ABC was all new on Tuesday night and took a hit with a rising The Voice and new shows back on CBS. A Dancing with the Stars recap only did alright at 8pm but it was still a nice improvement over what No Ordinary Family or Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution got this season. ABC will run recaps in this hour through the rest of the season. At 9pm, the results edition of Dancing was down 2.2 million viewers and six tenths in the demo from last week's big results show but this is on par with what it got two weeks ago. At 10pm, Body of Proof felt the heat from CBS and NBC and was down 1.7 million viewers and two tenths in the demo for series lows and a third place finish in a time period it was winning just a few weeks ago. It's still been a solid upgrade in the timeslot for ABC and will no doubt get renewed.

CBS was all new on Tuesday night with down numbers from 8-10pm but surprising numbers at 10pm. At 8pm, NCIS was down 2 million viewers and two tenths in the demo from its last new airing three weeks ago for a season low in total viewers. At 9pm, NCIS: Los Angeles was down 1.3 million viewers and four tenths in the demo from its last new airing hitting easy season lows for the time period as it suffered against the double whammy of Dancing with the Stars and The Voice. At 10pm though, The Good Wife was up a surprising 1.3 million viewers and four tenths in the demo from its last new airing. These are its best numbers since October 26 and it makes you wonder if Parenthood and The Good Wife are hurting each other's audience as they both went up nicely in recent weeks that they weren't facing each other. This nice bump may seal a renewal for The Good Wife, which has been expected anyway.

NBC had great news on Tuesday night as it finally has a hit on its hands. But first at 8pm, The Biggest Loser was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. With the 9pm hour back next week, it should start climbing towards the finale. At 9pm, The Voice followed up last week's powerful debut by rising eight tenths in viewers and a big six tenths in the demo to a remarkable 5.7. This show clearly benefited from strong buzz and word-of-mouth and the result is the best news NBC has had in a long, long time. The 10pm hour was especially strong and it will remain there next week for a one hour episode. The 10pm hour on Tuesday night was the strongest across the networks in awhile.

Finally FOX was all new. At 8pm, Glee was up three tenths in viewers and the demo from last week's season lows. While the rise is good, it still seems past its peak. Of course that doesn't mean it's going away any time soon. At 9pm, Raising Hope was up two tenths in viewers but even in the demo. Did FOX pull the renewal trigger on this show too soon? It has been floundering this spring. At 9:30pm, Traffic Light was down two tenths in viewers and the demo from the last episode two weeks ago as it is a waste of a time period.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
