Today's award is Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series!
This year's nominees are...
CAROL BURNETT as Norma Dellacorte in Palm Royale (Apple TV+)
CASSIDY FREEMAN as Amber Gemstone in The Righteous Gemstones (HBO)
JANELLE JAMES as Ava Coleman in Abbott Elementary (ABC)
PAULA PELL as Gloria McManus in Girls5Eva (Netflix)
SHERYL LEE RALPH as Barbara Howard in Abbott Elementary (ABC)
MEGAN STALTER as Kayla Schaefer in Hacks (Max)
LISA ANN WALTER as Melissa Schemmenti in Abbott Elementary (ABC)
And the Winner Is...
JANELLE JAMES
Abbott Elementary (ABC)
Janelle James won in this category two years ago for the first season of Abbott Elementary. In the second season of Abbott, I loved the show but had reservations about the direction they were taking James' character. The third season was the reverse. I thought the show had some creative misfires, especially later in the season, but re-found its mojo for James' Principal Ava Coleman. From the "new Ava" we saw at the beginning of the season to her classic one-liners to the occasional human moment, she was great all season. The show has done a good job of not pushing her too far over the edge of incompetence or trying to change her too much. They stayed true to the character and James delivered a stellar season with a lot of laughs.
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
Just like last year, there were three Abbott Elementary ladies in the category. Sheryl Lee Ralph and especially Lisa Ann Walter turned in great seasons with lots of great character moments. Carol Burnett was the only good performance in the mess that was Palm Royale. She was the only one who had any good comedic timing and one of the only reasons to keep watching. I thought Paula Pell was the stealth MVP of the third season of Girls5Eva. Cassidy Freeman was given more to do in the third season of The Righteous Gemstones and is becoming a stronger character. But the biggest threat to James was Megan Stalter who made the most of her appearances as a new regular in Hacks with hilarious comedic timing.
Tomorrow: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series!
