And the Winner Is...
DEATH BY LIGHTNING
Netflix
The limited series Death by Lightning captured a time and story in American history that doesn't get the attention that many other eras get. And the show masterfully captured the 1880s. Despite being filmed overseas (what isn't these days), the show had a unique look that made the story feel fresh and not like a stodgy period piece. Not to mention the costumes and beards! The most impressive scenes were in the convention hall. While I'm sure there was a lot of trickery and not thousands upon thousands of extras, it was filmed in such a way that you really got a sense of what that room in that era was like.
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
A few shows on this list really captured their era. It may not have quite been at the level of The People vs. OJ Simpson but Love Story had a lot of technical flourishes that put it firmly in the 90s. And Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy really captured the bleakness of its story with its visual storytelling that also had tremendous attention to period detail. Half Man also matched its grim story with its visual language while Beef remained very visually interesting and provocative in its second season despite a completely different story. But the runner-up was probably Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat not so much for the visual flair but for the incredible detail it took to pull off what they pulled off in a more difficult setting than the first season.
Tomorrow: Outstanding Technical Design of a Drama Series!
