QUICK HITS: March 6, 2016

As I did last year, these are my top 10 potential pilots looking at the lists. This is purely based on synopsis and sometimes cast. As is clear from last year, they don't always work out (my #1 and #3 shows ended up being duds while #2, #4, and #5 didn't even get picked up).

1. Bunker Hill (CBS, Drama) - This is near the top of the list thanks to its writer, Jason Katims. After Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, I'll watch anything from Katims. Set in the medical world, this could be an interesting character-based medical drama.

2. Designated Survivor (ABC, Drama) - Already picked up to series, this drama starring Kiefer Sutherland as a low level Cabinet member who becomes president following an attack during the State of the Union is a very intriguing concept. We know Sutherland can be captivating in intense action shows from his many years on 24.

3. Making History (FOX, Comedy) - A very interesting concept with three friends who find a way to time travel and go to some of the best moments in history as they try to work out their issues. This kind of concept often seems to be in a drama, not a comedy so I'm intrigued.

4. I'm Not Your Friend (CBS, Comedy) - Matt LeBlanc comes back to network TV with a family comedy. Despite less than stellar efforts from Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox in the past, I'm still curious to see another Friend return to network TV.

5. Conviction (ABC, Drama) - I liked Hayley Atwell but Marvel's Agent Carter wasn't my type of show. This sounds some procedural-ish but that's not a negative in my book and I like the idea of solving cases where the wrong person was prosecuted. Seems like it could build on the interest in documentaries like Making a Murderer.

6. Dream Team (ABC, Comedy) - Centered on a successful soccer coach starting from scratch with 8 year olds (and their parents), this sounds like a funny comedy that could easily fit the ABC lineup.

7. Toast (ABC, Comedy) - Yes, this is a comedy from Shondaland, which seems hard to picture but has me intrigued. It also seems like it has an element of How I Met Your Mother as it centers on a couple on their wedding day and flashes back to how they got to that point.

8. Pitch (FOX, Drama) - This drama is about the first woman to play major league baseball. With a good cast and concept, this could be a winner.

9. Me and Mean Margaret (NBC, Comedy) - Starring Stockard Channing as an unbearable movie star who needs to be "babysat" by a 27 year old lawyer, this sounds like it could be a great vehicle for Channing and that's a good thing.

10. The Jury (ABC, Drama) - This sounds like a high concept, but interesting drama that follows a single court case told from the individual perspectives of each juror. It seems like it has potential to be a twist on a familiar formula.

And also...
Chicago Law (NBC, Drama) - This seems excessive but at the same time, I like all three Chicago shows currently on the air so I'm intrigued.

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...
