NBC has made the first real pickup of pilot season by giving an early green light to the new Matthew Perry single camera sitcom Go On. In it, Perry plays a sportscaster who is dealing with a personal loss and finds friendship in a mandatory support group. The supporting cast includes Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Allison Miller, and Khary Payton.
Perry was a hit on NBC for ten years as part of the Friends ensemble but has had two failed series in the years since - Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was a lavish drama that faltered in the 2006-07 season on NBC while Perry returned to comedy in ABC's Mr. Sunshine last year. Despite airing after Modern Family, it never found its rhythm or audience. While NBC obviously likes Perry, this sounds a bit like all their other low-rated single camera sitcoms. If any network needs to go in a different direction with comedy (and in general), it's NBC. But we'll see how this goes.
Go On joins the straight to series orders of Hannibal on NBC and Mistresses on ABC as official new series for next season.
