FRESHMAN SCORECARD: April 2012

Time for the April scorecard! We have had a few renewals already now but there is much to be decided between now and upfronts! If interested, check out the March scorecard as well as last April's scorecard. As always, shows are ranked from best to worst chance of survival.

ABC

Once Upon a Time/Suburgatory/Revenge/Last Man Standing - All have been rumored to be renewed but ABC has yet to make an official announcement. Official or not, all four of these freshmen are coming back.

GCB - ABC's potential Desperate Housewives successor got off to a ho-hum start but it has held up pretty well since which helps its renewal chances. We'll see how the next month goes but I'm thinking this gets at least a half season renewal.

Celebrity Wife Swap - I still think we'll see this as filler next year.

Missing - The new Thursday drama has done ok in total viewers but poorly in the demo. ABC has plenty of dramas so this is very unlikely to see a season two unless things perk up in a big way.

The River - It ended its season in March and there have been no official announcements but there's no way this is coming back.

Pan Am/You Deserve It - Not official cancellations but no chance.

Work It/Man Up!/Charlie's Angels - Cancelled

CBS

2 Broke Girls/Person of Interest - The two freshman hits were officially renewed as part of CBS's big wave of renewals.

Rob - It's likely coming down to this or Rules of Engagement as a utility player renewal and I could truly see it going either way.

Unforgettable - It was not a good sign that this did not get a renewal with 15 other CBS series. It has been very mediocre this year and CBS has a wealth of dramas. Its chances are not good.

A Gifted Man - Not officially cancelled but definitely not coming back.

How to Be a Gentleman - Cancelled

NBC

Grimm/Smash - The only two NBC renewals including veteran shows are the two freshmen that haven't been complete flops.

Whitney - By NBC standards, it hasn't completely died on Wednesday night. Though the numbers are low, it wouldn't stun me to see it get a renewal and put with some broader, multicam new shows.

Up All Night - This show has really fallen apart this spring. It is tanking on Thursdays despite most people thinking the Thursday move was good. I thought it still might get renewed despite the sinking numbers but after last Thursday's 2.9 million viewers and 1.2 demo, I'm not so sure anymore.

Fashion Star - It's not looking good after three weeks but it is most likely cheaper so we'll see. However, I see this being like America's Next Great Restaurant last year - finishing its run and then being forgotten.

Rock Center with Brian Williams - Unlikely, but could stay on as a filler.

Are You There Chelsea? - If Whitney is on the bubble for a renewal then this one is definitely not coming back.

Awake - It had a decent start but has fallen apart quickly. It's 1.0 demo last week most certainly sealed its fate.

Bent - The lowest debut ever on the big four broadcast networks would have been yanked already if it wasn't burning off six episodes in three weeks.

The Firm - Banished to Saturdays and tanking there.

Prime Suspect/Free Agents/The Playboy Club - Cancelled

FOX

The X-Factor - Renewed

New Girl - It's being left on an island on Tuesday but it's for sure coming back. I'm surprised there hasn't been an official renewal.

Touch - It had a great preview in January and solid debut in March but the next week saw a huge drop. Still, FOX's dramas are hurting and I fully expect this to get another chance in the fall even if it continues to drop.

Napoleon Dynamite - We'll see what FOX does with its cartoons but this one at least has a fighting chance, like Bob's Burgers last year.

Alcatraz/The Finder - Not officially cancelled but very very unlikely to return.

Q'Viva: The Chosen/I Hate My Teenage Daughter - Also not officially cancelled but banished to late night/summer. So they're not coming back.

Terra Nova/Allen Gregory - Cancelled

Come May, we will only have a few weeks left until upfronts so there may be more renewals and cancellations plus late entries BFFs, Betty White's Off Their Rockers, Scandal, Apartment 23, and NYC 22 will join the list!

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...

DECADE IN REVIEW: The Best Comedies of the 2010s

During the month of December, I will be looking back at the decade that was the 2010s on TV. I will be sharing my favorite sitcoms, dramas, the best episodes, the best performances and the worst shows of the decade. To be eligible for this list, a show had to air the majority of its episodes in the 2010s. However, for the rankings and determination, all episodes were taken into account, including ones that may have aired before 2010. I will also preface that there are comedies that have aired this decade that I haven't watched yet so this is the best of what I have watched. To be fair, that preface is more true for dramas. There's not a ton of unwatched comedies sitting in my Netflix or Amazon watchlist. So here are my Top 10 comedies of the 2010s! Close Calls:  Master of None (Netflix) - An inconsistent but occasionally fascinating commentary on many life issues done so with innovative storytelling. The Good Place (NBC) - A show that aims high with a fascinating premis...
