Today's award is Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series!
This year's nominees are...
STEVE CARELL as Alan Strauss on The Patient (FX/Hulu)
SAM CLAFLIN as Billy Dunne on Daisy Jones & The Six (Prime Video)
JESSE EISENBERG as Toby Fleishman in Fleishman is in Trouble (FX/Hulu)
EVAN PETERS as Jeffrey Dahmer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (Netflix)
MICHAEL SHANNON as George Jones in George & Tammy (Showtime)
STEVEN YEUN as Danny Cho in Beef (Netflix)
And the Winner Is...
STEVE CARELL
The Patient (FX/Hulu)
I think Steve Carell is a brilliant actor. Michael Scott is one of the best characters in TV history and his performance in the first season of The Morning Show was very effective, despite what others say (which is why I gave him an award for it in 2020). But Carell doesn't always pick projects well, which is how he ended up in a bunch of dud movies. The Patient allowed for a real showcase into his acting ability. With all the bells and whistles gone, The Patient was most effective in scenes where Carell was simply talking with co-star Domhnall Gleeson. He had to play terrified while also pretending to be in complete control. Let's hope Carell keeps doing projects like this instead of something like Evan Almighty!
Thoughts on the Rest of the Nominees:
There's an interesting mix of actors in this category. Evan Peters and Michael Shannon both played famous real life figures and put their own spin on them. Peters' Jeffrey Dahmer was pretty terrifying while Shannon's George Jones was better than he got credit for. Although Daisy Jones & The Six may have been more about the title character, the best scenes were ones with Sam Claflin, the most interesting performance on the series. Jesse Eisenberg and Steven Yeun were both very frustrating characters at times, but that was the point. They did a great job giving dimension to characters who made some bad choices.
Tomorrow: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series!
