GOOD WEEK/BAD WEEK: March 30, 2013

GOOD WEEK: "THE VOICE" It's amazing how one show can change NBC so much. The Voice with two new coaches returned this week after NBC's disastrous winter and while all was not well across the network, Mondays 8-10pm and Tuesdays 8pm are looking a whole lot brighter. The Voice had an eye-popping 4.8 demo on Monday night, well above the languishing American Idol . It came back to Earth a little bit on Tuesday but it was still a stellar performer. It also catapulted lead-outs Revolution to decent numbers and Go On to its best number since it last followed The Voice . NBC needs more than The Voice to succeed and they can't overexpose it but it's amazing how it can bring viewers back to a network no one was watching very quickly. BAD WEEK: CBS NEWBIES CBS renewed a bunch of new shows this week and newcomer Elementary was among them. But other than that, it looks like no other freshman will be renewed on CBS. Made in Jersey, Partners, and The Job were cancelle...

RENEWAL ALERT: NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Elementary, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, The Good Wife, The Mentalist, The Amazing Race, Survivor, Undercover Boss, 60 Minutes, 48 Hours

Just like last March, CBS renewed a flurry of veteran shows at once, renewing 14 shows today that ranged from inevitable to borderline surprising. These renewals join the already renewed The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, How I Met Your Mother, and CSI . Filed under the "inevitable" list were scripted hits NCIS: Los Angeles for a fifth season, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods and Mike & Molly for a fourth season, and Person of Interest and 2 Broke Girls for a third season. Another non-surprise but worth mentioning renewal is Elementary , which looks like it will be CBS's ONLY renewal from this year's freshman class. Only one renewal hasn't happened in years for a network that thrives on consistency so CBS better hope next year's group is stronger to avoid their aging shows getting even older. Elementary isn't even a huge hit but it's been CBS's strongest new show by far. More surprising renewals came for The Good Wife for a fifth season and The Mentali...

GOOD WEEK/BAD WEEK: March 23, 2013

GOOD WEEK: ABC REALITY SHOWS ABC has had a surprising week with their reality shows. On Monday night, Dancing with the Stars returned up nicely from its disappointing fall numbers. Then on Tuesday, the new celebrity diving series Splash was a big surprise with a very solid 2.6 demo against NCIS and with Daylight Savings a factor. I thought there would be very little interest in this show but apparently I was wrong. Even on Thursday, the return of the non-celebrity Wife Swap did better in the 8pm hour than most Last Resort episodes and all Zero Hour episodes this year. Things may change this week when The Voice returns but it was a solid week for ABC's reality shows. BAD WEEK: "SMASH" If there's one show that symbolizes the way NBC's winter has gone, it is Smash . Filled with high expectations and a heavy ad campaign, Smash fell on its face with its winter premiere. It has continued to fall ever since reaching a 0.7 demo this week. It will be benched to Sat...

RENEWAL ALERT: CSI

CBS announced that they have renewed the long running drama CSI  for a 14th season. The renewal comes on the heels of series star Ted Danson signing on for another year. CSI has endured several changes in the past several years including the departures of William Petersen then Laurence Fishburne then Marg Helgenberger. It also endured a timeslot change to Wednesday two years ago but that has paid off as the 10pm Wednesday slot is less pressure than Thursday 9pm. This year, it has had some real strong ratings outings before getting bogged down in a duel with Chicago Fire in the Wednesday 10pm slot. CSI joins How I Met Your Mother and NCIS as the only official renewals for next year. With the cancellation of CSI: Miami last season and the likely cancellation of CSI: NY this year, it looks like the mothership will be the only CSI on the air for the first time since 2002-03. The show has been a long time success story for CBS but I have to think it only has a few more years at most...
