NEIL GOLDMAN, Shrinking "The Drugs Don't Work" (Apple TV+)
SAM JOHNSON & SARAH NAFTALIS & PAUL SIMMS, What We Do in the Shadows "The Finale" (FX)
LISA KRON, Somebody Somewhere "Num Nums" (HBO)
CAROLYN LIPKA, Hacks "Mrs. Table" (Max)
SETH ROGEN & EVAN GOLDBERG, The Studio "The Note" (Apple TV+)
And the Winner Is...
CAROLYN LIPKA
Hacks "Mrs. Table" (Max)
For the second year in a row, Hacks takes the Comedy Writing award, though it is a different writer this time around. For the first half of the season, Hacks had Deborah and Ava in the midst of their biggest fight yet. The writers let it last longer than usual but we knew at some point that they would get back on the same team. What "Mrs. Table" did well was show us through a very well-written scene at the end (that was also well performed by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder) that although they were making amends, things were permanently changed between them from the fight. But this is also a comedy writing category and this episode was also really funny thanks to Einbinder's complete meltdown scene in the writer's room that found all the right beats in the script.
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
This group of nominees represented both silly and sentimental in terms of comedy. On the silly side, The Studio episode with Ron Howard was my favorite of the season with a madcap story that was focused more on the script than on visual gags like a lot of the rest of the season. The "Kayla Syndrome" episode of English Teacher had one of the funniest premises of any episode this year. On the sentimental side, both episodes of Shrinking that were nominated were very sweet with thoughtful observations but also still a healthy dose of comedy. The Thanksgiving episode of Somebody Somewhere was the most emblematic of how that show was all about found family. Finally, the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows managed to be mostly silly but also just a little bit sentimental for a show that was often just ridiculous. I thought it had a really satisfying finale.
Tomorrow: Outstanding Directing of a Limited/Anthology Series!
