NBC kicked off Wednesday night with its new "Happy Hour" lineup of Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? At 8pm, Whitney was actually up 1.7 million viewers and a tenth in the demo from its last Thursday 9:30pm airing. While not impressive overall, the fact that it rose that much from a more cushioned timeslot is a bit encouraging. New sitcom Are You There, Chelsea? got some decent sampling by NBC standards. It will be interesting to see how these shows do next week against American Idol. If they were to hold near here, NBC would be happy but that seems very very unlikely. At 9pm, Harry's Law was up 1.3 million viewers and even in the demo from its last new airing. At 10pm, Law & Order: SVU was up 1.4 million viewers and a tenth in the demo as it will always benefit without CSI and vice-versa.
Over on ABC, The Middle started off the night down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo. Suburgatory followed and was dead even with last week which is a strong showing considering every other show in the lineup dropped at least some. At 9pm, Modern Family was hit the hardest as it was down a big 1.9 million viewers and six tenths in the demo. Last week was high but this is still a surprising steep drop. At 9:30pm, Happy Endings was down eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Revenge closed out the night down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo. While the ratings may not be living up to the buzz, this is still a solid hit for ABC in a timeslot that has been a disaster for them for awhile. CBS aired the Peoples Choice Awards and saw slightly lower numbers than last year.
