THE FRIDAY FIVE: Top 5 TV News Stories of the Week Ending 10/30/20

Here's a look at this week's Top 5 TV news stories!

#1 - JON STEWART IS BACK!
The most exciting TV news of the week for me is the return of Jon Stewart to a TV show. Although he has made several appearances on his pal Stephen Colbert's show, Stewart has not had a show since his departure from The Daily Show in 2015. Now he is coming back to Apple TV+ for an untitled series set to debut in 2021. The one hour episodes will be single topic focused and will not necessarily air on a regular basis but as topics present themselves. The show has already been picked up for multiple seasons and is a big get for Apple TV+ as they try to be a bigger player in the streaming wars. Apple TV+ has also ordered a comedy, Platonic, starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.

#2 - PEACOCK CANCELS "BRAVE NEW WORLD"
Peacock has had very few originals ready to air thanks to the pandemic shutting down production a few months before its July launch. Only one major new scripted show was ready for air at the launch date and that was Brave New World, based on the famous novel. It was their highest profile show by default and also very expensive (the first season was reported to be around $100 million). It got a decent amount of promotion but it couldn't get itself in the conversation and it was announced this week there will be no second season. I gave up on Brave New World about halfway through the first season despite how visually impressive it was and now I'm glad I did. The next big hope Peacock has to get on the map is the Saved by the Bell reboot, premiering November 25.

#3 - THE CW ANNOUNCES MIDSEASON PREMIERE DATES
The CW, which protected its fall lineup from coronavirus disruptions, is the first network to announce a slew of premiere dates in 2021. Most of the shows that would be fall shows in a typical year coming back across January and February. First off the bench for scripted shows is season two Batwoman on January 17, with Javicia Leslie taking over the title role from Ruby Rose. All American follows the next night and Riverdale and Nancy Drew on January 20. January 21 will see the return of Legacies at 9pm preceded by the series premiere of Walker, a Walker Texas Ranger reboot starring Supernatural star Jared Padalecki in a familiar timeslot. Charmed is back on January 24 and Black Lightning on February 8. Finally, The Flash returns on February 23 and will be followed by the newest DC Universe show, Superman & Lois, at 9pm.

#4 - "TED LASSO" SCORES SEASON THREE RENEWAL
Season 2 has not even started filming yet but Apple TV+ handed out a third season renewal to Ted Lasso. The Jason Sudeikis comedy premiered this summer and must be doing well for the young streamer. If you haven't checked out this show, it's worth watching! Also renewed this week was The Babysitters Club for Season 2 and Narcos: Mexico for Season 3 on Netflix, No Activity for an animated Season 4 on CBS All Access and Big Brother for Season 23 (!) on CBS.

#5 - UZO ADUBA TO LEAD "IN TREATMENT" REBOOT
HBO has been plotting a reboot of In Treatment, the critically acclaimed psychotherapy drama that originally ran from 2008-2010. The reboot will feature Uzo Aduba in the starring role as Dr. Brooke Lawrence. The original series ran five nights a week and produced 106 episodes in three seasons. It's not clear if the reboot will be quite as ambitious, I suspect it will not be. It is slated to return in 2021.
