At 9pm, Scandal was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. Then the new Shondaland show, The Catch , premiered to a pretty weak 5.9 million viewers and 1.2 demo. It couldn'...

RENEWAL ALERT: NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Elementary, Scorpion, 2 Broke Girls, Mom, Survivor, The Amazing Race

CBS handed out a flurry of renewals today to veteran shows, joining The Big Bang Theory and NCIS , which were already renewed for 2016-17. Now on the renewal list is dramas NCIS: New Orleans (season 3), NCIS: Los Angeles (season 8), Blue Bloods (season 7), Hawaii Five-0 (season 7), Madam Secretary (season 3), Elementary (season 5), and Scorpion (season 3). Of those dramas, only Hawaii Five-0 and Elementary seemed to possibly be on the bubble but they are part of the CBS syndication factory so the renewal was never much in doubt. Also renewed were comedies 2 Broke Girls (season 6) and Mom (season 4) and long time reality shows Survivor (33rd/34th editions) and The Amazing Race (29th/30th editions). More notable is what was missing from the CBS renewal list: veteran Criminal Minds , bubble show CSI: Cyber, and all their freshman shows: Supergirl, Limitless, Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, and Life in Pieces . Les Moonves hinted most of the freshmen will come back and Mind...

RENEWAL ALERT: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Last Man on Earth

FOX renewed two of its many bubble comedies today, handing out a fourth season to Brooklyn Nine-Nine and a third season to The Last Man on Earth . Both shows were part of the Sunday lineup in the fall before being sent elsewhere for Bordertown and Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life . Brooklyn was moved to Tuesdays at 9pm where it has struggled in a weak comedy lineup. It also seems to have lost some of its early critical buzz. However, it proved its worth after how weak Cooper was in its place on Sundays. Speaking of showing its worth, The Last Man on Earth was brought back to Sundays at 9:30pm sooner than planned thanks to Bordertown tanking. Both these shows have small ratings but FOX found out that it could be a whole lot worse. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man on Earth join Bob's Burgers, Bones, Empire, Gotham, Scream Queens, and The Simpsons on the renewal list for next year. New Girl is sure to join while Grandfathered stands a better chance than The Grinder...

It came in below its fall premiere but in line with much of its fall performance. At 10pm, Castle was up eight tenths in viewers and even in the demo. CANCELLATION ALERT: Of Kings and Prophets

After just two episodes, Of Kings and Prophets has been cancelled by ABC. First, it was delayed from a 10pm Sunday fall timeslot. Then, it got ABC's cursed Tuesday 10pm slot for midseason and premiered at an anemic 0.8 demo before collapsing to a 0.5 demo this week. It lasted even shorter than Wicked City did in the fall. So, two shows have lasted a total of 5 episodes in this slot. It must make ABC miss Forever  from last year. It will be replaced by Beyond the Tank for the rest of the season. This is just another Tuesday 10pm disaster for ABC. Since this blog started, I have seen Detroit 1-8-7, Body of Proof, Private Practice (at the end of its run), Lucky 7, Killer Women, Mind Games, Forever, Marvel's Agent Carter, Wicked City, and Of Kings and Prophets in this slot. And that's just the scripted shows. Only Body of Proof and (undeservedly) Marvel's Agent Carter  lasted more than one season here and many of them have lasted just a couple weeks.

CANCELLATION ALERT: Person of Interest

Person of Interest got a long-delayed premiere date and cancellation announcement in the same day from CBS. The show will have its season premiere on May 3 and end its five season run on June 21 after double pumping episodes on Mondays and Tuesdays for May and June. Person of Interest was a very hot pilot and new show in 2011. It came with high expectations and initially was underwhelming in the prime Thursday 9pm slot. However, it slowly caught on as the season went on and then it really made some noise in season two (it's best numbers of all time came in January of its second season). In 2013, it was moved to 10pm Tuesdays when CBS wanted to expand its Thursday comedy block to two hours. After two years on Tuesday with a big decline in 2014-15, it was held to midseason and saw its episode order cut to 13 so the writing was on the wall. It probably would have gotten more of a CBS syndication push had it been owned by the network and the fact that it wasn't didn't help ...

RENEWAL ALERT: Gotham

FOX announced today that Gotham has been renewed for a third season. The Batman prequel drama was a hot commodity in season one but it faded as it went on. Then this year, it returned to disappointing numbers but held steady for the most part through the fall. It returned from a winter hiatus to decent numbers but fell this week. Either way, with FOX's major problems on other nights (Tuesdays, Thursdays without American Idol , and Sundays to an extent), this is an OK performer that also gets solid delayed viewing numbers.

The "After the Final Rose" special delivered the best 10pm numbers ABC has seen in awhile. On NBC, The Voice inched past The Bachelor but it was c...

RENEWAL ALERT: Little Big Shots

In an unsurprising move, NBC has renewed Little Big Shots just two episodes (and one week) into its first season. The new unscripted show, hosted by Steve Harvey, has had a spectacular start. It followed up near 100% retention of The Voice in a preview last Tuesday with a truly amazing performance in its regular timeslot. It had 15 million viewers and a 2.8 demo, which was enough to make it the most watched show of the week. It appears that anything Steve Harvey is untouchable lately and this has the added bonus of Ellen DeGeneres behind it. It seems very likely to become a central show in NBC's expanding unscripted universe with The Voice, America's Got Talent, and football.
