At the Winter TCA tour, FOX handed out renewals to three shows: Empire and Gotham for a second season and Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a third season.
After two incredible weeks, FOX has given a very early renewal to Empire. The show premiered to a stunning 3.8 demo and then pulled off an even more incredible feat by rising to a 4.0 demo. It's still early but this show seems to have the makings of something special for FOX. Gotham is the only other new show FOX has been able to do anything with this year. The Batman origin story premiered to a strong 3.3 demo. It has come back a bit but still posted a 2.5 demo in its most recent episode and it gets a lot of online buzz and commentary. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has had a successful move to Sunday nights in its second season. The critically acclaimed comedy has been more stable and has proven to be surprisingly compatible with its animated lead-in, The Simpsons. It could dip some this spring as the FOX Sunday lineup usually does, but it will probably go up again in the fall if it keeps the same timeslot.
In a disastrous season for FOX, these three shows (along with the already renewed Masterchef Junior and sometimes the animated shows) have been the bright spots and FOX rewarded them accordingly.
