides to aggressively go for multi-cam sitcoms in the fall then it stands a chance, a very small chance.

The New Normal - This show has collapsed even worse than Go On and it's doing worse than most Wednesday and Thursday shows. NBC wants this to work but I think they'll pull the plug at the end of the season.

1600 Penn - This show is off to a real weak start on Thursday nights and I have a feeling every Thursday show except Parks and Recreation will be gone with The Office and 30 Rock ending.

Do No Harm - I have not seen any ratings yet for this show but I don't think it's going to survive based on the reviews and the timeslot.

Take it All - It could come back for another holiday run but I doubt it.

Deception - This show doesn't stand a chance. NBC has enough dramas working that this Monday flop will probably run its course until Revolution comes back and then disappear.

Animal Practice - Cancelled

FOX

The Following - FOX's newest entry is off to a roaring start with a strong debut and then growth in its second episode, something no other show has done. It's got a long way to go but signs are real promising.

The Mindy Project - It is still only in the mid 1s even when New Girl had a nice rise this week. I'm starting to think FOX is going to cancel this one just like Ben and Kate. New Girl can have a better partner.

Ben and Kate/The Mob Doctor - Cancelled

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
