On Thursday night, NBC aired The Voice results at 8pm which was a major improvement over everything in this time period for NBC all season even though it didn't come close to its Monday and Tuesday numbers. The special episode of The Voice helped Sean Saves the World rise nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for its best numbers since the series premiere. This rise was most likely a mirage but NBC showed faith in the show by ordering five additional episodes of Sean on Friday. At 9:30pm, The Michael J. Fox Show didn't benefit at all. It was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo for a series low. NBC has a 22 episode order for this show and it's at cancellation levels. My suggestion is to bag it after 13 episodes and make a new pilot with better writing that's a better vehicle for FOX and relaunch it next fall. At 10pm, Parenthood was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo.

On CBS, The Big Bang Theory was down a tenth in viewers and three tenths in the demo from its last new episode two weeks ago. It is a season low but it also had to face The Voice this week. At 8:30pm, The Millers was up seven tenths in viewers and half a demo point from last week when it had to follow a repeat. It was down a tenth in the demo from the last time it followed a new Big Bang. As usual, raw numbers are decent but retention is terrible. At 9pm, The Crazy Ones was down a tenth in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Last week it's drop wasn't horrible when The Millers took a big drop. This week The Millers had a big rise but Crazy didn't rise as much. It looks like it may have a more independent audience. At 9:30pm, Two and a Half Men was down two tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for a series low. It will certainly fall below a 2.0 demo for the first time ever this season. At 10pm, Elementary was down six tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

Over on ABC, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland was down eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for another series low. This show is done but ABC will probably let it ride out its 13 episodes. Three of the four new ABC dramas have now fallen below a 1.0 demo. Yikes. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy was down two tenths in viewers but up a tenth in the demo. At 10pm, Scandal was down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo for a season low. This show is of course still a huge draw but it looks like the early episodes were maybe a bit of a mirage with its demo being well over a 3. FOX has a major problem with The X Factor as it was down a huge 2.8 million viewers and eight tenths in the demo from its last Thursday airing for weeks ago. This show was falling apart anyway and the baseball hiatus has completely killed it. The Voice only accounts for a little bit of this horrible number, I think. Glee returned down a mammoth 3.4 million viewers and 1.4 demo points from its Cory Monteith tribute episode but it was down just a tenth in the demo from the episode before that.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
