Today's award is Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series!
This year's nominees are...
KRISTEN BELL as Joanne in Nobody Wants This (Netflix)
HANNAH EINBINDER as Ava Daniels in Hacks (Max)
BRIDGET EVERETT as Sam in Somebody Somewhere (HBO)
TINA FEY as Kate in The Four Seasons (Netflix)
NATASHA LYONNE as Charlie Cale in Poker Face (Peacock)
EDI PATTERSON as Judy Gemstone in The Righteous Gemstones (HBO)
JEAN SMART as Deborah Vance in Hacks (Max)
And the Winner Is...
HANNAH EINBINDER
Hacks (Max)
I never thought this day would come: where Hannah Einbinder would topple her legendary co-star Jean Smart for this award. But Season 4 was Hannah's year. Years of acting alongside Smart has turned Einbinder from a raw talent to a polished actress and she just had the better season this time around, which is no slight to Smart. Einbinder has really found her comic voice in her years being on Hacks. Ava has become more than just a millennial stereotype, she has become a fully formed character. Ava can now go head to head with Deborah Vance in the same way Einbinder can now go head to head with Smart. Her meltdown in the sixth episode of the season was one of the best moments on TV in the past year.
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
There are a lot of comedy greats in this category. Of course it starts with Jean Smart, who was excellent as always. It's almost easy to take her role of a lifetime performance for granted at this point. Although I haven't loved the second season of Poker Face as much as the first, Natasha Lyonne remains a wonderful center to that show. Bridget Everett brought so much heart and realism to Somebody Somewhere and I hope she has more great things to do soon. Edi Patterson rivals Matt Berry for the best line readings in recent memory with her iconic and underrated performance as Judy Gemstone. Kristen Bell was so likable and fun in Nobody Wants This and, as mentioned in Lead Actor, had excellent chemistry with Adam Brody. Finally, I really enjoyed the more subtle and less joke machine version of Tina Fey on The Four Seasons.
Tomorrow: Outstanding Limited/Anthology Series!
