ABC had a solid first Monday of summer where anything over a 2 in the demo has to be considered decent. The Bachelorette was down 1.8 million viewers and six tenths in the demo from last week's season premiere which followed Dancing with the Stars. It should stay close to this level which is solid enough for the summer. ABC got decent premiere numbers from the new inspirational reality show Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, which bowed to a good 2.4 demo. ABC should have a strong Monday lineup this summer. CBS was in repeats with its regular lineup.

NBC was partly new on Monday. Following a repeat of Minute to Win It, the network premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent was on the board but not very strong. Still, for a show that already aired on USA, this is not a bad performance. At 10pm, Law & Order: LA was up seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. The viewer total is the best since before its long hiatus but that doesn't make a difference as the show was cancelled. FOX was in repeats with two episodes of House.

PILOT REVIEW: Extreme Makeover - Weight Loss Edition

EXTREME MAKEOVER: WEIGHT LOSS EDITION

Featuring: Chris Powell
Created by: JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Adam Greener

Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition is a new summer show from ABC in the Extreme Makeover family. First, there was the original Extreme Makeover which made ugly ducklings into the beautiful swans. The more popular (and still running) Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has rebuilt or built homes for families in need. Now, we have the Weight Loss version which captures the same inspirational spirit as Home Edition. In the Ty Pennington role is personal trainer Chris Powell who rose to fame on The Oprah Winfrey Show when he helped a man lose 401 pounds in 26 months.

The pilot episode focused on Rachel, an elementary gym teacher and overachiever who has struggled badly with her weight. She was a likable person who was easy to root for as is often the case with this shows. Chris Powell definitely pushes them but is compassionate and understanding which is necessary. Of course, there has to be some drama and bumps along the way and that comes in the form of her family, who want to be supportive but don't always know how to be. It gets worse when her weight loss slows, upsetting Chris. The process included surgery to rid herself of the leftover fat after she lost weight. Not surprisingly, the transformation by the end was pretty incredible as Rachel lost 161 pounds.

This show is everything you would expect it to be and that should tell you if it's a show you'll be interested in. It's The Biggest Loser meets Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The stories are inspirational if a tad sappy and the results are pretty extraordinary. Chris Powell is likable as the trainer and he does a good job. It's a reality summer show so that's about all you can ask for in that genre.

All the networks were in repeats on the first official night of summer programming except for FOX which had a strong debut with So You Think You Can Dance. Against very little competition, FOX's regular summer series was up from last year's premiere. It should continue to be a reality tentpole of the summer along with NBC's America's Got Talent and CBS's Big Brother. Other than that, not much to report with CBS's The Big Bang Theory garnering the best repeat numbers.

Viewers: 29.3 million, 18-49 demo: 9.2

The 2010-2011 TV season came to a close on Wednesday night and ABC was mostly all new with season finales. At 8pm, The Middle was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week but it was facing the American Idol finale so that's not bad at all. It will probably be able to perk back up some in the fall. After a repeat of Modern Family, the season finale aired at 9pm and was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo from last week. This is a great showing against the juggernaut that was Idol. At 9:30pm, a one hour Cougar Town season finale aired and was down two tenths in viewers, tying a season low, and even in the demo. This wasn't a great showing but it was against the final half hour of Idol. Finally at 10:30pm, the season finale of Happy Endings was up from both the 10pm & 10:30pm episodes last week which is good news. Also a 1.7 demo at 10:30pm is the best 10:30 showing for this sitcom so far. How will it do with a Modern Family lead-in in the fall?

CBS was in repeats from 8-10pm. At 10pm, the series finale of the cancelled Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior was down 1.2 million viewers and two tenths in the demo for series lows. This was a rare misstep in CBS's successful franchising of crime dramas and, with all the dramas in the arsenal, didn't need to come back next season. NBC aired repeats of Minute to Win It from 8-10pm to miniscule ratings. At 10pm, Law & Order: LA aired on a special night and was actually slightly above its usual Monday showing. It doesn't matter though as this cancelled drama is just finishing out its run.

FOX aired the season finale of American Idol that crowned Scotty McCreery the winner. It delivered a mammoth number and was up a strong 5.1 million viewers and a full demo point from last season's finale. It also had a ridiculous 38 million viewers watching the final half hour. In a season where everyone thought American Idol would continue its slow but steady fading, it came back with a vengeance and the franchise feels somewhat refreshed. That is quite an accomplishment and a great end to the TV season for the top demo network.

SEASON IN REVIEW: Unscripted and Other Honors

The 2010-2011 season is officially over. Over the last two days, I looked at the best (and worst!) in new comedies and dramas and today I will give a few other miscellaneous awards. Enjoy!

BEST UNSCRIPTED SERIES
The Voice (NBC) - NBC's newest addition to the entertainment competitions has brought a new twist on a frequently used format. For the audition rounds, it was a "blind" audition as the coaches had their backs to the contestants. It's too bad that only lasted two weeks though because it was so enjoyable and interesting. The battle rounds have been fun too and the coaches are top notch. This show feels fresh and new and has been a much needed hit for NBC. It's well deserved and when they iron out the kinks for season 2 next winter, it could be a real force to be reckoned with.

Runners-Up
Million Dollar Money Drop (FOX) - FOX's new game show where contestants start with a million dollars and then slowly lose it wasn't anything special but it was a guilty pleasure. It had high drama and a mix of contestants to root for and annoying contestants to root against. It was a typical game show but it was fun.
Live to Dance (CBS) - Paula Abdul's failed dance show finished as a runner-up due to the lack of better competition. Some of the performers were quite good but that's about it as it was too produced to feel real and earnest.

BEST UNSCRIPTED PERSONALITY
Adam Levine, The Voice (NBC) - The Voice has a great slate of coaches but Maroon 5's Adam Levine is the best of the bunch. His coaching is good, his advice is solid and educated, and he's quite funny. You can tell that he actually cares a whole lot about what he's doing and it's nice to see a rock star putting in the effort which didn't always happen with Steven Tyler on American Idol this season.

Runners-Up
Christina Aguilera, The Voice (NBC) - Another great addition to the voice was pop diva Christina Aguilera. She had gone through a rough winter while flubbing the Super Bowl's national anthem, falling at the Grammys, and an arrest. But she has worked her way back into the public's favor by doing a great job as an excited and sweet coach on The Voice.
Cee Lo Green, The Voice (NBC) - Yes, another coach from The Voice is here and honestly the fourth judge Blake Shelton wasn't far behind. Cee Lo is eccentric in many ways but he fits perfectly with the great coaching panel and, like the others, gives sound advice to the talented singers.

BEST RETURNING SERIES
Parks and Recreation (NBC) - There weren't many great new comedies but there were many great returning comedies. But this one was without a doubt the most consistent in quality and humor this season. The residents of Pawnee, Indiana have become a welcome group on my TV each and every week. Every single cast member of this ensemble is solid and the additions of Adam Scott and especially Rob Lowe have only made them stronger. More people should watch this great great show.

Runners-Up
Modern Family (ABC) - How could a comedy top its freshman season where it won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series? By delivering an even-better second season. The cast jelled from the pilot but jelled even more this season. This show has many more great years ahead of it and many more stories to tell.
The Middle (ABC) - ABC's other Wednesday family sitcom is sadly underrated because it is such a quality show. The situations are so simple and yet so relatable. The cast is top notch and the show seemed to tighten some loose screws in its second season. I can't wait to see what happens next.

BEST THEME SONG FOR A NEW SERIES
Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) - Okay so this may be cheating a bit but CBS's intense reboot of the classic 1970s series also gave an intense reboot to the theme song. It wouldn't be Hawaii Five-0 without the classic theme song and the new version didn't disappoint. I didn't watch the show every week but when I did, I kept wishing the show lived up to the excitement of the music.

Runners-Up
Better With You (ABC) - It would be nice to see more sitcoms use classic-style theme songs like this one did. It was able to have a nice little song with each cast member given a billing. It is a huge travesty that most shows bypass a full theme song, I'm glad this one didn't.
Blue Bloods (CBS) - CBS's new cop drama has a song that fits the show perfectly. I can't really explain it, it just fits. Watch an episode and listen to the theme song, you'll see what I mean.

RATINGS RECAP: 5/24/11

Viewers: 10.4 million, 18-49 demo: 2.1

8:00 American Idol
Viewers: 20.6 million, 18-49 demo: 6.4
9:00 Glee
Viewers: 11.8 million, 18-49 demo: 4.6

ABC was all Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday night. A repeat of the previous night's performance show drew over 10 million viewers which is great for a next-night repeat. The two hour finale at 9pm that crowned Hines Ward the champion was up 3.3 million viewers and 1.1 in the demo from last week's results. This is still a great result but significantly lower than last fall as competition from The Voice and Glee surely didn't help. CBS was in repeats and saw decent numbers considering they were repeats and the competition on all three networks was fierce.

NBC started with the finale of The Biggest Loser: Couples. It was up a million viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week but way below last fall's finale. This reality franchise is showing signs of age and NBC might have been wise to reduce it to an hour next fall. Maybe they will in the spring. At 10pm, The Voice was down 1.5 million viewers and seven tenths in the demo for series lows but it did hold its own in the demo against Dancing with the Stars. It may be able to perk back up next week with less competition and a lead-in from America's Got Talent.

FOX started with the performance show of American Idol which dominated at 8pm but was below average. This could be partially due to the fact that it has aired on Wednesday not Tuesday all season. At 9pm, Glee aired at a special time and was up 2.8 million viewers and a full demo point for its best numbers since March 8. How will the show fare when it returns next fall? Will it continue to show the erosion it experienced this spring?

SEASON IN REVIEW: Dramas

Here is my rundown on the best of the new dramas this year. I'm saying a sad goodbye to a few of my favorites.

BEST NEW DRAMA SERIES
Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) - Hands down my favorite new show of the 2010-2011 season and my favorite drama on the air this year, I'm so sad that it won't be returning even though the ratings didn't warrant it. Detroit 1-8-7 was a gritty classic cop drama set in a city with so many stories to tell. The show was raw and real, the cases were heartbreaking and interesting, the ensemble cast was stellar. Everything about this show was good TV. It wasn't as flashy as some crime dramas on the air but it didn't need to be and it had the perfect mix of intertwining the case or two of the week with the personal lives of the characters. For quality alone, it deserved a second season.

Runners-Up
The Event (NBC) - There are certainly flaws in this high concept sci-fi/political thriller but it was captivating nonetheless. The show had bumps along the way, it veered off course sometimes and stretched the limits of believability even in a genre like this. But it was still interesting - it had so many twists and turns and some characters really showed some growth through the series. I didn't always think it was exceptional quality but I certainly couldn't stop watching. It had a cliffhanger ending that made me sort of wish there was a season 2.
Lone Star (FOX) - It's hard to even remember this great new drama about a two-timing con man which was cancelled after its second episode on September 27. But what promise it had. With a plot unlike anything on network TV and an excellent production level, this had a chance to be an award-winning drama. But it debuted to terrible ratings and FOX gave it a quick hook. What a shame because it could have been something special. And it would be great to see those remaining four episodes.

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A NEW DRAMA
Michael Imperioli, Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) - As Detective Louis Fitch, Michael Imperioli created the most dynamic and interesting character in the 2010-2011 season. Fitch was a whiz in the questioning room and pretty tough on the beat but he had a personal life and past life that led a lot to be desired. From his antagonistic yet caring relationship with his rookie partner to his embarrassment about anything personal, he was a deeply complex character that the writers only scratched the surface with. Detroit 1-8-7 was a magnificent show and he was the best part of it.

Runners-Up
James Wolk, Lone Star (FOX) - It would be great to see where this character would have gone but as Bob Allen in the sadly short-lived drama, James Wolk was perfect. He was the perfect mix of charm and deception. He also was great showing the deep conflict in the life he had always known. This character really could have gone somewhere had FOX given it the chance.
Blair Underwood, The Event (FOX) - As President of the United States Elias Martinez, Blair Underwood was a perfect fit for the role. In the age of Obama, Underwood resembled him in many ways other than skin color. He was always a character I wished we had seen more in this large ensemble, but his role was pivotal in the story.

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A NEW DRAMA
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law (NBC) - NBC's midseason legal drama was uneven throughout its 12 episode run but there was one constant through it all and that was Kathy Bates in the lead role as Harriet Korn. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that she is the reason it worked and the reason it's coming back for a second season. The times the show was weak was when she wasn't on screen. She was a commanding presence in every scene she was in, particularly in the courtroom. This drama has promise so hopefully the writers can work some things out so the weight doesn't fall completely on Bates' shoulders for the second season. Not that she's not up to the challenge.

Runners-Up
Laura Innes, The Event (NBC) - One of the most interesting characters in a complex web of characters on this show was Laura Innes' Sofia. As the leader of the terrestrials, she was originally an ally to the US, then an outcast among her own people, and then a powerful enemy to Earth. Sometimes the situations were absurd but Laura Innes gave a leveled performance that helped carry even the most ridiculous plot twists.
Kelli Giddish, Chase (NBC) - I had to find a place to give some love to an underrated drama from the season - the action show Chase about US Marshals. As US Marshal Annie Frost, Giddish did not win me over initially but she got better and better as the season went on and her character got some depth. She was tough as nails but occasionally let her guard down. This show really showed improvement over the season and could have worked great on CBS with all their procedurals.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A NEW DRAMA
Zeljko Ivanek, The Event (NBC) - As the steely eyed Director of National Intelligence Blake Sterling, Zeljko Ivanek's character underwent some of the more dramatic changes in this complex series. Originally a somewhat suspicious member of the president's team, he turned into one of the most heroic and a true ally to the good side's cause. He rarely showed flashes of high emotion but his serious demeanor and toughness won me over during the course of the season. I wasn't a fan of his early on but I was rooting for him by the end.

Runners-Up
James McDaniel, Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) - As the veteran Sgt. Jesse Longford, cop show veteran James McDaniel was a pivotal piece of this excellent ensemble. He was tortured about his decision to retire and still had all his wits about him out on the job even though he was a little slower when chasing down the bad guys. He had a great relationship with his partner too. He was someone to root for.
Christopher McDonald, Harry's Law (NBC) - As the bombastic and egotistical attorney Tommy Jefferson, Christopher McDonald was the best part of Harry's Law this side of Kathy Bates. He was quite an oddball but yet somehow endearing and he had great chemistry with Kathy Bates. Let's hope he becomes a more regular character next season.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A NEW DRAMA
Taylor Cole, The Event (NBC) - Taylor Cole's Vicky Roberts probably went under the biggest transformation over the course of the season on The Event. She was originally half of a mysterious couple then a ruthless assassin and finally a confidante and the most valuable assistant to the show's protagonist Sean Walker (Jason Ritter). She had a back story that made her more understandable as she changed her ways when her family was threatened. Plus she was tough as nails and beautiful at the same time.

Runners-Up
Aisha Hinds, Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) - As Detective Arianna Sanchez, a young hispanic cop from Detroit, Aisha Hinds was one of the many great members of this ensemble. She was tough on criminals and didn't take any crap from them yet she had a very vulnerable side seen in her relationship with Det. John Stone (DJ Cotrona) and her subsequent grieving over his death. I felt like we were just being to go deeper with her character and it's one of many reasons I wish the show was coming back.
Jeri Ryan, Body of Proof (ABC) - I wanted to give a little love to Body of Proof which was a good but not great addition to the drama lineup this season. As Dr. Kate Murphy, the boss of Dana Delany's main character, Jeri Ryan shows strong leadership. Her character hasn't been seen a ton but she seems like an interesting player who will hopefully be touched on more next season.

WORST NEW DRAMA SERIES
My Generation (ABC) - What can be said about the worst new show of the 2010-2011 season. ABC's documentary stinker was cancelled after two episodes which was two episodes too many. It took an interesting premise (revisiting high school classmates after ten years) and made it cliched, fakey, and terrible. There wasn't one thing to like in this show which tried too hard and completely squandered its intrigue. What a mess. I ripped this show apart in my initial review so look back there if you want to read more.

Runners-Up
Outlaw (NBC) - Poor Jimmy Smits. He was a bright spot on a very weak show. With an outlandish premise and lame courtroom drama, Outlaw was doomed from the start for many reasons. It was banished to a sleepy Friday timeslot and forgotten quickly. Sometimes when a premise seems too absurd (a Supreme Court justice giving up his chair to "change the Court"), the show just shouldn't be made.
The Cape (NBC) - NBC's comic book show just wasn't for me at all and I really can't comment on it as a comparison to other shows like it because I don't watch them. It was just too campy and not interesting enough to make up for the camp factor. Not for me and judging by the ratings, not for many.

ABC had a solid Monday night with the last performance show of Dancing with the Stars. It was up nine tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from the last airing. These numbers are just slightly below the final performance show from last fall as the reality franchise shows no sign of slowing. At 9pm was the season premiere of perennial summer show The Bachelorette. It premiered almost dead even with last summer's premiere and should be a solid summer player as always. CBS was in repeats with solid results from 9-10pm. They aired a special at 10pm to limited interest, but it was probably a little above what a Hawaii Five-0 repeat would have done.

NBC was all new starting with a new Minute to Win It which was slightly above the numbers it gets on Monday. This seems to be NBC's go-to filler. At 9pm was the series finale of The Event as the show has been cancelled. It was up eight tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. This is the best demo performance since its fall finale way back in November before its long hiatus. This show had a tremendous fall from its summer hype and big premiere which is why it's not coming back. At 10pm, Law & Order: LA was up eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week. It is also cancelled but will finish out its run through June.

FOX started things off with the season finale of House which was up a tenth in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. It's surprising to see it drop for the season finale as it has risen big in the past. Maybe it's a good thing it's moving to 9pm next fall because it's starting to fall apart at 8pm. Still a 3.4 isn't too bad for such a veteran show. At 9pm, the series finale of The Chicago Code was up 1.2 million viewers and two tenths in the demo for its best showing since early March. Some thought this deserved a second chance but that won't be the case.

ABC was all new on Sunday night starting with the season finale of America's Funniest Home Videos which was down nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week. This show may never disappear. At 8pm, the return of the Billboard Music Awards delivered decent ratings and skewed very young. For an award show that's been absent a few years, these numbers are probably acceptable enough to bring it back next year.

CBS started with two 60 Minutes editions that both basically did the same number. The 7pm edition was 1.8 million viewers and a tenth in the demo below last week's episode. At 9pm, they aired another Jesse Stone movie starring Tom Selleck. As usual, the total viewer number was decent but the demo skewed incredibly old - about as old a skew as we see on TV. Still, to get nearly 14 million viewers with a Sunday night movie in late May is not too bad and CBS had to know the demo would be terrible.

NBC started things off with Dateline NBC which was up nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo from last week. A special Minute to Win It at 8pm was barely on the map as usual for this show which is barely qualifying as adequate filler anymore. The season finale of Celebrity Apprentice aired at 9pm and was up 1.8 million viewers and half a demo point but below last year's finale. Considering it was regularly getting numbers like this a few weeks ago, it could have been higher.

FOX was full of season finales on Sunday night following a repeat of The Simpsons. At 7:30pm, American Dad! was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week but it did top the hour in the demo. At 8pm, The Simpsons was down seven tenths in viewers and even in the demo from last week as the veteran cartoon has slipped this spring. At 8:30pm, Bob's Burgers was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week. Did this show really deserve to come back? Finally at 9pm, the season finale of Family Guy was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo but had the night's best demo. FOX's cartoon lineup should be stronger in the fall assuming there is football.

SEASON IN REVIEW: Comedies

This week, I am looking back at the 2010-2011 season, mostly focusing on new shows as that has been my focus all season. Today I will look at comedies, tomorrow I will look at dramas, and Wednesday (the final day of the season), I will look at unscripted shows and miscellaneous honors.

BEST NEW COMEDY SERIES
Mike & Molly (CBS) - It wasn't a great year for comedies. After the breakout success of Modern Family and Glee in 2009-2010, this year's comedies were somewhat underwhelming but Mike & Molly was the most consistent of an inconsistent bunch. With a winning cast and a nice twist on the romantic comedy premise (an overweight couple), Mike & Molly was at its best when it focused on Mike and Molly themselves. Being a Chuck Lorre show, it veered into crassness too often but the sweetness of the two lead characters led me to keep coming back each week. They did a good job exploring the relationship and early pratfalls of dating and now they will take things one step further next season as Mike and Molly are engaged. I'm glad it's coming back for more.

Runners-Up
Mad Love (CBS) - This show had a strong cast who made the best out of mediocre material. The romantic comedy took awhile to find its voice but it was getting it towards the end of the season. Of course, its cancellation means we won't be able to see more of it which is too bad because I think it was on its way to being a nice ensemble comedy.

Better With You (ABC) - This show was enjoyable but nothing to write home about. Much like Mad Love, the decent cast elevated mediocre material at times to make for a promising show but it never really came all together.

BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A NEW COMEDY
Billy Gardell, Mike & Molly (CBS) - As I already mentioned, Mike & Molly was a standout because of its two standout leads. As overweight cop Mike, Billy Gardell had a nice mix of sarcasm and sweetness. He played Mike as a vulnerable boyfriend who hadn't really ever been with someone he truly cared about before. He had good interactions with the whole cast - his friend Carl, his mother, and most of all Molly. They cast this show well because Gardell has good comedic timing and a natural chemistry with Melissa McCarthy's Molly.

Runners-Up
Tyler Labine, Mad Love (CBS) - Occasionally annoying but usually enjoyable, Tyler Labine's Larry was over the top but that was needed in this occasionally mundane romantic comedy. His complicated relationship with Judy Greer's Connie was the best part of the series.
Christian Slater, Breaking In (FOX) - As the bizarre and mysterious Oz, Christian Slater was the best part of a ho-hum show. Supremely confident and always a step ahead of his staff, he was an interesting character.

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A NEW COMEDY
Allison Janney, Mr. Sunshine (ABC) - Mr. Sunshine was one of the season's biggest disappointments given the pedigree of the people on and off screen. But the clear standout was Allison Janney as the wacky Crystal Cohen. She was a privileged, inconsiderate wacko who forced her staff to do things based on a whim in her screwball head. After becoming famous as the levelheaded CJ on The West Wing, Janney went all out for this role and embraced the silliness and wackiness with gusto and flair. If only the show and the rest of the cast was a strong and committed to their roles as Janney, the show might have been a hit. She had a great character and made her much stronger.

Runners-Up
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly (CBS) - As the sweet fourth grade teacher Molly in Mike & Molly, McCarthy had instant chemistry with Billy Gardell's Mike. She also had great deadpan disgust with her sister's latest antics or her mother's gross boyfriend.
Judy Greer, Mad Love (CBS) - Mad Love started out being about Ben and Kate (Jason Biggs and Sarah Chalke), but after a few episodes it was clear than Tyler Labine and Judy Greer were the standouts. As the insecure and cynical Connie, Greer was the perfect mix of wit and vulnerability. It would have been fun to have seen where Labine and Greer's characters went next season had it been renewed.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A NEW COMEDY
Reno Wilson, Mike & Molly (CBS) - Every good comedy needs a wisecracking sidekick and Mike & Molly certainly had one in Reno Wilson's Carl. He was Mike's best friend but the two sometimes bickered like an old married couple. He was fast talking but often put in place by his hilarious grandmother. He's a good second banana.

Runners-Up
Jake Lacy, Better With You (ABC) - Jake Lacy's Casey was somewhat annoying and childish early on in this series but became one of the better ones on this show by the end. He was innocent yet thoughtful and had strong interactions with the rest of the cast.
Nate Torrence, Mr. Sunshine (ABC) - Aside from Janney, Nate Torrence's Roman was the best part of a weak show. He was wide-eyed and innocent and relentlessly eager to please, which was very needed on a cynical show.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A NEW COMEDY
Debra Jo Rupp, Better With You (ABC) - The best character in an uneven show, Debra Jo Rupp was often a hoot as the boozy, snarky mother Vicky. From her subtle disdain for Ben and Mia's choice to not get married or have a baby to her tired yet comfortable relationship with her husband of 35 years, she often had the best lines or at least delivered them the best. Too bad the show didn't focus more on her and her husband Joel (Kurt Fuller).

Runners-Up
Cleo King, Mike & Molly (ABC) - Cleo King stole every scene she was in on Mike & Molly as Carl's sassy grandmother. Always speaking her mind, she would regularly put down her grandson with great lines and great delivery. Let's hope we see more of her next year.
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope (FOX) - I didn't see much of Raising Hope this year but when I did, Martha Plimpton was the best part of it as the trailer trash mother Virginia. The show is bizarre but she commits to her role which is needed in a show like this.

WORST NEW COMEDY SERIES
Perfect Couples (NBC) - The 2010-2011 season was full of comedies about a group of friends at different points in their relationships from Traffic Light to Happy Endings. But this one was the real stinker of them. It tried so hard and failed so badly. Not one member of the cast was enjoyable and the show tried way too hard. These shows just don't work at all, they're not relatable to audiences because they're so fakey. Goodbye and Good Riddance.

Runners-Up
The Paul Reiser Show (NBC) - I really wanted to like this show because I really liked Reiser on Mad About You but it was just a mess. I don't know if Reiser's gotten less funny over the years or what, but the humor felt so stale and forced. The premise was weak too as Reiser belonged in a more traditional sitcom than a show that felt like the ugly stepsister of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Running Wilde (FOX) - Despite using many people on and off screen from the excellent Arrested Development, this show just did not work at all. Will Arnett's character was so unlikable it was hard to root for him and Keri Russell was very disappointing as the straight woman to Arnett's excesses. This show had a messy premise and carried it out poorly.

ABC started things off with a repeat of Shark Tank, which was not too far below an original installment of the show. Its ratings might rise in the fall when it moves to 9pm. At 9pm, the season finale of Primetime: What Would You Do? was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. This show doesn't have a place on the fall schedule but still could be used as a filler. It did not do nearly as well this season as last. At 10pm, 20/20 was up 1.3 million viewers and three tenths in the demo. CBS started things off with Flashpoint which was down a rough nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo. This is basically filler but it hasn't done nearly as well this season so far. Will A Gifted Man be able to get off the ground in this slot in the fall? A repeat of CSI: NY was respectable at 9pm while a new 48 Hours Mystery on a special night didn't do much at 10pm.

NBC was all new starting with Friday Night Lights which was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week. At 9pm, Dateline NBC was down four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo from last week as viewers opted for 20/20 this week. Both shows will occupy just the 10pm hour to start next fall. FOX started off with the season finale of Kitchen Nightmares which was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week, easily winning the hour in the demo. A repeat of Kitchen Nightmares followed.

Viewers: 9.8 million, 18-49 demo: 3.2

ABC was all new with finales of its regular lineup. The spring finale of Wipeout was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo as it will be back for a summer run soon. It collapsed against American Idol and maybe is better off as just a summer show. At 9pm, the season finale of Grey's Anatomy was up three tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo. The rise is nice but it's still well below last year's season finale. At 10pm, the season finale of Private Practice was up two tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for its best numbers since March. The 9-11pm portion of this lineup will stay in tact next fall.

CBS also had a night of season finales. At 8pm, The Big Bang Theory was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo. While it was down a lot from the fall, it still held its own against American Idol this spring. At 8:30pm, the season finale of Rules of Engagement was up six tenths in viewers and even in the demo. It will be on the move to Saturdays next fall, can it survive? A two hour season finale of The Mentalist was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo from last week's 10pm hour. It was very strong in the 10pm slot though which proves it was a smart thing to leave it at 10pm next year. Despite these strong numbers, it was fourth in the demo at 9pm which might spell trouble for the new Person of Interest in the fall.

NBC was new from 9-11pm after two repeats of The Office. A one hour season finale of The Office with a ton of cameo guest stars was up eight tenths in viewers and six tenths in the demo, winning the hour in the latter category. That's not surprising, but how will the show do next fall without Steve Carell? And who will be the new boss at Dunder Mifflin? A new Parks and Recreation followed at 10pm and was up eight tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo from last week's 10pm episode. The season finale followed at 10:30 and was lower but a 2.0 demo at 10:30pm is not bad for a comedy. The show will slide back to its old timeslot of 8:30pm next fall.

FOX was all new with its regular lineup. The results show at 8pm which set up the finals between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's results show, which is somewhat surprising. At 9pm, the season finale of Bones was down seven tenths in viewers and even in the demo, finishing third in both categories. Next week, American Idol will air on Tuesday and Wednesday to close out the season.

ABC was mostly all new on Wednesday night and had mixed results with its comedies. At 8pm, The Middle was up four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for its best demo performance since February 23. It has rebounded nicely since dropping to around 6 million viewers and a 1.8 demo a few weeks ago. After a repeat of The Middle did decently, Modern Family was up a tenth in viewers but down two tenths in the demo. Cougar Town followed and was down eight tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo, tying a season low in the demo. Back to back Happy Endings followed and were both down. The 10:00 episode was down half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo from its counterpart last week while the 10:30 episode was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week. ABC is desperately trying to make this show a hit and they will give it the post-Modern Family slot next fall. While I don't blame them for trying, I'm not sure this show is ever going to break out.

CBS started things off with a repeat of Criminal Minds at 8pm. It was followed by the season finale of the show which was down half a million viewers but even in the demo with last week. This show continues to hold its own against stiff competition. But its now cancelled spinoff did not impress as it was down eight tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, hitting series lows and earning its cancellation. It will air one final episode next week.

NBC was MIA as usual from 8-10pm with low rated airings of Minute to Win It. A new episode at 8pm was up four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo, but that's not saying much. The season finale of Law & Order: SVU perked things up at 10pm though as the show was up nine tenths in viewers and a strong half demo point for its best performance since January 5. It won the demo as usual but also won the total viewer crown for the hour. FOX aired a two hour edition of American Idol with the Top 3. It was up half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo.

9:00 Raising Hope
Viewers: 5.4 million, 18-49 demo: 2.2
9:30 Breaking In
Viewers: 3.2 million, 18-49 demo: 1.3

ABC continued to be strong on Tuesday night with two hours of Dancing with the Stars material. A special at 8pm was above last week's recap show. At 9pm, the results edition which set up the finals was up six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week. Next week's finale will be big as usual. At 10pm, the season finale of Body of Proof was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo with last week. While it was still a decent showing, it was third in the demo. ABC will continue to have the results lead into Proof next fall to prop up this young drama.

CBS was all new with season finales of its three dramas. At 8pm, NCIS was up a million viewers and half a demo point, easily beating Glee in both categories and posting its best demo numbers since February 22. Eight seasons in and this show remains one of the biggest hits on TV. At 9pm, NCIS: Los Angeles was up nine tenths in viewers and half a demo point from last week. CBS will keep the NCIS franchises back to back next fall. At 10pm, The Good Wife was up nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo, winning the total viewer number and taking second in the demo in a tough hour. It will be on the move to Sunday nights next fall and it will be interesting to see how it does.

NBC remained competitive thanks to The Voice. At 8pm, The Biggest Loser was up two tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for its best demo numbers since March 22 as it set up the season finale for next week. At 10pm, The Voice was down half a million viewers and two tenths for its lowest showing yet but it still remained incredibly young skewing. It may pop back up when the competition lessens next week but a 4.5 demo in the 10pm hour is still really strong.
FOX was all new on Tuesday night as well. At 8pm, Glee was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week as it is already not the powerhouse it was in the fall. Still, it will be asked to be the Tuesday anchor for FOX. At 9pm, the season finale of Raising Hope was up three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo, posting its best numbers since March 15. Finally, any lingering hope to the online speculation that Breaking In might get a second chance was likely squandered with a terrible showing outside of its cushy post-American Idol timeslot. Now the cancellation will surely stay that way.

ABC was all new and dominant on Monday night. At 8pm, Dancing with the Stars was up 1.3 million viewers and four tenths in the demo as it builds towards the finale. Next week of course is the big season finale. At 10pm, the season finale of Castle was up three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for season highs in both categories. This show is a bonafide hit for ABC when it has Dancing with the Stars as a lead-in. And it will continue to next year as this lineup will stay in tact.

CBS had a night of season finales and saw numbers go up across the board. At 8pm, How I Met Your Mother was up eight tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. The demo is the best since February 28 but it will probably perk back up in the fall. At 8:30pm, the series finale of the cancelled Mad Love was up six tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. After a Two and a Half Men repeat, the season finale of Mike & Molly was up a million viewers and three tenths in the demo, rebounding nicely from last week for the finale as it will stay in this slot next fall. At 10pm, Hawaii Five-0 was up a million viewers and four tenths in the demo for the season finale. All in all, these were nice rebounds for season finales.

NBC saw the demo drop as the night went on with its trio of problem dramas - two of which were cancelled and one which will move to Friday. At 8pm, the season finale of Chuck was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo for its best numbers since March 14. It will be on Fridays next year, paired with the supernatural Grimm. At 9pm, The Event was up two tenths in viewers and the demo as its series finale next week will hopefully given some closure to the serial storyline. At 10pm, Law & Order: LA was down seven tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo despite the lead-in being up as it continued to earn its cancellation.

FOX some numbers go up as well on Monday night even with the finales of its dramas still a week away. At 8pm, House was up a nice million viewers and half a demo point. The demo is the best since March 14 and the show will slide to 9pm next fall to make way for Terra Nova. At 9pm, the cancelled The Chicago Code was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. It was somewhat consistent this spring but not good enough for FOX which did not have a lot of space on its schedule.
