FALL PREVIEW 2019: Tuesday

Here is my Fall Preview for Tuesday! A night with no changes on two networks and the only new shows airing on ABC.

ABC
8:00 The Conners (2nd season)
8:30 Bless This Mess (2nd season)
9:00 MIXED-ISH
9:30 Black-ish (6th season)
10:00 EMERGENCE
ABC is making some changes to its Tuesday lineup with the only two new shows on any network on Tuesdays. First up though is the return of The Conners. As I mentioned in my sophomore preview, The Conners wasn't at the level of Roseanne but was valuable to the night as evidenced by how the night went after its season ended. It is followed by Bless This Mess, which is getting a boost of confidence after a six episode run last spring. ABC has spunoff Black-ish again but some proof of how badly Black-ish is doing, the spinoff will actually air first. Mixed-ish will air at 9pm and it seems to have some vibes of The Goldbergs. It also seems like ABC is trying to make it very much its own show and not too closely connected, at least in advertisements. Black-ish follows at 9:30pm and remains a critical darling, but its ratings were abysmal last season. At 10pm is the new thriller Emergence, which was developed at NBC but picked up by ABC. Tuesday at 10pm has been ugly to ABC since NYPD Blue left the air in 2005. I don't think this is the show that will change things.

CBS
8:00 NCIS (17th season)
9:00 F.B.I. (2nd season)
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans (6th season)
CBS is keeping its lineup in tact this fall with a trio of dramas that were among the top shows in total viewers last season. NCIS seems to have some buzz heading into its 17th season thanks to the temporary return of former cast member Cote de Pablo. FBI will try to get some mojo going in season two before its spinoff arrives at midseason. It's not known yet if FBI: Most Wanted will air on Tuesdays or not, but it could be a 10pm candidate which might mean that NCIS: New Orleans' days are numbered in the slot. The veteran drama was pretty weak last season and seems headed for a timeslot downgrade or maybe even a cancellation.

NBC
8:00 The Voice (17th edition)
9:00 This is Us (4th season)
10:00 New Amsterdam (2nd season)
NBC is also keeping its lineup in tact. The Voice had a particularly dreadful Tuesday run last spring but it will be back at 8pm and tends to do better in the fall. This is Us returns at 9pm and doesn't seem to quite have the buzz it has in seasons past. It will still be one of TV's top shows but the declines seem likely to continue. It will continue to be followed by New Amsterdam, which was a good match with This is Us but struggled on its own. If This is Us continues to drop, expect New Amsterdam to as well.

FOX
8:00 The Resident (3rd season)
9:00 Empire (6th season)
FOX is revamping Tuesday nights, but not bringing any new shows in. Instead, they are bringing shows over from Monday and Wednesday. The Resident has held its own for two seasons on Mondays and now is tasked with leading off Tuesdays. It will be interesting to see if its loyal audience follows it over to a new night. The final season of Empire follows at 9pm after airing on Wednesdays for its entire run. This show burned brightly but quickly. This doesn't seem like it's the kind of show that will see a bump for its final season, especially on a new night, but we'll see.

CW
8:00 The Flash (6th season)

9:00 Arrow (8th season)
The CW started their DC Universe era with Arrow in 2012 and followed it up two years later with the biggest hit of the Universe with The Flash. The two shows have been a part of some of the CW's biggest ratings and also the oversaturation of superhero shows. But they have never aired on the same night until now. It is Arrow's final season and it will only consist of 10 episodes (including a big DC crossover) but it will get to go out with the best slot it has had in quite awhile. The Flash continues to decline too but is still the CW's top show and I don't see that changing unless Batwoman really breaks out.

New Tuesday Show Survival Chances
Mixed-ish (ABC) - Fair. I think ABC is looking for some new family comedies and there's a chance that this can end up being a stronger performer than the show it spun off from, Black-ish. I don't think it'll be a hit. I just think it stands a chance to get renewed.

Emergence (ABC) - Very Poor. I don't feel good about this one's chances at all in a terrible timeslot for ABC and with next to no buzz. These types of shows have failed for ABC for years, this doesn't seem any different.

Check back tomorrow for Wednesday!

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...
