THE WEEK AHEAD: October 29-November 4, 2018
Here's a look at Week #6!
ABC
ABC is all new all week. The only change from their regular schedule is a Mickey's 90th Spectacular special on Sunday night, taking the place of Dancing with the Stars Junior and Shark Tank. The Wednesday comedies had a nice Halloween episode bump last week, but the comedies are airing new episodes on actual Halloween night and could see the bump be given right back and maybe then some.
MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 The Good Doctor
TUESDAY
8:00 The Conners (Halloween episode)
8:30 The Kids Are Alright
9:00 Black-ish (Halloween episode)
9:30 Splitting Up Together
10:00 The Rookie
WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs
8:30 American Housewife

SATURDAY

SUNDAY
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
8:00 Mickey's 90th Spectacular (Special)
10:00 The Alec Baldwin Show
CBS
CBS is all new all week. There's a rare example of a CBS drama having a Halloween episode with NCIS. It'll be interesting to see if it can get a spike like comedies often can.
MONDAY
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 Happy Together
9:00 Magnum P.I.
10:00 Bull
TUESDAY
8:00 NCIS (Halloween episode)
9:00 FBI

SATURDAY
8:00 College Football
SUNDAY
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 God Friended Me
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Madam Secretary
NBC
NBC is all new all week though Manifest is preempted for the week with a special honoring Wicked's 15 years on Broadway. The Chicago shows have been so impressive this year, but could get nicked by Halloween. A marquee Sunday Night Football matchup between the Packers and Patriots ends the week.
MONDAY
8:00 The Voice
10:00 A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway (Special)
TUESDAY

9:00 Dateline NBC
10:00 Saturday Night Live (Repeat)
SUNDAY
7:00 Football Night in America
8:30 Sunday Night Football: Green Bay at New England
FOX
FOX saw the World Series end after five games this year and while the other networks are happy, FOX must be disappointed to not get as many days of big ratings as they have in most recent years. Instead, they will have their usual lineup this week and have a terrible Thursday Night Football matchup between two one-win teams.
MONDAY
8:00 The Resident (Halloween episode)
9:00 9-1-1 (Halloween episode)
TUESDAY
8:00 The Gifted
9:00 Lethal Weapon

8:30 Bob's Burgers
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 Rel
CW
The CW is mostly all new, but they are preempting their regular shows on Wednesday for Halloween night encores of Charmed and Legacies. Halloween can always be a problem for shows, so this makes sense. I'm surprised more networks don't preempt.
MONDAY
8:00 Arrow
9:00 DC's Legends of Tomorrow
TUESDAY
8:00 The Flash
9:00 Black Lightning
WEDNESDAY
8:00 Charmed (Repeat)

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- FOX announced The Masked Singer will debut on Wednesday, January 2 at 9pm while The Passage premieres Monday, January 14 at 9pm. The former is a new unscripted show that seems to be aiming the newest incarnation of The Voice. The latter is a vampire drama that will take over the 9-1-1 slot for awhile.
- ABC has given a "full" season to A Million Little Things. I say "full" in quotation marks because it's only four more episodes for a total of 17, but that's in line with a lot of higher profile dramas lately such as How to Get Away with Murder, The Good Doctor, and This is Us. The difference here is it is not a breakout hit or with a big star, but it's still a vote of confidence for the newbie.

QUICK HITS: FOX Midseason Schedule Suggestion
Here is my FOX midseason schedule suggestion!
FOX has had a pretty good fall so far all things considered, but they clearly are heading in a different direction as evident by their lack of scripted shows on the bench. It's too bad they are moving to a more unscripted/sports direction because they have seen decent seasons so far from their scripted Monday and Wednesday lineup and especially the Friday comedy block anchored by Last Man Standing.
MONDAYS
8:00 The Resident
9:00 (Jan) The Passage/(Apr) 9-1-1
This is the FOX plan and I guess I'm on board with it to give The Passage a chance. But I'm skeptical on The Passage so they might end up wishing they had just seen through the season of 9-1-1 and then launched Passage later in the season.
TUESDAYS
8:00 (Jan) The Orville/(Apr) Big Bounce Battle
9:00 (Jan) Lethal Weapon/(Feb) Gotham
Tuesdays seem ready to be a surrender night but I still would yank The Gifted and let it fill in somewhere later in the season. I would put The Orville at 8pm and eventually replace it with the new Big Bounce Battle. I would let Gotham take the place of Lethal Weapon after its 15 episode season. I don't think any of these shows will work great, but I don't think they'd really work anywhere.
WEDNESDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 The Masked Singer
9:00 Proven Innocent
(late Mar)
8:00 Empire
9:00 Star
FOX seems intent of splitting the Empire/Star season again and that has worked pretty well for them in the past. I think The Masked Singer is a solid gamble here and I would pair it with Proven Innocent just in case Masked surprises.
THURSDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 The Four
(late Mar)
8:00 Showtime at the Apollo
9:00 Mental Samurai
I think FOX should give The Four one more chance at midseason in the slot where it did decently last fall. Late in the season, it can give way to some more unscripted shows... I guess.
FRIDAYS
8:00 Last Man Standing
8:30 The Cool Kids
9:00 (Jan) Hell's Kitchen/(Feb) Masterchef Junior
Fridays are working great for FOX, at least from 8-9pm. I don't see any reason to change that. Hell's Kitchen can give way to Masterchef Junior when the former's season ends.
SUNDAYS
7:00 (Jan) Encores/(Mar) Cosmos
8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 Bob's Burgers
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 Bless The Harts
I'm not sure if Bless the Harts would be ready to go this season but if it is, it's time to say goodbye to Rel, which is clearly a weak link. FOX seems intent on heading to an all animated night here anywhere so that makes sense to me. As they did when it last aired several years ago, the newest edition of Cosmos could air in the 7pm hour.
SUMMER: Spin the Wheel
HIATUS: The Gifted

PILOT REVIEW: Legacies
LEGACIES
Starring: Danielle Rose Russell, Aria Shahghasemi, Kaylee Bryant, Jenny Boyd, Quincy Fouse, Peyton Alex Smith, and Matt Davis
Created by Julie Plec
Written by Julie Plec, Directed by Chris Grismer
IN SHORT: In case you are stuck in the year 2009, here's another supernatural show.
THE PREMISE:
Legacies is set in the universe of the hit and recently ended CW shows The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Legacies is centered on Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), a descendant of the a very powerful supernatural bloodline. At 17 years old and a couple years after The Originals, Hope attends the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. We also meet werewolf Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) and his brother, Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) as well as history teacher (and Vampire Diaries regular) Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis).
THE REVIEW:
I'm going to make this short. I usually try to do extensive reviews even for shows I hate and even if I'm predestined to hate it (like a sci-fi show). But I don't think I should be giving this one a full review. I have never seen an episode of The Vampire Diaries or The Originals so I don't think I can really understand this world. I guess a devil's advocate would say a good show would interest me even if I don't know the universe. But I don't think my review would be fair. I like the idea of the Hogwarts-ish boarding school, but none of the supernatural or teen drama elements excite me in the least.
BOTTOM LINE:
I don't think this is the worst new show, but it's certainly the most unnecessary one. I think the age of vampires and supernatural elements is not happening right now and it feels like this is a show that should have premiered in 2010. Not that I would have watched it then ether.

QUICK HITS: NBC Midseason Schedule Suggestion
Over the next couple weeks, I will be making midseason schedule suggestions.
Today I start with NBC: a network that doesn't have a ton of room available and has already announced some of its midseason schedule.
MONDAYS
8:00 (Jan) America's Got Talent: The Champions/(late Feb) The Voice
10:00 (Jan) The Enemy Within/(Apr) The Inbetween
America's Got Talent: The Champions is already announced and The Voice will of course be back at its usual time. I like the use of Talent here and I am sure NBC is going to keep Manifest here. But I think we can all see the direction Manifest is heading in. It's doing OK right now but I think it's going to keep dropping. So I'd send it elsewhere and use Talent to launch The Enemy Within. Talent will likely be higher rated than The Voice's spring run so why not use that time of year to launch a high profile drama? When it ends its likely 13 episode season, NBC can try to launch another, less high profile drama: The Inbetween.
TUESDAYS
8:00 (Jan) Ellen's Game of Games/(late Feb) The Voice
9:00 (Jan) This is Us/(mid March) The Village
10:00 New Amsterdam
I think this schedule is pretty easy to predict and I think it is what they should do as well. I know Rise didn't work as a This is Us replacement, but it was a solid attempt and I don't think that's a bad move with The Village. Let The Village air at 10pm following the last two or three episodes of the season of This is Us, then move it to 9pm. New Amsterdam has a full season and can air the whole season at 10pm.
WEDNESDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 The Titan Games
9:00 The Titan Games
10:00 Manifest
(mid Feb)
8:00 Chicago Med
9:00 Chicago Fire
10:00 Chicago PD
NBC is planning to launch The Titan Games on Wednesdays in January and put Chicago Med on hiatus. That's fine, but the #OneChicago night is working extremely well and Med has arguably been the most impressive of the three in its lead-off slot. I don't think it's fair to bench just Med. If they're going to give the Chicago shows a break, give all three of them a break. So I would double up The Titan Games and let that lead into the remaining Manifest episodes. After 5-6 weeks, they can bring back the Chicago trio to continue to air together.
THURSDAYS
8:00 Superstore
8:30 (Jan) The Good Place/(Feb) Abby's
9:00 Brooklyn Nine-Nine
9:30 (Jan) Will & Grace/(Apr) A.P. Bio
10:00 Law & Order: SVU
Well, we all know that Abby's and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are coming to the night. However, Will & Grace is not cutting it at the 9pm anchor. I would give Brooklyn Nine-Nine a try at 9pm and move Will & Grace to 9:30pm, cancelling I Feel Bad. When The Good Place ends its season, Abby's can take over the 8:30pm. When Will & Grace ends its season, A.P. Bio can take its place late in the season when it won't do as much damage.
FRIDAYS
8:00 Blindspot
9:00 (Jan) Midnight, Texas/(Feb) The Blacklist
10:00 Dateline NBC
I think this is what NBC will do and it makes sense to me.
SUNDAYS
(Jan) Various Programming
(Feb)
8:00 World of Dance
10:00 Good Girls
This is NBC's plan for the spring and I don't love it or think it will do that well. But given what they have, it seems like the best option. The only other option is to leave Chicago night alone and let The Titan Games air here.
SUMMER: The Wall, Songland
CANCEL: I Feel Bad

THE WEEK AHEAD: October 22-28, 2018
Here's a look at Week #5!
ABC
ABC has a pretty normal week except there is no The Good Doctor or Friday comedy hour. Wednesday has a night full of Halloween comedy episodes but the night to watch will be the Tuesday lineup, which had mixed results on its premiere night this past week. The Conners got off to a solid start but could be in for a big drop as there was certainly a decent amount of curiosity last week.
MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 The Rookie (Repeat)
TUESDAY
8:00 The Conners
8:30 The Kids are Alright
9:00 Black-ish
9:30 Splitting Up Together
10:00 The Rookie
WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs (Halloween episode)
8:30 American Housewife (Halloween episode)
9:00 Modern Family (Halloween episode)
9:30 Single Parents (Halloween episode)
10:00 A Million Little Things
THURSDAY
8:00 Grey's Anatomy
9:00 Station 19
10:00 How to Get Away with Murder
FRIDAY
8:00 It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Special)
9:00 Child Support
10:00 20/20
SATURDAY
8:00 College Football
SUNDAY
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos (Halloween episode)
8:00 Dancing with the Stars Junior (Halloween episode)
9:00 Shark Tank
10:00 The Alec Baldwin Show
CBS
CBS is all new all week with its regular lineup. It also has a few Halloween episodes sprinkled in. CBS always seems like a network that could be prone to getting dinged by the World Series competition.
MONDAY
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 Happy Together
9:00 Magnum P.I.
10:00 Bull
TUESDAY
8:00 NCIS
9:00 FBI
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans
WEDNESDAY

10:00 Criminal Minds
THURSDAY
8:00 The Big Bang Theory (Halloween episode)
8:30 Young Sheldon (Halloween episode)
9:00 Mom
9:30 Murphy Brown
10:00 S.W.A.T.
FRIDAY
8:00 MacGyver
9:00 Hawaii Five-0 (Halloween episode)
10:00 Blue Bloods
SATURDAY
8:00 College Football
SUNDAY
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 God Friended Me
9:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:00 Madam Secretary
NBC
NBC has an all-new week. Friday has the season premiere of Midnight, Texas, last seen in the summer of 2017. With Blindspot having a rough start in the 8pm hour, it seems unlikely that Midnight will make any kind of dent in the ratings.

CW
The CW finally rolls out the rest of its lineup this week with the season premiere of DC's Legends of Tomorrow on Monday and the series premiere of Legacies on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if there's any interest in the Vampire Diaries universe anymore. I'm guessing not much even with a compatible lead-in of Supernatural.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS will be giving the prime post-Super Bowl slot to the series premiere of their new reality show The World's Best. Unscripted debuts following the Super Bowl has worked well in the past for CBS with two Survivor premieres and the series premiere of Undercover Boss in 2010. No word on what the regular slot will be, but my guess is Sunday nights.
- ABC handed a full season order to Single Parents, the first ABC newbie to get a back order. The comedy has done alright in its Wednesday 9:30pm slot and ABC is giving it a chance to grow and become another solid member of its comedy arsenal.
- NBC has ordered three additional episodes of Manifest. It will not get a full 22 episode season but instead get a 16 episode order. This seems more about NBC's plans for midseason than about the show, which has been a solid performer so far.
- Continuing the full season orders: CBS handed out full seasons to God Friended Me, The Neighborhood, and Magnum P.I. God Friended Me and The Neighborhood have been decent performers so far while Magnum has underperformed, but will get a full season chance. The only CBS newbie to not get a full season yet is Happy Together and it seems unlikely it will.
- FOX handed out a full season to The Cool Kids. The Friday sitcom has been the top comedy premiere on any network so far thanks to its Last Man Standing lead-in. It has dropped since then, but could still be considered an overperformer on Friday night at its current level.
- And finally, a sophomore drama also got a full season: Station 19. The Grey's Anatomy spinoff was originally only ordered for 13 episodes, but will now go a full 22.

CBS
CBS is all new all week with its regular lineup. It also has a few Halloween episodes sprinkled in. CBS always seems like a network that could be prone to getting dinged by the World Series competition.

SATURDAY

SUNDAY

NBC
NBC has an all-new week. Friday has the season premiere of Midnight, Texas, last seen in the summer of 2017. With Blindspot having a rough start in the 8pm hour, it seems unlikely that Midnight will make any kind of dent in the ratings.

PILOT REVIEW: The Rookie
THE ROOKIE
Starring: Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin, Mercedes Mason, Melissa O'Neil, Afton Williamson, Eric Winter
Created by Alexi Hawley
Written by Alexi Hawley, Directed by Liz Friedlander
IN SHORT: Nathan Fillion is Old!
THE PREMISE:
Although much of the promotion for this show focused on Nathan Fillion's return to TV as a 40 year old rookie cop, this show is actually centered on several rookies and their training officers. Besides Fillion's John Nolan, the other rookies are the son of a commanding officer, Jackson West (Titus Makin) and a smart and eager rookie, Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil). Nolan's training officer is ambitious Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson). Chen's training officer is the overbearing Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). Rounding out the main cast is Sergeant Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones), Commanding Officer Zoe Andersen (Merecedes Mason), and West's training officer, Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz).
THE REVIEW:
This is not a slam, but this is probably the most by the books entry of the entire fall season. It's a routine cop show through and through and that can be a good thing or a bad thing. I think it has the capability to be a good thing. After all, Blue Bloods is basically a standard cop show and that has had a successful run creatively and with audiences. Sometimes it's a little bit refreshing to see a show that simply wants to be a generic cop show and isn't trying to aim for anything higher. I know that is probably the reason this will not have critical love, but I think it can be appreciated for what it is.
As I said in the premise, this show is much more of an ensemble one than the promos made it appear. Fillion is of course the center and does a good job, although making fun of his age gets, ahem, old very quickly. The rest of the characters are stock characters: overly ambitious, tough guy, stronger than she looks, result of nepotism, etc. But they are played well with Afton Williamson a standout when she's not forced to say ridiculous things like how she wants to be police commissioner in her first minutes of working with her rookie. Maybe the most annoying "stock" character was Richard T. Jones who is playing the gruff boss who says things that a boss would never actually say to a new rookie.
The smartest thing this show did in the pilot was get us in the squad cars right away and get cases going. It let us get to know the cops more naturally and allow the partners to start having chemistry together without getting too bogged down in exposition. Although the plots and cases were pretty thin, there was enough natural focus on the relationships. This show seems to be heading in a good direction but I'm going to be annoyed if the gimmick about Nathan Fillion being old last much longer than 2-3 more episodes. A joke here and there, of course. But major plot points? I hope the show stays away from that.
BOTTOM LINE:
The negative opinion of this show is its super generic but I'll take the positive route and say this show does a pretty good job at being what it is. It doesn't aim high but it clears its low bar and that's not without its merits.

PILOT REVIEW: The Kids Are Alright
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
Starring: Mary McCormack, Jack Gore, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Andy Walken, Santino Barnard, with Tim Doyle, and Michael Cudlitz
Created by Tim Doyle
Written by Tim Doyle, Directed by Randall Einhorn
IN SHORT: If The Goldbergs Were 10 Years Older and Catholic
THE PREMISE:
Set in the glorious 1970s, The Kids are Alright is centered on an Irish Catholic family with eight boys making life crazy for mother Peggy (Mary McCormack) and father Mike (Michael Cudlitz). The boys range from college aged to a baby. Oldest son Lawrence (Sam Straley) is home from his first year at seminary and thinking about leaving the path to becoming a priest. The narrator looking back in this show is Timmy (Jack Gore), a pre-teen who is attempting to find his performing arts side in the pilot.
THE REVIEW:
I think if this show had premiered five or six years ago, I would have been super excited about it. But as much as I hate to admit it, I think I have a little bit of ABC family comedy fatigue. That doesn't mean I'm not still watching pretty much every sitcom on ABC besides Speechless because I am. But everything kind of follows a similar formula. Families fight a lot but they learn something about what it means to be a family by the end of the episode.
That's not to say that I hated everything about The Kids are Alright. There are a lot of good things about it. The family seems very real and a family with that many kids hasn't been seen in a sitcom in awhile. Mary McCormack is funny, but I inevitably compared her to the superior Wendi McLendon-Covey from The Goldbergs. She still had some good one liners and some funny comedic timing. I didn't think Michael Cudlitz did enough to establish himself as the patriarch of the family. He seemed to be in the background for a lot of the episode, even when he was integral to the plot. He also had an unfunny "phony news" line that has been played all summer in promos and wasn't any funnier in the episode.
Whereas the pilot and early episodes of The Goldbergs seemed a little "too 80s," I actually think The Kids are Alright could stand to be a little more 70s. I didn't think there was enough in this episode to firmly root it in the 1970s. It didn't need anything overt, but it could have used some more clever and small details. This is an era that can be evoked in very strong ways (look at The Wonder Years) but it just didn't have that ping of nostalgia that I think it needed.
BOTTOM LINE:
I think this show will be pretty good but something's got to give at some point for me with these ABC comedies. Maybe this will be the odd one out or maybe it will push a different one off my list. But something's gotta go.

PILOT REVIEW: The Conners
THE CONNERS
Starring: John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, Jayden Rey, Maya Lynne Robinson
Created by Matt Williams
Developed by Bruce Helford, Bruce Rasmussen, & Dave Caplan
Written by Bruce Helford, Bruce Rasmussen, & Dave Caplan, Directed by Andy Ackerman
IN SHORT: Roseanne minus the Trump references and someone else...
THE PREMISE:
I think if you're reading this blog, you know the premise of this one. Following Roseanne Barr's racist tweet in May, her very successful reboot of Roseanne was cancelled. The creators and key members pitched a spinoff centered on the rest of the Conner family following Roseanne (the character's) death. All the cast is back including vets of the original series and those who joined for the revival.
THE REVIEW:
I am glad that this spinoff is happening. I thought the Roseanne reboot was pretty good and didn't really understand all the political tinged responses to it. I thought it represented families in America in 2018 pretty well, for good or for bad. After Barr's reckless decision nearly resulted in everyone being out of a job, I was happy to see that ABC is giving this show a chance and giving the cast and crew a chance to soldier on.
The first episode is pretty heavy, but it's handled very well. Regardless of what the star did, the character of Roseanne Conner was very missed by her on screen family and I thought it was smart to pick up the series a few weeks after her death. John Goodman, who seemed off his game in the spring revival, was a standout here with an emotional and strong performance. Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert were predictably strong too. It's nice to see that these characters could still be themselves even without the centerpiece of the show. This could have gone a lot of ways and it very easily could have gone off the rails. It's a testament to the people working on this show that they handled everything with class and poignancy.
I wondered through most of the episode what this show would look like on a regular basis with the pilot episode being very good, but also very heavy-handed. The show brilliantly gave us a glimpse in the final minutes with the family starting to revert to the sarcastic characters we know so well and Dan coming out of his funk to help grandson Mark. The show then launched into a new, but familiar, title sequence at the end of the episode. I thought that was a great way of the show telling the audience "we had to deal with this, but now we're moving forward" in a creative way. I think this show, with or without Roseanne, still has a lot to say about what it's like to be a blue-collar family.
BOTTOM LINE:
I watched all the episodes of the Roseanne revival last spring and thought some episodes were strong and others weren't but Roseanne Barr was one of the best parts while the rest of the cast was off and on. With Barr gone, it gave the rest of the cast a chance to shine and at least in the pilot, they rose to the occasion. Let's hope it continues.

THE WEEK AHEAD: October 15-21, 2018
Here's a look at Week #4 of the season!
ABC
We're heading into week four of the season and ABC is finally debuting its Tuesday lineup. Newbies The Kids are Alright and The Rookie join returnees Black-ish and Splitting Up Together. But all eyes will be on The Conners. After Roseanne set the world on fire with its ratings last spring, ABC will try to get eyeballs to see her show without her. ABC has had a rough fall so far so a good Tuesday start would go a long way to helping them turn things around. Expect the ratings of The Conners to be national news on Wednesday whether they are good or bad. Elsewhere, Grey's Anatomy has the week off with Halloween specials and that could be bad news for Station 19, coming off a series high.

CBS has a normal week. It's been interesting to see the CBS shows be among the most stable this fall after disappointing debuts in general. Shows like SEAL Team, Criminal Minds, and S.W.A.T. have inched up while newbies like Magnum P.I. and Murphy Brown had disappointing premieres but have not dropped much since then.

All American had a bomb debut, but it was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that got the 0.1 demo while lead-in Dynasty managed to stay at 0.2. All three could easily get 0.1 this week.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- The first new show to get a full season is... New Amsterdam! NBC has handed a full season order to the medical drama after three solid outings. This comes as no surprise, but it is surprising that Manifest didn't get an episode extension at the same time.
- Continuing the good news for medical dramas, FOX handed a full season order to The Resident, which only had a 13 episode order for its second season. The drama has been a low-ish but very consistent performer on Monday nights so far this season.
- The full season order news continued on Thursday when FBI got a full season from CBS. The Dick Wolf drama had a drop this past week but seems like it could be a Tuesday night player.
- Despite Damon Wayans' declaration that he was leaving the series, Lethal Weapon got an order for two additional episodes from FOX and Wayans will appear in them.

THE PREMISE:
In a reimagining of the popular early 2000s WB show, Charmed once again centers on three sisters who are witches known as "the charmed ones." We first meet the two younger sisters, Mel and Maggie (Melonie Diaz & Sarah Jeffery). After their mother's mysterious death, the sisters meet their long lost older half-sister, Macy (Madeline Matock). They are brought together and told of their abilities by guardian angel Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans). Rounding out the main cast is Mel's part-time lover, Niko (Ellen Tamaki) and a friend and colleague of Macy's, Galvin (Ser'Darius Blain).
THE REVIEW:
I'll start by saying that I've never seen the original Charmed so I have no grounds to compare this reboot to. But I have a feeling that both this show and the original are not my type of show. If you've been reading this blog over the years, you know that I am not a fan of supernatural shows. I am intrigued by the concept here, but every supernatural element makes me realize that this is just not a show I'm going to be watching on a weekly basis. The special effects seemed decent for a CW show, but I wonder if that will change beyond the pilot.
The strength here is the performances and the chemistry between the three sisters. Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery, and Madeline Matock are all strong individually and together. If I was into shows like this, I would be intrigued by the chemistry of the sisters. They are funny and they each already seem to have their own personalities (not to mention their own powers). The three of them were cast well so let's hope they can get along better than the infamous bickering original cast. The rest of the cast is decent too, particularly Rupert Evans as the guardian angel.
Where this show stumbles a bit is it's insistence on trying to be a major voice in the #metoo movement. I think there are plenty of shows that could effectively have #metoo storylines or arcs and some already have. But in a show about a trio of witches, they already needed to have a lot of exposition in the pilot and I felt like some of its "woke"-ness just felt forced instead of being a natural weaving with the plot. It's not even that I think a supernatural show is incapable of tackling major issues, it's just that it needs to earn the right to do that effectively and it hasn't yet.
BOTTOM LINE:
I think there's some good things here but it's not for me. When I want to watch a show about witches, I'll watch Bewitched on DVD.

PILOT REVIEW: All American
ALL AMERICAN
Starring: Daniel Ezra, Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Samantha Logan, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian, Karimah Westbrook, Monet Mazur, and Taye Diggs
Created by April Blair
Written by April Blair, Directed by Rob Hardy
IN SHORT: For those who wish Friday Night Lights felt a little more like a CW show.
THE PREMISE:
Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) is a star high school football player from the wrong side of town. After fights, shootings and other concerns, he is recruited by Beverly Hills High coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs) to play for them. Spencer has to try to fit in to a new, rich high school and a football team led by some resistant players including Billy's son, Jordan (Michael Evans Behling). Also in the cast are Spencer's mom (Karimah Westbrook), two potential love interests at Beverly Hills High (Samantha Logan and Bre-Z), and Billy's wife, Laura (Monet Mazur).
THE REVIEW:
All American is a show busting with potential and some pieces came together in the pilot while others did not. This show has a tall order from my perspective because I think Friday Nights Lights is one of the two best dramas in TV history and there are obvious comparisons here. I've also been re-watching FNL so it's even more fresh in my head and I'm going to try to not let that skew my opinion of All American, which has its own merits and a different story to tell.
The strongest element in All American are the two primary characters: Spencer James and Billy Baker. Daniel Ezra and Taye Diggs turn in strong performances and have already developed a natural rapport with each other that is fun to watch. I'm also intrigued by Spencer's home life and liked the scenes with him and his mom and brother. Where the show went off the rails a little bit was when it became a little too much like a teen soap or melodrama (there's two girls that like Spencer! The boosters aren't gonna be happy about this!). Those were times where it devolved into a standard teen drama or sports movie and it took away from the solid foundation of the show.
I think this is a really promising show overall if it can find the right voice. Right now, the tone is oddly trying to mix a sentimental drama where a harder edged drama about the culture clash. I think the culture clash element is an intriguing component but it needs to get itself rooted in the relationships. I can already predict some of the storylines that could happen this season because I've seen other teen dramas or sports movies. But, this show definitely seems to be aspiring to be better than that and it has all the right tools to be better.
BOTTOM LINE:
I'm rooting for All American more than most fall shows because I think its potential is very strong. It could become my first regular CW show I watch. I hope it does.
