NBC renewed three more shows and all have a bit of an interesting element to them: Undateable, The Night Shift, and The Mysteries of Laura.
Most interesting is the renewal of Undateable, which will do every season three show LIVE. I believe this will be the first regular scripted series that will be live every week since the 1950s. This is certainly an interesting element and it will make me more curious to tune in. The show was a surprise success in summer 2014 and did enough this spring to come back. It will be NBC's ONLY returning comedy after another disastrous year in that genre. NBC is making a major push for live shows from their musicals to the Neil Patrick Harris variety show to this. It's an interesting approach on a network that needs something like this.
Two underdog dramas also got the nod. The Night Shift was another successful summer 2014 show but it had trouble following The Voice this spring in a much higher profile timeslot. Being the third medical drama scheduled for NBC next year, I have to wonder if this will end up being a summer show again. The Mysteries of Laura is the only newbie to get renewed by NBC and that's probably because it wasn't the instant bomb that shows like Allegiance and American Odyssey were. It has been renewed for 13 episodes and could be a candidate for Friday nights.
