PILOT REVIEW: Extreme Makeover - Weight Loss Edition

EXTREME MAKEOVER: WEIGHT LOSS EDITION Featuring: Chris Powell Created by: JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Adam Greener Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition is a new summer show from ABC in the Extreme Makeover family. First, there was the original Extreme Makeover which made ugly ducklings into the beautiful swans. The more popular (and still running) Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has rebuilt or built homes for families in need. Now, we have the Weight Loss version which captures the same inspirational spirit as Home Edition . In the Ty Pennington role is personal trainer Chris Powell who rose to fame on The Oprah Winfrey Show when he helped a man lose 401 pounds in 26 months. The pilot episode focused on Rachel, an elementary gym teacher and overachiever who has struggled badly with her weight. She was a likable person who was easy to root for as is often the case with this shows. Chris Powell definitely pushes them but is compassionate and understanding which is necessary....

SEASON IN REVIEW: Unscripted and Other Honors

The 2010-2011 season is officially over. Over the last two days, I looked at the best (and worst!) in new comedies and dramas and today I will give a few other miscellaneous awards. Enjoy! BEST UNSCRIPTED SERIES The Voice (NBC) - NBC's newest addition to the entertainment competitions has brought a new twist on a frequently used format. For the audition rounds, it was a "blind" audition as the coaches had their backs to the contestants. It's too bad that only lasted two weeks though because it was so enjoyable and interesting. The battle rounds have been fun too and the coaches are top notch. This show feels fresh and new and has been a much needed hit for NBC. It's well deserved and when they iron out the kinks for season 2 next winter, it could be a real force to be reckoned with. Runners-Up Million Dollar Money Drop (FOX) - FOX's new game show where contestants start with a million dollars and then slowly lose it wasn't anything special but it was...

A repeat of the previous night's performance show drew over 10 million viewers which is great for a next-night repeat. The two hour finale at 9pm that crowned Hines Ward the champion was up 3.3 million viewers and 1.1 in the demo from last week's results. This is still a great result but significantly lower than last fall as competition...

SEASON IN REVIEW: Dramas

Here is my rundown on the best of the new dramas this year. I'm saying a sad goodbye to a few of my favorites. BEST NEW DRAMA SERIES Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) - Hands down my favorite new show of the 2010-2011 season and my favorite drama on the air this year, I'm so sad that it won't be returning even though the ratings didn't warrant it. Detroit 1-8-7 was a gritty classic cop drama set in a city with so many stories to tell. The show was raw and real, the cases were heartbreaking and interesting, the ensemble cast was stellar. Everything about this show was good TV. It wasn't as flashy as some crime dramas on the air but it didn't need to be and it had the perfect mix of intertwining the case or two of the week with the personal lives of the characters. For quality alone, it deserved a second season. Runners-Up The Event (NBC) - There are certainly flaws in this high concept sci-fi/political thriller but it was captivating nonetheless. The show had bumps al...

SEASON IN REVIEW: Comedies

This week, I am looking back at the 2010-2011 season, mostly focusing on new shows as that has been my focus all season. Today I will look at comedies, tomorrow I will look at dramas, and Wednesday (the final day of the season), I will look at unscripted shows and miscellaneous honors. BEST NEW COMEDY SERIES Mike & Molly (CBS) - It wasn't a great year for comedies. After the breakout success of Modern Family and Glee in 2009-2010, this year's comedies were somewhat underwhelming but Mike & Molly was the most consistent of an inconsistent bunch. With a winning cast and a nice twist on the romantic comedy premise (an overweight couple), Mike & Molly was at its best when it focused on Mike and Molly themselves. Being a Chuck Lorre show, it veered into crassness too often but the sweetness of the two lead characters led me to keep coming back each week. They did a good job exploring the relationship and early pratfalls of dating and now they will take things one ste...
