This year's nominees are...

MARGHERITA BUY as Signora Buffi in Ripley (Netflix)

ALICE HALSEY as Madeline Zott in Lessons in Chemistry (Apple TV+)

AJA NAOMI KING as Harriet Sloane in Lessons in Chemistry (Apple TV+)

JENNIFER JASON LEIGH as Lorraine Lyon in Fargo (FX)

RICHA MOORJANI as Indira Olmstead in Fargo (FX)

And the Winner Is...
JENNIFER JASON LEIGH
Fargo (FX)
Jennifer Jason Leigh was a larger than life figure in Fargo's fifth season. There was some criticism that her performance was not as grounded or a bit more performative than the rest of the characters this season, but I don't agree with that. I think she brought such a unique energy to a season that had a bunch of different types of characters. She went from doing the gun toting Christmas card thing to being an ardent defender of Juno Temple's Dot. Yes, her deliveries were outrageous sometimes but she gave such a confident, funny and unique performance with a very memorable accent. I think her personality was very needed for the season of Fargo to work as well as it did.

Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
This entire category is made up of three shows, with two actresses from each show. Leigh's co-star Richa Moorjani was a much more grounded character and I felt like they didn't always do enough with her character but she had one extremely satisfying scene. On Ripley, Margherita Buy was a really interesting character and an underrated member of the cast while Dakota Fanning became a much more important character as the series went. Finally on Lessons in Chemistry, Aja Naomi King's storyline was choppy at best but she delivered it with gusto. And the young Alice Halsey had strength and depth beyond her years.

Tomorrow: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series!
