Viewers: 13.1 million, 18-49 demo: 5.1

As usual, Wednesday night was the only night of the week where FOX really made a dent in the ratings. At 8pm, Rosewood was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Despite a 1.8 demo that includes massive pre-tune in for Empire, it is more than a half of a demo point above any other FOX newbie. And with no NFL doubleheader, it will surely be the second highest rated FOX show of the week. Because of that, it got an order for extra scripts today. At 9pm, Empire remained dominant above everything but it was down another six tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo. It really can't even be compared to any other show right now but FOX would probably be a sigh of relief if it stopped dropping.

CBS saw series lows across the board. At 8pm, Survivor was down three tenths in viewers and a rough four tenths in the demo. This show fluctuates between a 2.0 and a 2.5 demo so I wouldn't worry much but it was still a big week-to-week drop. At 9pm, Criminal Minds is looking weaker and weaker as it fell a million viewers and three tenths in the demo from its season premiere. How are they going to launch a spin-off in the spring when the lead show is getting these numbers? At 10pm, Code Black fell 1.8 million viewers and three tenths from its debut last week. It's pretty much out of the conversation already for getting an additional order but CBS will probably let it air here through the fall.

On ABC, the 8pm hour took a step back after it overachieved last week. It was still solid though and won the hour. The Middle was down six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo while The Goldbergs was down six tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. At 9pm, Modern Family was down seven tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. It's awfully early for this show to already be in the 2s, but it's showing its age. At 9:30pm, Black-ish had a slight rebound after last week's ugly drop. It was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. It was the only show on the entire night that was up from last week. The wheels came off at 10pm though where Nashville was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo to a series low. I just don't get why ABC kept this show here when they had a shot to launch a new drama after their successful comedy block. Even in the very weak 10pm hour, it was a distant third.

Finally, NBC was the only network without a series low for one of its shows. Nothing was overly impressive but this lineup is definitely helping keep NBC stay afloat. At 8pm, The Mysteries of Laura was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. With a heavily promoted episode featuring Whoopi Goldberg, Law & Order: SVU was up three tenths in viewers and down a tenth in the demo. This remains one of NBC's strongest scripted options even in year 17. At 10pm, Chicago PD easily won its hour, though it was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week's season premiere.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Black-ish (ABC)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Nashville (ABC)

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...
