THE WEEK AHEAD: October 8-14, 2018

Here's a look at Week #3 of the 2018-19 season! ABC It has been a rough start to the season for ABC with the most recent disappointment being the colossal flop of the TGIF reboot. This week, they will air the American Music Awards on Tuesday night. It's a star studded lineup of performers but odd for it to be on a Tuesday. This is one of the reasons if not the reason they held their Tuesday lineup for several weeks so we'll see how well it goes. On Sunday night is the series premiere of The Alec Baldwin Show to cap their all unscripted night. MONDAY 8:00 Dancing with the Stars 10:00 The Good Doctor TUESDAY 8:00 2018 American Music Awards (Special) WEDNESDAY 8:00 The Goldbergs 8:30 American Housewife 9:00 Modern Family 9:30 Single Parents 10:00 A Million Little Things THURSDAY 8:00 Grey's Anatomy 9:00 Station 19 10:00 How to Get Away with Murder FRIDAY 8:00 Fresh Off the Boat 8:30 Speechless 9:00 Child Support 10:00 20/20 SATURDAY 8:00 Coll...

PILOT REVIEW: Happy Together

Image
HAPPY TOGETHER Starring: Damon Wayans Jr., Amber Stevens West, Stephnie Weir, Victor Williams, with Chris Parnell, and Felix Mallard Created by  Tim McAuliffe and Austen Earl Written by Tim McAuliffe & Austen Earl, Directed by Phill Lewis IN SHORT: Does Damon Wayans Jr. Really Deserve Better Than This? THE PREMISE: Based on a real life experience, Happy Together is centered on a mundane couple, Jake the accountant and his wife, Claire (Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West). Their world is rocked one Saturday night when pop star and client of Jake's, Cooper James (Felix Mallard), is forced to stay with them to avoid a paparazzi scandal. Rounding out the main cast are Claire's parents (Stephnie Weir & Victor Williams) and Cooper James' manager, Wayne (Chris Parnell). THE REVIEW: I'm gonna blow past all the unbelievable elements of this pilot. I know it's based on a true story but there's some major plausibility questions (le...

PILOT REVIEW: The Neighborhood

Image
THE NEIGHBORHOOD Starring: Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Sheaun McKinney, Marcel Spears, Hank Greenspan, with Tichina Arnold, and Beth Behrs Created by Jim Reynolds Written by  Jim Reynolds,  Directed by  James Burrows IN SHORT: Who Wants to Watch a CBS Comedy That Loudly Discusses Race Relations? THE PREMISE: Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) is a loud, Archie Bunker in reverse. He proudly celebrates his black heritage in a largely black Los Angeles neighborhood with his wife Tina (Tichina Arnold). A nice guy from the midwest, Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) moves into the neighborhood with his wife, Gemma (Beth Behrs), and son, Grover (Hank Greenspan). Rounding out the main cast is Calvin's live-in son, Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and other son, Marty (Marcel Spears). THE REVIEW: I'm not sure if this show is trying to be a modern day All in the Family  but it's coming across like a lame ABC sitcom from the mid-2000s. This is o...

THE WEEK AHEAD: October 1-7, 2018

Check below this post for my review of God Friended Me ! Here's a look at Week #2 of the 2018-19 season! ABC ABC is coming off a pretty unimpressive premiere week highlighted by big declines for The Good Doctor (although it gained a lot in Live +3) and a disappointing debut for A Million Little Things . They are still holding off their Tuesday lineup due to the American Music Awards next week so they will double pump Dancing with the Stars again and try to get some more eyeballs to Million . Thursday has the Station 19 season premiere while Friday has the return of TGIF, but it will have to compete with FOX's potent comedy hour. Sunday brings a two hour premiere of Dancing with the Stars: Junior and the season premiere of Shark Tank . I'd expect another pretty bad week for ABC although if any show grows from last week, it could be The Good Doctor . MONDAY 8:00 Dancing with the Stars 10:00 The Good Doctor TUESDAY 8:00 Dancing with the Stars 10:00 A Million Littl...

PILOT REVIEW: God Friended Me

Image
GOD FRIENDED ME Starring: Brandon Michael Hall, Violett Beane, Suraj Sharma, Javica Leslie, and Joe Morton Created by Steven Lilien and Bryan Winbrandt Written by Steven Lilien & Bryan Winbrandt,  Directed by Marcos Siega IN SHORT: Not as bad or lame as the title sounds THE PREMISE: Miles Finer (Brandon Michael Hall) is an atheist and podcaster who is on a mission to prove that God doesn't exist until one day he receives a "friend request" from God. Once he accepts, he starts getting suggestions to friend people he doesn't know but finds out they are oddly connected and he needs to get to know them for a reason. This includes Cara Bloom (Violett Beane), a writer at a magazine. Meanwhile, Miles is also estranged from his Reverend father, Arthur (Joe Morton). Rounding out the main cast is Miles' friend and computer guy, Rakesh (Suraj Sharma) and his sister, Ali (Javica Leslie). THE REVIEW: This is an interesting show and I'm not qu...

PILOT REVIEW: The Cool Kids

Image
THE COOL KIDS Starring: David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Leslie Jordan, and Vicki Lawrence Created by Charlie Day and Paul Fruchbom Written by Charlie Day & Paul Fruchbom, Directed by Don Scardino IN SHORT: The Golden Guys and Girl THE PREMISE: Hank, Charlie, and Sid (David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, & Leslie Jordan) are all buddies in a retirement home. When their buddy Jerry dies, they have a seat open at their table. Margaret (Vicki Lawrence) comes in and sits with them at what she proclaims the "cool kids" table and upends their way of life. THE REVIEW: There's so much of The Cool Kids that feels tired and not because it's set in a retirement community. This is just a throwback show through and through. It's not as cringe-inducing as some multi-camera sitcoms can be and have been in recent years, but it continues to bother me that we just don't have very smartly-written sitcoms in that format and haven't had them for qu...
