Today's award is Outstanding Directing of a Drama Series!
This year's nominees are...
STEPHEN DALDRY, The Crown "Sleep, Dearie, Sleep" (Netflix)
NATHAN FIELDER, The Curse "Young Hearts" (Showtime)
ALEX GABASSI, The Crown "Ritz" (Netflix)
HIRO MURAI, Mr. & Mrs. Smith "First Date" (Prime Video)
JIM FIELD SMITH, Hijack "Brace Brace Brace" (Apple TV+)
CHRISTOPHER STORER, The Bear "Fishes" (FX/Hulu)
MORTEN TYLDUM, Silo "Machines" (Apple TV+)
And the Winner Is...
CHRISTOPHER STORER
The Bear "Fishes" (FX/Hulu)
For the second year in a row, Christopher Storer takes this award for The Bear. Last year, he won for the extremely economical "Review" episode that clocked in under 20 minutes. This year, he wins for the longest episode of the series to date - the holiday instant classic "Fishes." The second season of The Bear was less frenetic than the first season but the holiday episode brought back all the hallmarks that made the first season a stressful experience. The episode managed to capture a busy family holiday (talking over each other, inane conversations, race against the clock with food and more) and also captured how tense arguments can get at a family get-together. Storer did a masterful job introducing a capturing the complete chaos that built on itself as the episode went on.
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
There are two episodes of The Crown among the nominees. I thought the Princess Margaret-focused "Ritz" episode was the best of the final season while the series finale wrapped up the series well and did a good job incorporating Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman. The pilot episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith was paced extremely well and had great action sequences. The penultimate episode of The Curse was the best version of the show before the wacky finale. The finale of Hijack brought the, ahem, season to a safe landing. Finally, the "Machines" episode of Silo really propelled the series forward and had an extremely tense and well directed task to complete.
