TOP 10 TUESDAY: Top 10 Halloween/Haunted Episodes (Pre-1995)

In honor of Halloween, this week and next week will focus on Top 10 Halloween/Haunted Episodes. I decided to break it down from pre-1995 and 1995-present. So this week is the Top 10 from before 1995!

Close Calls:
The Andy Griffith Show "The Haunted House"
Bewitched "The Safe and Sane Halloween"
I Dream of Jeannie "My Master the Ghostbreaker"

10. Cheers "Fairy Tales Can Come True"
(October 25, 1984)
This episode is not haunted by any means but is incredibly sweet and one of the first really great Cliff-centric episodes of the series. It's completely charming but also eye opening to see that character let his guard down and show his insecurities.

9. Laverne & Shirley "Haunted House" (March 22, 1977)
Perhaps the most standard "haunted house" episode on this list, it's a fun opportunity to get Laverne, Shirley, Lenny and Squiggy in a room together. Sure it's not super scary, but the characters are scared and it is funny.

8. The Brady Bunch "Fright Night" (October 27, 1972)
This episode is not specifically tied to Halloween but it did air in late October. The Brady kids trying to spook each other is a fun "escalating scares" episode. It's about as scary as The Brady Bunch might get aside from the outfits in most every episode.

7. The Jeffersons "Now You See Me, Now You Don't" (October 21/28, 1979)
A genuinely suspenseful two part episode, there are some great costumes and moments even if some are a little hammy (it is The Jeffersons after all). But the episode really does do a good job of building fear and suspense while still continuing to be funny.

6. Bewitched "Trick or Treat"
(October 28, 1965)
Both black and white Halloween episodes of Bewitched did a tremendous job of exploring prejudice themes. The second one is a little goofier but does have a truly fantastic scene between Samantha and Endora where Samantha accuses her mother of being the stereotype they work so hard to fight against.

5. Roseanne "Boo!" (October 31, 1989)
Roseanne was well known for its Halloween episodes and the love of Halloween from the Conner family. The first one they did is probably the best "escalating scares" episode out there with Roseanne and Dan trying to outdo each other in a very festive episode.

4. Cheers "Bar Wars V: Final Judgment" (October 31, 1991)
I loved the Bar Wars episodes of Cheers and the final one, clearly set to Halloween, is probably the strongest one of them all. The stakes had been raised so high from years of competitions and this was a very satisfying payoff.

3. The Dick Van Dyke Show "The Ghost of A. Chantz" (September 30, 1964)
This episode genuinely gave me the creeps when I was younger. The Petries going to a seemingly haunted cabin with Buddy and Sally goes between creepy moments and hilarious moments with such ease and the action never stops in a very fun episode.

2. Bewitched "The Witches Are Out" (October 29, 1964)
The first of six Halloween episodes of Bewitched is the best one. It is a perfect example of how much early Bewitched episodes strived to be about much more than witchcraft. It's an allegory to prejudice at a time where that was rampant. Watching it today will still be a relevant lesson and it's a very sharp look through a fantasy lens.

1. Happy Days "Haunted"
(October 29, 1974)
The quintessential Halloween episode as far as I'm concerned. It is always #1 for me when I talk about Halloween episodes. It has such a throwback feel to how Halloween must have been in the 1950s (or at least how I hoped it was). It's got a little bit of suspense but mostly it just leaves you yearning for a Halloween season of a time gone by.

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...

DECADE IN REVIEW: The Best Comedies of the 2010s

During the month of December, I will be looking back at the decade that was the 2010s on TV. I will be sharing my favorite sitcoms, dramas, the best episodes, the best performances and the worst shows of the decade. To be eligible for this list, a show had to air the majority of its episodes in the 2010s. However, for the rankings and determination, all episodes were taken into account, including ones that may have aired before 2010. I will also preface that there are comedies that have aired this decade that I haven't watched yet so this is the best of what I have watched. To be fair, that preface is more true for dramas. There's not a ton of unwatched comedies sitting in my Netflix or Amazon watchlist. So here are my Top 10 comedies of the 2010s! Close Calls:  Master of None (Netflix) - An inconsistent but occasionally fascinating commentary on many life issues done so with innovative storytelling. The Good Place (NBC) - A show that aims high with a fascinating premis...
