In a somewhat surprising announcement, NBC renewed the Jennifer Lopez drama Shades of Blue for a second season. It's especially surprising since it hit a series low last night. Airing in the tough Thursday 10pm timeslot, where NBC has had trouble since ER, it had a strong debut the first week followed by a rough drop in the second week. It seemed to be leveling off after that until last night when it dropped again. NBC must think they have something here though and are committed to letting it grow.
Shades of Blue joins all three Chicago series, Blindspot, The Blacklist, and Law & Order: SVU on the renewal list for NBC next season. That's a lot of dramas so that may not bode well for bubble shows The Mysteries of Laura and Grimm. NBC still has a couple dramas to debut too including Heartbreaker and Game of Silence.
