FRESHMAN SCORECARD: February 2014

Here is the Freshman Scorecard for February with several new shows added! As always, these are ranked from best to worst chance for survival at each network. By the March scorecard, we can add About a Boy, Growing Up Fisher, Mind Games, and Mixology to the list!

Past February scorecards: 2013   2012   2011

ABC

The Goldbergs - There's no way ABC is not going to renew this show considering how weak their freshman class has been. All things considered, it's probably been the most consistent performer from ABC's newbies and it's sure to get a renewal. The question is, will they move it to Wednesdays?

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Another slam dunk renewal. These numbers would be noticeably disappointing and troublesome if any other new dramas were working but all of them are or were below the 1.0 demo threshold so a show that's getting above a 2.0 demo regularly is an easy call.

Trophy Wife
- I don't think this one is going to get renewed even though ABC seems like they really wish they could. I think they're going to renew The Goldbergs and call it a day with their other new comedies, including the upcoming Mixology.

The Great Christmas Light Fight - This could come back for another December run. We'll see.

Super Fun Night/Once Upon a Time in Wonderland/Betrayal - No way these are coming back with short episode orders and terrible performances.

Killer Women - Yet the new Killer Women has an even worse chance than the trio listed above. It's getting its short eight episode order cut short by two, that's the final nail in the coffin.

Back in the Game/Lucky 7/The Assets - Cancelled.

CBS

The Crazy Ones - These comedies continue to be incredibly close and could easily go in any order. The Crazy Ones had the lowest demo of the three this week but I still think it has the best chance because the lead-in isn't crazy strong and CBS just seems to love it more than the other two.

Mom - I do think Mom is going to get renewed despite so-so numbers on Monday night. I think CBS has to realize that they're Monday lineup is a little low outside of How I Met Your Mother and at least they know they have a show that's not going to tank badly here. I also think both The Crazy Ones and The Millers would perform worse if they were in Mom's slot.

The Millers - This one could still get renewed too but it keeps coming back to retention for me. The issue that doomed $#*! My Dad Says, Rob, and How to Be a Gentleman will be a problem here too. I feel like CBS will think they can do better with a new sitcom.

Intelligence - After a very promising Tuesday preview, things have plummeted for this show on Monday with Hostages levels. With most of CBS' veteran dramas continuing to perform well, I don't see them bringing this one back.

Hostages - This is more dead than Intelligence but CBS did let it run its full 15 episode season.

We Are Men - Cancelled.

NBC

The Blacklist - Renewed.

Chicago PD - All this show probably needed to do was not fall flat on its face to get renewed. It has not so it's a near sure thing for renewal with NBC probably hoping it will grow like Chicago Fire did.

The Michael J. Fox Show - No way this one is coming back and maybe NBC will learn to stop handing out 22 episode orders without even seeing the quality.

Dracula - I don't see any reason this show comes back unless it's a financial decision because it's cheap and doing well overseas. The ratings here don't merit any type of return.

Welcome to the Family/Ironside/Sean Saves the World - Cancelled.

FOX

Sleepy Hollow - Renewed.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine - The surest non-official renewal on any network now thanks to its stunning Golden Globes wins for Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Actor.

Almost Human - I think this show has overperformed after a weak start on Mondays, but FOX did not extend the episode order and has been airing episodes sporadically which doesn't help its case. However, Rake bombing may help matters.

Dads - It has continued to not crumble and die but I think this has one season show written all over it especially with FOX ending its freshman run in February.

Rake - A non-starter out of the gate on Thursday nights. With so many dramas around and so many more on deck and in development, there's no chance FOX brings back Rake.

Enlisted - Dying a slow death on Friday nights.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
