On a night that saw AMC's The Walking Dead premiere to 17.3 million viewers and an 8.7 demo: nearly twice as strong as any regular broadcast show in the demo and the most watched non-sports cable programming ever, some of broadcast networks took a hit. The season premiere of America's Funniest Home Videos did OK against football at 7pm. At 8pm, Once Upon a Time was down a heavy 1.3 million viewers and six tenths in the demo. It's still up year-to-year but coming back down a bit as the Frozen effect is cooling. At 9pm, Resurrection was down 1.1 million viewers and half a demo point to a series low. I think it's pretty safe to assume this show is going to be done when it finishes its episode order for this season, and ABC will find something new for the spring. At 10pm, Revenge was down six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for a series low. This is another show that may be finishing its run, though I expect ABC will let it run the full season.
CBS did not have the direct NFL lead-in this week, so the early shows were understandably down. 60 Minutes fell big, but it was up a bit from the last time CBS didn't have an NFL lead-in. At 8pm, Madam Secretary was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. It was up a tenth from the last time it had a lower lead-in, so this was a decent performance. It's still skewing old, but the total viewers are holding up much better than I expected. At 9pm, The Good Wife was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. CSI started half an hour earlier and was up eight tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo for a season high. Maybe viewers are starting to find it on Sunday or maybe it was just the earlier start time.
NBC had a season low for Sunday Night Football thanks to a blowout from the Eagles over the Giants. FOX was back on the upswing with an NFL lead-in. At 8pm, The Simpsons was up three million viewers and 1.3 demo points. That's the difference football can make... unbelievable. Brooklyn Nine-Nine followed and was up 1.2 million viewers and six tenths in the demo. This show is performing admirably in its new slot. I don't think an animated show would be doing much better here. Family Guy was a repeat, but week two of Mulaney was up a tenth in the demo even as it was down a tenth in viewers. While it's one of the few new shows to rise with its second episode, it's still incredibly low. The only thing this did is probably buy it time so it's not pulled instantly from the lineup.
WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Resurrection (ABC)
