FOX announced this week that it has renewed freshman dramas Lucifer and Rosewood for second seasons.
Lucifer was not much of a surprise as it premiered to strong numbers behind The X-Files and held on well for that show's run. It seemed like it might be in trouble when Gotham returned, but it has proven to be a very capable partner to Gotham as they have been close to even in the demo the last couple weeks.
Rosewood has better raw numbers than Lucifer, but it's pickup is more of a surprise to me. Unlike Lucifer, it very clearly does not seem to have much of its own audience. It had a good fall because it would lead into Empire and the half hour numbers reflected that. When it had to air in March without Empire, it plummeted in the ratings. It seems like this show is doomed to fail unless it's paired with Empire, and why would FOX waste Empire on a show like this again next season?
Still not renewed but likely to be for FOX are New Girl, Family Guy, The X-Files and probably Grandfathered. The Grinder and Sleepy Hollow are on the bubble while the other scripted shows are most likely dead.
