It took until November 13, but we finally have our first official cancellation of the season with ABC's Wicked City. Plenty of shows have had their orders trimmed, a de facto cancellation, but have yet to get the official notice as networks have been patient and let shows air out their episodes. Wicked City bucked that trend by hitting a 0.4 demo, tied for the lowest in-season demo number ever for a new episode on the big four networks. The show was yanked after just three episodes and will be replaced by Shark Tank reruns for the time being. Mind you, this was the slot originally planned for Quantico and then Beyond the Tank, but it ended up going to Wicked City.
Tuesdays at 10pm continues to be a riddle ABC can't solve. It hasn't had a consistent performer here since NYPD Blue. In 2013-14, there were three shows cancelled in this slot over the course of the season. Last year, Forever lasted the whole year but didn't make it to year two though its ratings look pretty favorable compared to Wicked. I wouldn't be shocked to see Beyond the Tank here at midseason, but I think the right move is to bring Castle here and let something new (or newer) air after The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars on Mondays.
Since this blog started, the first official cancellations have been: Manhattan Love Story (2014), Lucky 7 (2013), Made in Jersey (2012), The Playboy Club (2011), and Lone Star (2010). This is the third year in a row that ABC has had the first cancellation.
