A week after a stunning Sunday, FOX came crashing back to Earth on the second Sunday of the season. It didn't have a direct NFL lead-in, but the drops were stunningly horrible. The season premiere of Bob's Burgers did OK at 7:30pm, much better than it was doing in the same slot in the spring. But things got worse from there. At 8pm, The Simpsons fell 4.2 million viewers and 1.9 demo points, and that wasn't even the worst drop. The best week to week show was Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which fell "only" 2.2 million viewers and a full demo point. After getting its best numbers since early 2011, Family Guy collapsed 4.9 million viewers and 2.6 demo points for a series low. This was one of the worst week-to-week performances I have ever seen. The news got even worse at 9:30pm when the series premiere of Mulaney was completely DOA with an anemic 2.3 million viewers and a 1.0 demo. I expect we'll see Bob's Burgers at 9:30pm sooner rather than later. Even for FOX, this was a disastrous debut. Of course, FOX will rise and fall with the NFL in the coming months. While last week was abnormally high, they have to hope this week was abnormally low.

Over on ABC, the Frozen effect was still strong for Once Upon a Time as it was down a respectable million viewers and four tenths in the demo to a 3.3. It is still way ahead in year-to-year comparisons, which is very impressive for a show that did not change timeslots. At 9pm, Resurrection stumbled after a solid season premiere last week. It was down 1.7 million viewers and half a demo point. The viewer total was a series low. After a surprising performance last week, this is more what I expected from this show in season two, and I think it'll continue to drop. At 10pm, Revenge was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. While not good, things could have been worse here.

On CBS, a blowout NFL game of the Chargers over the Jets resulted in a not as strong NFL lead-in so 60 Minutes was well below its last NFL lead-in edition. Madam Secretary followed and was down half a million viewers but up two tenths in the demo. It skewed a bit younger this week, perhaps due to football, but it's holding its own in this slot. At 9:30pm, The Good Wife was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo. CSI closed out the night down 1.4 million viewers and even in the demo. The viewer total is a series low, but it did start at 10:30pm so that has to be taken into account. Finally on NBC, the Patriots-Bengals contest was significantly down from last week's Cowboys-Saints matchup.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Once Upon a Time (ABC)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Mulaney (FOX)

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
